This is a step by step tutorial on how to grow a black walnut tree from seed going through all steps from seed collection all the way to the final product of a sapling. Black walnut trees are beautiful, growing tall and wide living hundreds of years. They are renowned for the gorgeous hard wood harvested from mature trees that is popular in furniture. Large trees can be worth thousands for timber. Black walnuts can be found all over the eastern United States and reaching into Canada. The trees product a very large quantity of walnuts once they reach maturity and the nuts are delicious both fresh and dried packed with great nutrients. Wildlife loves this tree!
Black walnuts produce a chemical called juglone, which occurs naturally in all parts of the tree, especially in the buds, nut hulls, and roots. The leaves and stems contain smaller quantities of juglone, which is leached into the soil after they fall. The highest concentration of juglone occurs in the soil directly under the tree’s canopy, but highly sensitive plants may exhibit toxicity symptoms beyond the canopy drip line. Because decaying roots can release juglone, toxicity may occur for several years after a tree has been removed but I have never seen any issues from this in my experience and see this tree all over forest.

I have 3 trees I propagated this past year in pots. They are about 18" tall at this point. What's my next step? When should I plant them and how should I protect them from squirrels, groundhogs and deer?

I am curious at what point you planted/will plant these in the ground. I have a black walnut tree I planted years ago, last year it produced three seed I was able to find, but this year there are dozens so I am going to try and get some saplings going.

Black walnut trees grow 13 -24 inches per year, thats pretty fast. Why are you saying they grow very very slowly? Is this a different kind ? Im just curious ??

I actually found one in my pot a couple weeks ago because I pulled out my hydrangea tree because it had no leaves on it. Now I know why. A squirrel must have planted that nut.

Hi , question ? are all the trees that you have in your videos cold climate trees which need freezing temperatures ? Very nice informative videos on tree germination from seed. Thx

They are cold climate in the sense that they need stratification to germinate

I could be wrong but I thought Black Walnut trees had an even number of leaflets, with two at the end. Not with the odd leaf at the end. Am I wrong? If so I don’t know what I have now, lol. Also, when these are very small, half the size of yours at the end of the video, can the trunk be slightly bulbous at the base?

Ciao amico! Grazie mille, ottimo tutorial 🎉

Thanks for the video! I currently have about 400 black walnuts in my fridge, itching to put them out. Question: first part of the video, you put the nuts in the baggy without dirt; second part you take them out with dirt all around them. When did you add the dirt?
@greenthinking7247

I added dirt right before i put them in the fridge for stratification

I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure black walnuts are one of the more fast growing walnut species. According to what I read they can grow 3 to 4 feet a year in good conditions.

Honestly it really depends on soil composition, sunlight, water and many other factors. I look at black walnuts as slow growers from experience with other trees and how long it takes for a tall wide canopy but in perspective with others they are not the slowest. First couple years should really always have a lot of growth from root development and the tree getting established!

@@greenthinking7247 I live in southern wisconsin, and black walnuts grow incredibly fast here. They’re also a very common tree here. I will say that they do not like soil acidity at all. People like you that live in the south tend to have acidic soil, so I’d recommend that you lime them. As a matter of fact, some of the best examples of black walnut that I’ve ever seen were growing directly over a limestone outcrop.

How long can I keep the walnuts in shell before stratification? I have already removed outer hull and have nuts in onion bag. I have washed them once to get the gunk off but have not started the stratification. It's Nov 1 2023.

I was wondering the same thing... I'm stratifying a ton that I gathered since the beginning of October, gonna see if any of them come up next year. As long as it isn't rotten, I would imagine there is a chance to germinate

The last shot of your walnuts had no dirt and you said you were gonna “pop them in the refrigerator” then months later you take them out and they have dirt in them…..🤷‍♂️ Your attention to detail needs some adjustment.

If you want trees that produce valuable hardwood, collect nuts only from trees that have good form... ramrod straight, no forks, etc. That way you are much more likely to get trees that are similar to their "mother".
