Growing walnut trees from seed is easy. Just collect some walnuts from under a tree in October (for England), moisten and then pop in the fridge for a few months and you will have germinating seeds, Most seeds are dormant but a few will start to germinate of their own accord if you do not keep the seeds cool.
This if for Juglans regia (English walnut)
Walnuts were collected in Cumbria, northern England in October 2023

Good job; I enjoyed watching your process. Wish I had an enormous, beautiful tree like that in my neighborhood!! Wow. Hope you become the Johnny Appleseed of walnuts in England. If only we could eliminate all those grey squirrels! :0)

We have around 40 Hazel trees on our bit of land that produce a load of nuts, I'd love to have walnuts too

planting is the easy part, its the waiting 30 years for a nice size thats the hard part

As the old saying goes, the best time to plant a tree is 50 years ago! I do it for my children who come and plant trees with me and, who by the time they are my (advanced) age, will see quite nice trees and say "we put that there"..

thats a great legacy and will be a rewarding achievement no doubt. keep planting on! by the way im sure you are aware but didnt see it mentioned in the video that some of what is in that dark water after you soak the nuts is actually a toxin to other plants. so dont reuse that water elsewhere in the garden or on indoor plants as walnut fruit leech toxins into the soil which give them a competitive advantage by preventing other plants from growing near them. @@howardbell281

I wonder if growing indoors throughout winter a few years while the tree is young could help speed this up? I just recently overwintered a pepper plant successfully and may try this with the walnuts. I have the setup, might as well try it right? haha

Hi Howard, thank you for sharing this video - very informative! Are these walnuts edible? What do you do with your germinated seeds and young saplings? Plant around in woods/fields guerrilla style or sell them on? Thanks

Yes, they are edible but I think you have to let them dry out a bit first. I give them away, sell a few and, as my Dad has a farm, I am going to plant a few around the place. May do a bit of guerilla planting too.

Great video. How did the beech seeds do from last year?

They did great - although seeds collected after I made the video were better than those featured. I have a garden full of beech saplings now and some of the seeds I saved are still viable after a year (and starting to germinate at just the wrong time of year despite being in a jar in the fridge).

How long do the nuts store for, I’ve found some couple years ago from my tree, I had no idea how big they grow pah pah I might have to move it. Wow we need to replace our Ash down south which is dying at rapid rate and planting the walnut would be fabulous. Thanks 🙏 maybe I could germinate my old nuts?

I am not sure how long they will stay viable. It is generally thought best to germinate not long after harvesting. It might be worth giving it a go with a few, soaked for at least a day then kept in the fridge - mine are beginning to germinate now. The ash on my family farm are all dying and I am growing lots of beech and hornbeam to replace them - both easy to grow,
