Being honest and saying that the tomato sucked was the funniest thing! I just started my aerogarden with the “grow it yourself” pods. I’m using Ferry and Morse large red cherry tomatoes and Burpee sweet pepper “banana shaped“. Thanks for the video. A lot of good information..

I just started hydroponics and finished reading some on it. It is recommended that you reduce the nutrients a week or so before harvesting to not give your veggies/herbs a bad taste. Usually with these systems, which I have - that suggestion isn't included in the instructions.

It's what we call "flushing" for one to two weeks before harvest you want to rinse give and flush the root system with nothing but clean water to remove all left over traces of the nutes so you can enjoy the true terpines of the fruit or herb (:

Yellow canary has been a favorite for me in the aerogarden! Taste amazing! A true cherry tomato flavor, very balanced, and tomato-y. Everyone who’s tried them from my garden has loved them. They produced close to 50 of them now! It does need more pruning to avoid touching the light though, even though It claims to max out at 9 inches.

I've just started harvesting tomatoes from 2 plants in an Aerogarden Harvest model - Jochalos and Pinnochio Orange. Both are micro dwarf varieties from Bunny Hop Seeds, and are quite tasty! 80 days to first ripe fruit. Using a fan for vibration/pollination of the plants. Just planted 4 more micro dwarf varieties (also from Bunny Hop Seeds) in a Bounty Elite model I managed to get for $199 mid-December as an Amazon special deal.

Thanks for the video. I stared too with the aerogarden and have a couple of them now. I have progressed to doing Kratky buckets, wire shelving and grow lights for larger plants. Mostly tomatoes. What works really well for pollinating is an electric toothbrush. If you you just press it gently against a bunch of flowers it will pollinate the whole bunch at one time and save you time. You don't have to worry about cross pollinating tomato plants as they are hermaphrodites, so one flower can pollinate itself. For taste I have had better luck with Sungold vs Red Cherry tomatoes, but those are indeterminate and mine are 5 feet tall so you would need some room! I will be switching for part of my garden to Tiny Tims and see how that goes. The indeterminate variety get unruly and are a lot of work to keep up with all the suckers. Happy Growing!

The AeroGarden, my personal feeling I like it. I have been using the Aerogarden for years to start new growth and transplant. It is a great way to learn how to get into hydroponic growing. It is great for kids to learn how to grow things, especially in the city where there is no place to plant things.

Just an idea: Try using one of the wider pool noodles (not the thin Dollar Tree ones) for the tomato plant. Just cut it to the length you need, then slice it down one side so you can open it up and slide it around the base of the tomato plant. Hopefully it will work to give it enough support.

Hi, still checking out your older videos. Long time AG grower here. I gave up on tomatoes in the AG because they just didn't taste good. BUT here in 2024 I am growing a Kitchen Mini Siam tomato with an excellent growth habit and lots of tomatoes just starting to ripen. I'll post again when I taste them. I also have a Siam in a pot under my seed starting shop lights that are a week or so behind but last year the Siam tomato quality was excellent for an indoor grown tomato - meaning it tasted like a tomato, not "tart" with good consistency. Not sure if you still have your little AG but next fall I'm going to try the Kitchen Mini cucumber Quick Snack.

Hi Jenna, completed the grow with the Siam in the AG and - meh, not good. Not spit out bad, but not the taste we want, The Siam planted in potting mix under shop lights was 100 times better in taste. And FYI, I dabbled in mixing my own nutes for hydroponics a few years back and it still didn't grow a good tasting tomato indoors. So next fall I'll concentrate on cucumbers and peppers indoors under lights.

Most plants work well in the Aerogarden as long as you train/prune/pollinate them properly. I have the bounty basic that has a 24in light and have grown many varieties of herbs, peppers, and tomatoes(my own seeds, not the ones that come in the kits). I've also used all types of nutrients, from their proprietary nutrients and 3-stage nutrients(General Hydroponics brand), to Bokashi tea, and I've found that General Hydroponics not only gives you the best tasting fruit, but you're able to adjust the nutrients(as per the directions) to fit the needs of the plant, allowing you to grow/bloom more quickly. All you have to do is measure the correct ratios with water, dump into the reservoir, then keep up with the ratios that are on the bottle.

I have a couple older aerogardens and accessories that are useful. They sell clips to support the plants and be sure to use a taller model to grow the taller plants. There’s also a siphon bulb to easier be able to change the water out and plugs you can put in the empty pods. I’ve found the seedling trays can be useful as long as you don’t let the plants get too big. Otherwise their roots get tangled. My favorite things to grow all winter are lettuces. I use 2 aerogardens so I always have fresh greens in the winter but be sure it’s in a cooler room or the plants get limp. Hope this is helpful. Love your channel!

