Today I'll be sharing the whole process of growing popcorn from start to finish including starting popcorn seeds, how to care for the plants, harvesting and even popping your own pop corn. There are many amazing varieties of popcorn out there to try and today I'll be growing an heirloom variety called Strawberry Popcorn. This variety is great for small gardens as it only grows to around 5 ft. tall, and it produces small red ears of popcorn which look pretty amazing. The kernels are small on this variety but they still pop well and the corn can also be ground and used to make flour, cornmeal and polenta. Next time I'm planning to try glass gem corn which have full sized, and multicolored kernels - they look pretty epic! I hope you enjoy this popcorn growing guide, and have a go planting your own pop corn in the garden! :)

The multi-colored variety is rather bland, all for show. If you regularly make popcorn, I can recommend a hot air popcorn maker, perfect results. Just keep the kids away from it. I came down one morning to every bowl and saucepan filled with popcorn with them in a panic trying to find more and more space for popcorn - they had filled the machine to the brim. It was hilarious that "just switch it off" had never occurred to them and that they thought they would be in big trouble!

Interesting corn variety, the actual corn shape and colour reminds me of those red coloured Banksia plants we have here in Australia. I swear corn seems to just do so well for you, I've never really had success growing corn before, it usually grows with little to no vigour for me and flowers when the plant is still tiny, producing pretty much nothing. I also noticed at the end that you have started a small collection of cacti too.

Burying an unglazed terracotta vase or pot in your garden can help your plants out during dry spells. Fill it with water and the plants will take what they need. Make sure to put a top over it though otherwise you'll end up with mosquitoes

The water actually doesn't turn to steam initially with heating. Due to the hard shell the heat causes the pressure to build up while keeping the water in a liquid state until the rupture happens. This pressure release causes the superheated water to immediately turn to a gas which is what makes the pop, and rapid expansion makes the spongey soft texture we all love.

@@TheKiwiGrower 🥶 Where I live, our winters are very long, verrrrry cold with mountains of snow! It usually starts snowing in November until April. January and February are the coldest months with temperatures from approximately minus 10° Celcius (if we're lucky) to minus 25°-30 °Celcius. The gardening season is very short so I start the seedlings inside the house and then they can be planted outside around beginning may or so. However, not everything can be planted outside at this time of the year because at night it still might be too cold. For exemple, tomatoes should be transferred outside only around mid -June to avoid possible frosty nights. The growing season is approximately until end of September- mid- October. My lemon tree, lime tree and orange tree are in big pots and brought into the house in September. Take care and best wishes! 🍄🎃🌼🍂🍁🍂🌼🎃🍄

My corn always got to the size of my thumb. If you're 3 inches high, it's a feast.

take a look at the drip tape that Hoss Tools sells from U.S. i bought it from them and with massive freight charge was still cheaper and easier than options where i am, australia. also got their proptek trays, which are really good for all veggie starting. btw if you do end up buying their drip irrigation kit, buy a pack of row starters with valves, as the kit has row starters without valves. i also got the fertilizer injector from them, so no more fertilizing with watering can.

Thanks Chris, that's good to know, cheers. I've been a little nervous to set up irrigation here as we're 100% on rain water capture, so a bit worried it would get left on or a timer would fail therefore emptying our tanks. Might have to just do it though with the gardens expanding - takes way too long to water in Summer by hand

Couple of things about popping popcorn 1. Bacon grease instead of oil and 2. you can pop the corn right on the cob if you put it in a paper bag and microwave it. Sometimes they all simultaneously pop, its intense.
