For everyone interested in Dutch Bucket Hydroponics, please pay attention. The container of choice is virtually irrelevant. What you need to focus on is the overall process of fertilizer and water distribution. In this video, I'm using a 5.5 gal waste basket to grow a First Lady tomato. Pick whatever container suits the plant you're trying to grow, and have fun.

Good points. Just saw round white 5 gallon food grade buckets at Menards yesterday for $3.50. It's like a Home Depot and Lowes only better. Personally I use 4 gallon icing containers from the grocery store bakeries. They're free.

With you as inspiration I did 5 tomatoes in a 6’- 3” pvc tube with 2” net pots and used the master blend just like you showed in one of your videos, they grew so well that I had to tie them to the ceiling of my greenhouse. When they were all said and done the plants grew to about 12’ in length and were great producers. When I cleaned the roots out of the tube it looked like a 6’ long blonde ponytail. Thanks for the great videos I’m glad your back to making them again.

Glad to see a more recent video. Most I've seen are from several years ago. Your videos are the most informative for the average gardener. You take the anxiety out of gardening. I especially appreciate the tip you gave of Hydro Gardens. I've been ordering hydroponic fertilizer from Colorado for several years now. Such a good product. Thanks again and I look forward to more videos. Hope you are doing well and God bless.

I am glad your back on YT, you got me into growing my own food for my family and its been extremely valuable more so during this time of the pandemic. I have personally changed the way i grow from your typical dutch bucket drip system to a flood and drain type setup, reusing the old dutch bucket setup i had already installed. The main reasons i made the switch was i am in south Florida and the algae was getting very out of hand with water being dripped at the top inch or so of the grow medium, resulting in killing my plants, so i tried to fix this by moving the drip into the grow medium deeper between 1-2 inches of the top, but the dang roots kept growing into the drip lines, clogging them up and causing the plants to die from lack of water. So now i use a flood and drain method, i connected the aquarium pump i use to the old drain line that the dutch buckets drained into previously , and i back pump the water into the buckets via this old drain line, then at the very end of my pipe, i have a raised standpipe acting as the drain level, which all the water above that overflow level spills over and back to the water tank. Gravity causes all the buckets to maintain the level of the standpipe while the pump is backfeeding water into the buckets, then when the pump turns off it drains back into the tank through the pump. The stand pipe at the end is just friction fitted, so i can use different height standpipes to train the roots to grow deeper as the plants mature because the bottom 1 inch of the 5 gallon buckets have standing water that doesn't drain off that they can continuously feed on 24/7. i also use a double 5 gallon bucket setup. The outer 5 gallon bucket has the pvc pipe fitting attached in the bottom with a few pieces of pvc pipe cut acting as spacers hot glued to the bottom to prevent the top (inner) bucket from contacting the pvc fitting, it sits just above the fitting ontop of the spacers. the top (inner) bucket has holes drilled into it for drainage and i just use a paint strainer with large 3-4 inch rocks filled up about 1/3rd of the bucket, then clay pellets for 1/3rd of the bucket leaving 1/3rd as wind protection for when the plant is brand new. Then i start off the flood level just below the grow medium level, then every 2-3 weeks i drop it down an inch to promote deeper rooting. last year I got my plants to grow roots all the way to the very bottom of the bucket, so it had access to the bottom 1 inch of water at all times. On my newest builds, instead of having hard pvc pipe running to the buckets. I use the 1/2inch poly drip tubing with T adapters running to the buckets, the flexible tubing allows me to raise and lower the buckets to change the flood level individually in each bucket, so i can have mature and new plants on the same system and keep the spillover standpipe the same.

I remember many years back, Bobby addressed on video, subscriber comments about his "accent". He stated that after going back and listening to himself he couldn't hear what people were talking about? I always figured it was remnants from the cajun region...if I recall right? I had never even noticed till Bobby brought it up one day and lo and behold He hasn't lost any of his verbal charm!!! Love ya Bobby, you have taught me so much the last decade, I truly appreciate the many many hours you put in and the honest down to earth teaching you blessed us with. Hey, when the snowflakes show up next time....let us handle 'em....with love & kindness.

