It's taken me several years, but after countless experiments I am now getting incredible harvest after incredible harvest of carrots! This is a result of many factors: timing, soil, watering, and more! So, in today's seed to harvest growing guide I'm sharing with you all of my learnings on what carrots need to absolutely thrive!

One thing I have learned - when I thin the carrots, I save the ones I pulled and replant them. They transplant surprisingly well. And they grow nicely to maturity.

Good tips, thank you. Some people I notice put a plank or cardboard over the sown seeds to keep them moist. I tried this and while it did help, it was a haven for pill bugs to breed.

Yeah I'm actually trying this as an experiment right now but haven't been crazy about it

I mulch between my rows when I plant with grass clippings and put shingles over the rows. The mulch keeps the boards about a half inch above the carrot rows so they stay moist but not tamped down. For some reason, the pill bugs (I have lots) don't seem to bother the carrots much. Maybe they like the grass mulch better. As soon as I see the first carrots coming up, I take off the boards. It has worked for me.

Some nice info here but a couple of things that may be useful to some. Only use a mix of compost and native soil if you have sandy native soil, not clay. Otherwise, use maybe a mix of sharp sand and peat moss/coco coir with the compost. The part about thinning out, you will get bigger carrots if you thin out to the strongest one for sure. I tend to let them grow together and pick the biggest of the bunch so the others can grow on. I've never had them twist around each other. Nice video, cheers!

Good call out on the native soil!

Notice that his native soil is very sandy! Mine is clay and rocks. I added sand to my carrots bed.

Zone 4a, and an early warm spring. Planted using the cornstarch method last week. I'll plant more, space permitting. I mulch everything under straw. In theory the drip irrigation system gets installed this summer. The garden must be pushing 5,000 sq ft, and it's always evolving. Incidentally, I saw one gardener grow 3' long carrots in sand-filled raised bed. He made deep holes using 3" PVC, filled them with compost, and the seeds went absolute bonkers. Sandy soil is better than clay soil. Here it's mostly a couple of yellow soils, some sand, some topsoil, and major quantities of cow and horse manure, and some chicken manure. Farm life. :)

Great advice. I planted carrots in a large grow bag on May 1 in zone 7b . Used sifted compost and potting mixed. They have now germinated so I’m hoping to have a harvest in a few months.

I planted seeds in a tub last fall and babied them. Transplanted them to my garden a couple of months ago and they are growing like crazy. At least I'll know why the roots look silly if they do turn out that way when I pull them up.

Very helpful video. I have something close to the right soil mix in a raised bed, but carrots are one of the few things I have trouble germinating. I am trying the board trick this year as I live near a park and the number of squirrels tearing up the garden is crazy. I start almost everything indoors in trays.

Can I keep the carrots in the soil after they reached full maturity? Or do I need to harvest? Do you use the same bed year after year? Thanks for the video!
@MindandSoil

You can however they will start to get a bit 'woody' - tougher to bite through and not quite as flavorful
