As a plant biologist, I really like your appreciation for the science behind plant growth! Science writing can be a bit dry to read, but it’s cool that you are educating your audience on the real reasons behind what you observe in your plants. :)

haha maybe I am just a big nerd but I actually really enjoy reading scientific literature 😅 But the more I know the more I realize there is still so much to learn!! And that plants and plant metabolism is incredibly fascinating and more complex than just "plant gets light, plant grows". I'm finding that I am becoming more interested in the how's and why's and not just the results. 🤔 I think if more and more people took the time to understand the why's and how's, we wouldn't be seeing so many crazy plant hacks out there that don't even make sense from a scientific perspective 😅

This type of content is so needed on youtube and in the plant community in general🥳❤️ I love this topic as I find it ridiculous how 99% of this community say your plants NEED 70-90% humidity and dont consider that theres more to happy plants than just humidity. I would love to have my plants just all around my apartment one day. They are so pretty, why would I tuck them away in a growtent if I just grow them for my enjoyment and not for profit?🤗 I could see myself having a cabinet or something for humidity for seedlings/babyplants but the rest would be great in my normal living space☺️
@HerPlantStories
@HerPlantStories Жыл бұрын
thank you! Yes, there's so much more than humidity! I don't have the most impressive collection out there - I know there are others who grow in RH and their plants are so big and healthy, so it's definitely doable! Hehe as for the cabinet, that's exactly what I ended up doing - I do like the aesthetics of a cabinet and I got one for my baby plants and seedlings!

Thank you so much and I am so glad you're enjoying my videos! Yeah, I have not seen this sort of information being talked about too much, I find most plant focused accounts and influencers tend to focus more on growing inside a greenhouse/cabinet/tent, but I know a lot of people may not have the resources or space for that, or like myself, would prefer to have the plants out in the open! I just wanted to show that it can definitely be done, even in the dry Canadian climate 😂 I hope this video helped you!

As soon as I bring a plant home, it lands in room humidity. My ambient humidity is about 40%. I guess that's cold turkey. Sometimes I sort of hold my breath to see what the plant will do. The ones I worried about the most were philodendron Holtonianum and Sodiroi. But they have both done surprisingly well. Your sodiroi is outstanding by the way.

Loving your videos. So well put together. I never had any of my plants in a greenhouse or anything, and yup they grow kinda slow, but look not too bad. lol of course a lot of my plants are snake plants, and succulents. Begonias seem to do okay too, surprisingly. I do live in an old kinda damp flat though, so normally the humidity seems to be sorta high-ish. :T

hehehe! If your place is naturally humid already, and the plants are living their best life without you having to do much, then I call that a win!!! 🥳 I have a friend who pretty much has a jungle in her living room and her humidity is naturally high, too, from the sheer amount of plants she has! Thanks Becca for a very interesting video on keeping rarer plants in room humidity. All my plants are in room humidity (today 44% RH, 27C inside) hot summers/cold winters here. Have to look into VPD, but am a slave to what’s on offer as don’t like using furnace/ A/C unless unbearable. I do have a little plastic greenhouse with 4 shelves for my prop boxes, but not tall shelves to keep plants. Besides, I don’t like keeping them in there unless hospital condition, because I have them to enjoy them and don’t want to hide them. Too bad IKEA is hours and hours away even if I could fit one of those cabinets in my vehicle. Keep up the good work! I enjoy hearing the science behind plant care!
@HerPlantStories
@HerPlantStories Жыл бұрын
I think certain plants are popular as houseplants for a reason, since they tend to be more adaptable! I am sure your plants will do just fine in your conditions and I totally agree that plants are there for us to enjoy and not to hide! The IKEA cabinets are beautiful but I find that plants outgrow them too quickly (while true, this is also what I tell myself so I don't feel like I am missing out on them haha! )

@@paolanorman4590 that's what I have done too! I was able to get my hands on a used cabinet (cheaper) that I now use for baby plants and propagations. Delivery can be very costly for some cities that aren't located close to an IKEA, unfortunately. When I was living in Vancouver Island, shipping cost an arm and leg and it was cheaper to take the ferry back and forth to pick one up yourself, if they even had it in stock! Such a weird thing to have a shortage of lol

I really enjoy your content. 💚🌿 This was a great video. How about at night do you lower the heat or keep it at 20-22 Celsius? Especially in the winter months?
@HerPlantStories
@HerPlantStories Жыл бұрын
The temperature does dip slightly during night time, about 0.5-1 degree C or so, so not by much. Plants appreciate a slight dip in temperatures during the evening anyway as long as it isn't freezing 😆 I am interested to see what the temperatures will be like in our new place come wintertime since Winnipeg is a significantly colder city compared to Victoria. I think humidity for sure will likely drop to between 30-40% so I plan to supplement with a humidifier when the time comes. As for temperature, I don't think the interior of the house will change too much since we will have heating on and temperatures will be controlled by our house thermostat.