I had an AeroGarden several years ago, but I mainly used it for seed starting. The General Hydroponics Flora Series nutrients worked well for me - you get a lot more for your money. I now use the GH nutes when I start my seeds in the BioDome. Have you ever tried Orange Hat tomatoes? They get about 8 inches tall and are decent tasting.

Nice maters! Sad the pepper was not able to grow out like it wanted to. I'm not a fan of the AeroGarden. They are really made to grow small things like lettuce and herbs. Plus they are very pricey! Simple tote with a hanging light works much better as you have full control over the height. Thanks for showing us the results. Stay safe and have a wonderful weekend!

Yep- after playing around with it, I'm in agreeance with you CB. I'd have been better off just building my own setup from the get-go. Now I have 2 of them (I was given another one by a friend who didn't use theirs) so I'm just going to use them to grow herbs & lettuce like you say. It might be a great option for folks who have never grown anything and have very little space for growing setups- but it feels like they should be about 1/2 the price! Take care & enjoy your Sunday!

Oh- that's a good point that I didn't even think about. We keep our house at about 68F, which is a little chilly for tomatoes! @@GrowfullywithJenna thanks! I pulled the trigger on general hydroponics floranova bloom 4-8-7 and will probably ease into it once buds form by mixing with the stock aerogarden liquid or foxfarm grow big (pretty similar substitute i also purchased to try) to keep things balanced and play it safe. I'll try to update once I get there, the wait begins!

Update here, even with using floranova bloom, the tomato taste was just ok or average. They can't compare to the super sweet sunset brand flavor bomb tomatoes. The plants got very productive and large as a result though, and were making more suckers and flowers than for their own good.

Yes, I think for someone just starting out this might be a fun option. I fear it will be disappointing for folks who have gardening experience, especially those who grow their own tomatoes! That's definitely an option, Juliette! I left it in the Aerogarden because I wanted to see how the whole process (from seed to fruiting) would go. I was hoping that Aerogarden would have selected varieties that stay naturally dwarf so that you could complete the whole process successfully... alas that was not the case! If you were to transplant the pepper, it would definitely need to be done earlier in the process- there are so many roots entangled throughout the innards of the Aerogarden tank at this point, I fear it would be detrimental to try to remove it now. Take care & enjoy the remainder of your weekend!

What I'd really like to see is a video on how and when to prune tomato plants in the Aerogarden. I'm on my third planting (in a Farm 12XL and a Bounty Elite) and know I'm not getting the full benefits.

Yes, it's a monster but it quickly became obvious that the Bounty doesn't really (despite what Aerogarden would have people believe) have the capacity for a satisfactory crop of tomatoes. From what I've seen so far, if you just want to grow lettuce, greens or herbs, the Aerogarden works just fine. But for tomatoes and peppers I'm having much better results growing them in pots under a good quality grow-light indoors. If you want to grow them hydroponically, it sounds like building your own hydro setup for tomatoes is a better way to go-- though I've not had a chance to try that yet. Take care, Omar!

Just wanted to add that the larger Aerogarden units have a 24in max light height. On Amazon they sell a Tomato and pepper kit with the black covers made for the garden. Also, the Tomatoes here look very orange to me and not the deep red of a fully ripe tomato, which may be why they didn't taste very good.
@GrowfullywithJenna
@GrowfullywithJenna 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, checked it out on Amazon... but I don't think I'll be dropping $600+ on an Aerogarden any time soon 😆. I thought the same thing about the tomato color. So I waited... and waited...and waited... for weeks after the initial color change. They never got any darker, and the flavor never got any better. Also, depending on the variety, some tomatoes do ripen to be a true rich red, while others ripen to more of an orange red. They don't disclose which specific 'red heirloom cherry' this is, so I can't say for sure.

Primarily because they would get shaded out by the tomato & pepper plants and tend to stretch and get very leggy. I even had this problem growing multiple herbs- the larger more vigorous types (basil, cilantro) completely out competed and shaded out my rosemary and chives- I ended up having to move them to different pots.

@GrowfullywithJenna

I suspect they will still grow- my main concern would be that as the tomatoes get bigger they will crowd out/shade out the herbs and your herbs may become stretched and leggy. In particular the parsley as it is a slower grower than the basil.

The first "round" of tomatoes are often not as flavorful as the 2nd... etc. Especially with earth boxes and hydroponics. That plant looks TOO stressed. It could be the breed isnt right for the situation or TOO much light., Try adding Cal Mag and adjusting the amount of light to a smaller amount. That's where the AG Bounty is great... YOU control how long the light is on and when.