Nice video, good to see you out on KZfaq. You motivated me to do hydroponics and I set up 4 inch drain PVC with 2 inch holes, and a hole through the bottom to fit those grommets from Grainger and I can set the height by sliding the half inch PVC up into it and letting it drain to the next 1. I feed the upper one and it zigzags back and forth until it goes into the reserve. I even set up a plastic 4 x 8 greenhouse on the side of the house. Works like a charm and gives me all the games I can handle plus a bunch to share. Thanks again, and Lord bless you

You got me growing tomatoes in Dutch buckets here a few years ago and Ive had great results to this day. A couple of nice additions I made was a car radiator fan run directly off a 100w solar panel which cools my greenhouse when the sun's high. My last edition was another 100w panel and a battery setup to power a 12v pump for the nutrients worked like a charm. Thank you kindly Sir for the good inspiration, God bless you 🙏

My son and I are working on building a hydroponic greenhouse for his 2nd Semester AgriScience SAE Project for school over the next 14 weeks. I've been watching your videos so I can share with him the different techniques to use, etc. I really appreciate your dedication and time to this and also for providing us with alternative ways that are less expensive to start our greenhouse. We are on a budget for this project so he has to keep his out of pocket expenses to a minimum. One thing we were able to do to help us with cutting some costs was we went around to our local bakeries and collect various sizes of the buckets that the bakeries store icing for cakes, cupcakes, etc. inside. Some places we went to did charge $1 for each bucket but most just gave them to us for free considering it was for my son's school project because they wanted to help out and because they are required to throw them out daily due to health department regulations. After calling over 32 stores, 14 were able to assist us on that particular day and in 1 day, we were able to collect 51 buckets in total. Now the buckets did need to be washed b/c most places didn't clean them out but with a little bit of work, we had them cleaned up and ready for use. He wants to create the dutch bucket system but we also talked about the tables like you've made as well. Many different sites have mentioned going with the Master blend nutrient but you are the only person we have found that has provided a test comparison of which products work better so we could determine which product yielded better results. Depending on how ours does, we hope to be able to provide tips, etc. to his classmates since they will also be starting a community garden in the next few months at their school for this same class. We are still trying to piece together everything we still need to get started so any other tips, ideas, etc. that you can provide to assist us in this process, please let me know. We could use all the guidance we could get since we are still very new to this.

I've been called everything from stupid to paranoid to crazy for being a prepper and I'm not even a hardcore prepper! But while everybody is panicking and running to the store and freaking out cause the stores are running out of everything, I'm sitting at home watching it all happen on TV from the comfort of my couch! I'd sure love to hear your and Susan's take on the situation and quite a few others probably would too! Hope you are both healthy and well! Hope to see a new video from you soon!

Glad to see you back! Did my first dutch bucket tomatoes this fall in my new greenhouse (Seaford, Va) with excellent results until hit by Pythium (confirmed by Va Ext Service) infection. Trying Hydroguard now but with limited success. Ext Service suggested sterilizing everything and starting over. Apparently, reservoir temp can be a big factor in pythian growth. Would you consider doing a video on the types of problems you can run into with hydroponic systems and also how to address/prevent/mitigate them?

Kroger and Walmart use to give away those 1, 2, 4, and 5 gallon food grade buckets (with lids). Just go to the bakery section and ask if they have any empty icing buckets that they're going to pitch. You may need to wash them out, yourself, but they're FREE! I got about 40 of them about 3 and a half years ago. I'm still using mine.

First off, I want to tell you that I really love your tutorials on hydroponics. It has got me so inspired that I started to build a green house. One thing I am not clear on is the amount of water that is maintained in the system. If I have a 40 (5 gallon buckets) and a reservoir that is 64 gallons. How much water do I put in the buckets and the reservoir to start the system? How often do I run the system? Are the roots completely submerged in water? Any help would be greatly appreciated. AJ
