Goji Berries, also known as Wolfberries, are one of the worlds most amazing superfood, but they cost about $6.50 for 100grams. So I decided to grow Goji Berries for myself.
I used seeds which I collected from store bought organic dried goji berries.
Goji Berries are also known as Wolf Berries and their latin name is Lycium Barbarum

Hey Vince I usually just pour 25-50 berries in a small bowl of warm tap water. Wait about 30 minutes and the berries can be smeared apart and the good seeds sink to the bottom of the bowl. Those are the good seeds as the floaters and goji berry shells can be used elsewhere. I harvested a few hundred good seeds in less that 5 minutes of work! Remember the seeds that sink to the bottom are the good ones :) I hope that this helps others as this is SUPER fast and efficient!

To make things easier in the future, if you soak the berries they'll plump up and if you pinch them the seeds will all burst out cleanly. Then you can use a teaspoon to spoon out the seeds floating in the water. I learned this from an elderly Tibetan woman. It was so simple and effective I was in awe.

That's actually how I eat the red gojis ... when I by then they are kind of dry like raisins and I cover them with just enough water and wait an hour or two and I get more flavor but it's also much easier to get the seeds

I have a plant which is only one year old and it's giving me hundreds if not thousands of berries. What I do is I bury fish guts around the soil of the plant. ( I love fishing.) and water it with washing from the cleaning of fish and chickens. This really help with the plant's growth and fruiting.

Also I wanted to comment on your method of lifting the seedlings. If you extract in that manner any zones of maturation may be severed causing slow growth. Simply squeezing on the sides of the plastic pot and dumping it into your hand and separating in clumps gently ensures that your plants chances of injury is higher.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I had decided to revert with the results. I had sown dry seeds in 6 pots, 3 of them in that window of the room which got hard sunlight and 3 in another shaded window of the room (without a humidifier). The ones in shade sprung earliest as compared to those in the area getting hard sunlight. Is it a problem if the sprouts of 6-7 seeds are getting crowded during growth? Thanks again :)

Next time you go out to eat Chinese, ask for chop sticks. They are great for pricking out seedlings and transplanting them into cells. One end I sharpen to a better point and the other end I make kind of a chisel shape. Best of all... you might be able to just ask for some without even buying anything. Cept a bit of barbeque pork is always a nice treat.

Did you mention that Goji need SWEET soil! They won't grow well in acidic soil . The soil must be well drained also. I have read that true Tibetan Goji are a different cultivar than common Wolf berry. Mine are growing slowly. I am going to move them this season to a carefully prepared plot. If your Goji isn't doing well, it could be a ph problem.

When they are young its safe to keep them moist - when they are about 10 centimeters tall you can wait until the soil is dry before watering again. If they start to look limp after not watering them for a few days, give them some water.

One small problem and item to be aware of. I'm in my third year of gogi berries and was just expecting a nice crop. Just as they where pumping but not totally ripe and i had decided 2 or 3 days, my whole crop got hit with the yellow jacket wasps an wiped out the whole thing, leaving me nothing but black wilted fruit. Just something to watch for.
@calysagora3615
@calysagora3615 2 жыл бұрын
The answer to your problem is Boric acid. Boric acid or boric acid salts like Borax, dissolved in fruit juice, in a pet bottle, attracts wasps, but not bees, and the bottle neck prevents butterflies and alike from entering. Boric acid is a natural compound that kills wasps, ants, termites and cockroaches, while being harmless to most other animals. Even small doses kills, but slowly, so what happens is that wasps collect the juice (they don't like the taste of the acid concentrate) and brings it home to feed the colony, and thereby kills the entire colony, and the source of your problem. This is used in bee keeping, as bees are not interested in nectar (juice) only pollen. Wasps eat anything, including nectar, goji berries and bees. 🤗

@@calysagora3615 fascinating! I am going to try this. I understand that this is completely off topic but do you have any success in killing squash bugs?
@calysagora3615
@calysagora3615 Жыл бұрын
@@davidvick1078 I don't think I've had that particular problem. For tiny stuff just spraying with soap water often helps, basically water without surface tension gets into their epidermal breathing and drowns them. Otherwise an effective pesticide is letting nicotine from a cigarette soak in water over night, then spray the plants and water with it. Nicotine is a strong nerve toxin that immobilize them to death. Lastly for bugs that don't fly, sprinkling diatomic earth around plants help, and for most ants, regular cinnamon is a very effective repellent. Good luck!

I have used good quality potting compost and they are in 3 inch pots which are in the polytunnel and well watered. What's going wrong? I bought what I thought was a Goji Berry plant at a farmers market in early spring this year. It grew well and produced a 20-30 berries. However the berries seemed to contain one large seed, so large that there wasn't a lot of berry to taste - about the size of a flattened orange pip. Now I am wondering if it really is a Goji berry plant - it certainly looks like one? Or is it just the first year's crop? Any thoughts?
