I advocate for this method, green onion species can be regrown in this way even if you chop the tops off, just throw them in the ground and water them if it’s super dry and they’ll grow like weeds man, they get massive if you leave them unattended, can confirm (almost too big, they get too fibery at a certain point when they get huge)

I almost always save the bottom 1-2" of my green onions to plant out in the garden. I also inherited some kind of multiplier onion, with the house we bought, that develops little top knots of tiny onion bulbs on top of the flower stalks. That stalk eventually falls over and reseeds the onion. The younger tops are good as green onions. The older onions, I dig and use just like, I normally would. They live year round in our zone 6a garden. 😀

Did that decades ago! Had fresh green onions for years, all from grocery store green onions! The beautiful globes filled with tiny purple flowers were so attractive, I used them to edge my long rectangular herb garden (flower bed) beside my front walk, that a stranger stopped, rang my doorbell and asked what exotic flower it was. I just laughed at the fellow and explained they are onions. Green Onions don't mind snow at all. They put them on ice in the stores.😘 Greetings from Texas☆♡

I have a very hardy onion called an Egyptian walking onion here where it snows in the US (michigan) and it makes lovely topset bulbs that I pick and plant in bunches of at least 10 in cups and store out under the snow or under a frost cloth in my hoop house (unheated) when I want more green onions I grab a cup and bring it in and thaw it out and they sprout right on up. Usually less than 10 days and ive got a nice clump of green onions for dinner/salad or even in a breakfast omelet. This also works with chives where its cold. They both seem to be quite cold/freeze resistant. Not as big and lovely as your whoppers but welcome fresh veg in winter. We are just heading into spring here soon and ive got babies all started and growing under the led lights tomatoes are going in seeding pots in about 2 weeks
