When you harvest your beans you should be careful with the scissors to cut only the bean and not the flowering stem ... They make more beans a little farther down the stem.

I grew those beans this year, talk about long! And no strings in them. We could eat them right off the vine.

I have only one thing to say, you have turned my gardening techniques upside down. Hah. Seriously, I live in Thailand and we grow lots of long bean, apart from reducing all the support problems and access etc etc, 99% of all my growing problems/insects bugs etc are ‘you’ve guessed it’ in the soil/ground. .And it only gets better, my acre of space is now 6 acres as most climbing crops actually ran on the ground . And I have only seen the first 30 seconds . Way to go. Our biggest problem are thousands of ants on the surface. Now all I have to do is ensure my 6 foot supports have sticky etc. Forget the cure for cancer, I have already found that, just concentrate on the garden tips.

Ok, should have waited for the whole article. Even better , start containers at 3 feet/insects/water /access, climb 3 feet then horizontal chicken wire and beans hang down . It just gets better. Nb, when I grow runner beans/uk I note the best plants , ie, not bending etc and remove the root after harvest and store . Replant instead of the bean seed. Very important, people don’t realise that once you have let one pod on the plant bulge/form full beans, the mother plant puts all her energy into,raising that one pod and puts little energy into the siblings. Even removing that one is too late. Looking forward to more knowledge.
