How to grow spring onions (or salad onions) from seed - Spring onions are really easy to grow and her I’m explaining how you can grow them! I then successional sow them through to around July. I use a mixture of methods and take you through the stages; starting seeds indoors, planting out the seedlings, using the multi-sow method and the seedbed method and also just direct sowing. I start my early spring on ion seedling inside in January ready to plant out in April.
The three varieties of Spring Onions I’m growing this year are:

The traditional method of growing spring onions is to place 10 seeds (around eight will sprout and traditionally there are eight in a ‘bunch’) in each 2x2 cell. After about five weeks transplant the contents of each cell into the ground or raised bed, do not separate them.

I’m a face coverer too! Cannot abide magazine pages with a big face looking at me!!! I too am a straight line kind of person - I even unconsciously neatly line up all my seed trays, as a friend noticed in a photograph last year. So I had a module tray of multi-sown Spring Onions that survived being outdoors under glass, planted out into the ground a few weeks ago that are coming along nicely. Meanwhile another, earlier sown, module tray that were planted under cover of that same cold frame are bulking up to a usable size right now. Omnomnom 😋Your planting density was interesting - I will try that, having spaced mine out more like Alex (🤞for cross-over episodes with you two when it’s safe to do so!)

I thought when I read scallions that you were going to be talking about the Hardy perennial variety AKA red welsh onions. They are a bunching onion, so when you stick a single stalk in the soil it will multiply to form a clump of about 20 or so stalks shaped a bit like celery at the bottom. You dig out the clump, pull off one of the stalks and replant it, starting the process again. I got a couple of stalks off a neighbour and in a couple of years I had 10 clumps with about 20 in each. They have a superior flavour and are ingredients in jerk seasoning and the garnish on ramen noodle soup.

Hello Jess. Great video today as this is a definite to grow this year. Both my partner enjoy. It does look like something a newbie can do! Yay! My question is can I grow in window box like containers? Do like the the one you recommended. Is there a taste difference? Do like the sound of using the bbq. We do our asparagus the same, I should say weather does not matter as we bbq throughout the year here across the pond Ontario Canada. Blessings to all 🐝

I know exactly what you mean about the mish mash on the seed packet. I bought a Verbena, was sent Echinacea with a verbena tag. The garden center "oh the plant it not going to look like the picture because it's in the semi-dormant state. My response "an echinacea is not a Verbena, the same way an apple is not an orange, irrespective of whatever stage of growth it's presently in".

"poly tunnels being blown away", that's why most gardeners build glass and wood greenhouses here. Aluminum and plastic just won't hold up! I've sown mine in 40 cell flat, but wow, he planted his in a 200 cell flat. I could have done that and had single seed in each cell. I didn't like planting onions in a single tray.
