Steve's Seaside Kitchen Garden & Allotment

Steve's Seaside Kitchen Garden & Allotment

4 жыл бұрын

If you are new to my allotment videos you might find a bit of context useful. We live in the north west of England, in Lytham St Annes, which I believe is the equivalent of USA Zone 8.
We have three allotments in my family, mine (Steve), my wife's (Debbie) and my middle daughter's (Jennie). We also have a small kitchen garden at home. They are all managed in an integrated fashion, so don't expect to see the usual mix of veg on each plot. I do most of the planning and seed starting. We each have our own plots, but we all help each other out.
Jennie's plot has been designed as a traditional allotment, but we put a lot of focus on minimising the work we do there. It's basically a plant and forget it plot, full of garlic, leeks, onions, beetroot, brassicas, squash, beans and fruit trees. It's heavily mulched to reduce weeds and easy to water.
Debbie's plot is mostly full of perennials, it's a garden plot. Again we did a lot of work to keep the weeds down and Debbie's approach is inspired by the TV programme The Ornamental Kitchen garden.
My plot is all about experimental growing, maximum productivity and year round abundance. As with all of the other plots I did a lot of work to control the weeds, but it's a high maintenance plot. I'm always planting, harvesting, experimenting and generally having a great time.
Collectively the plots deliver an amazing abundance of fruit and veg all year round. Debbie, Jennie, Jon and I are effectively self sufficient in veg all year round and in fruit for much of the year. During winter we sometimes have enough surplus to feed our local family. During the rest of the year when the surplus from our house garden comes on stream we have surpluses in some crops for a few friends as well.
This video provides an overview:
• The big picture of our...
I do an update of the allotments, roughly twice a month, you can find the tours here:
• Full allotment tour as...
Our approach to allotment life is to: grow as much as we possibly can, to be self-sufficient in veg all year round and in fruit in season, to give away our surplus to friends and family, and to have as much fun as possible. For more on self sufficiency check out these videos:
• Super quick update on ...
Debbie and I spend about 4 hours a day, 4 days a week on the plots (on average) and we keep nudging that down as we eliminate non-productive work: like grass cutting, weeding and watering as much as practical. We are both newbie gardeners, only starting the allotments in 2016.
I'm a bit obsessive about the nutrient density of the veg that we grow and making the plots easy to work because it's through this allotment lifestyle and food that I've overcome a debilitating auto-immune disease.
I'm always aware though that it might not last so I make sure that I don't work too hard, eat as much organic fruit and veg I can and design the plots so that I can still work them when I flare up.

Nice video, a couple of suggestions for you that have done well for me in similar modules 'Blanca de la Reina' for harvest in April and a beautiful 'Rossa di Firenze' which are a mild, decorative, red torpedo variety,which I first grew over last winter and was really happy with.

Hi Steve, Some nice Onions and lettuce coming on there. I seem to do better with Ramrod spring onions than white lisbon. Never tried Sturon for springs but on my list now, cheers
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 4 жыл бұрын
Sturon are a firm favourite for me, I like the hardiness and the taste, but what I really like is that if I over-plant or under eat they don't go to waste, I just pull them as bulbs. I've never tried Ramrod, I will take a look, thanks for the tip! : All the best - Steve

Excellent videos really enjoying this winter planting. I am about to sow white lisbon onions for growing in my solar greenhouse what temperature do you set your propagater to?
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 4 жыл бұрын
Actually I don't use a propagator for onions, they germinate better in cool soil, I put mine on the floor in an unheated bedroom, about 18c : All the best - Steve

Another great vid, Steve, I've just put a pack of white lisbon into module trays today; how far apart do you recommend for spacing once I transplant them into beds? Looks like 4 or 5 inches but I'm not 100% sure, bit hard to make out.
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on how many onions you sowed per module, in my case I have 6-9 and I'd plant then about 6" apart. However I almost never actually do that as I normally inter-plant my onions into my salad beds : All the best - Steve

Hello Steve, a nice crop of onions and lettuce. I grew some late onions (Ramrod) and left them to bulb up, they are still out in the beds now, I can recommend them. Have you got any Salanova lettuce growing now??? Cheers. Nigel
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nigel, I've stopped growing Salanova, the seeds are expensive and I just don't rate them for taste by comparison with my winter picks. When I did grow them - very pretty - I preferred the red ones over winter, the greens didn't fare very well : All the best - Steve

At 7:23 at that point of growth, could you possibly separate a clump to replant so the can bulb up at a later time. This was a great video. Appreciate the info.
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 2 жыл бұрын
You don't need to separate them, if you have - for example - a clump of 7 spring onions, eat three or four of them and leave the others to bulb up, they will push apart just fine. You need a variety that's good as a spring onion and a bulbing onion, like Sturon : All the best - Steve

Hi Steve.just taken delivery of some White Lisbon Winter Hardy seeds, planning on growing some outside in a raised bed which is netted and some in my unheated greenhouse. Do I need protection over the Winter for the outside ones? I am North West UK.
@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, growth rate doubles for every 10c rise in temperature, so seedlings under cover will grow faster and more will survive. That's going to be important when sowing at this time, which is about 6 weeks later than ideal sowing time, so yes, if you can protect them that would be ideal. however they will be happy in a unheated greenhouse. However this later they will be very slow to mature : All the best - Steve

@SteveRichards
@SteveRichards 4 жыл бұрын
It sounds like they were a bulbing onion like Sturon, if you plant those in mid summer they try and fail to bulb. I don't sow bulbing onions like Sturon until mid August. if you plant a spring onion like White Lisbon in early summer you might be ok, although the best time for spring onions is late summer/early autumn and late winter/spring. The best time for sowing bulbing onions is late summer (for over-wintering varieties) and then again in February/march for main crop varieties : All the best - Steve
