I moved to the US when I just over 1 year old, and went to my first day of school knowing just a TINY bit of English. This is my story of what it's like to grow up as a Chinese immigrant in a predominantly white US neighborhood. I'll share the struggles I had, the memories I made and the regrets I hold...
我刚一岁多就移民到美国,只学了两句英文就去上小学了。这就是我的故事:作为中国移民成长在白人当中。我将会与大家分享我经历到的困难,可怀念的记忆,还有留下的遗憾...

Disclaimer: This is the story of my personal experience as a Chinese immigrant, and now, a Chinese American citizen. My experiences do not necessarily reflect the experiences of all Asian immigrants, although I believe most have had a similar experience. Don't be prejudice towards others. ❤️❤️❤️
免责声明:这是我个人的移民经历,从作为中国移民到作为美国华裔。我的经历不一定代表所有亚洲移民的经历,不过我觉得有很大一部分也有类似的经历。不要用成见看待别人。❤️❤️❤️

I am an overseas Chinese born in the Netherlands and have lived there for over 13 years. I currently live in Belgium for more than 6 years. My Mandarin is decent enough to hold a basic conversation with another Chinese person, but I mainly speak Wenzhounese with my parents and other family members. So my Wenzhounese is much more refined than my Mandarin. I also had a similar case where I couldn't speak Dutch until I was 6 years old.

I could relate to a lot of the things that you talked about, especially not fitting in with everyone else. There’s also the problem of forgetting your own culture after being away from it for so long. I didn’t like myself for because I thought I was too influenced by American culture to be considered Chinese. I realized that you can’t attach your worth to something like that. You just need to be you because there will only ever be one of you.

Really interesting video. I’m in the UK and my city is 97% white. I remember we had two HK kids and one Indian kid in my school of thousands of children. Now I’m married to someone originally from China and I lived there for a few years too. Thinking about having kids I often wonder how they’ll feel in school and if they’ll feel isolated as 50/50 British/Chinese, and how I can make sure they know something about their fathers culture. Your experiences were helpful to hear.

ABC here, and super glad that I found your channel. Relearning Chinese as an ABC is like a weird in-between of being native and starting from the basics, so it’s great to hear insight from someone with similar life experiences. I think ABCs tend to feel like outsiders in the US even though our culture is pretty well permeated globally. I admire you for being so dedicated to learning Chinese, because a lot of my Chinese friends reject their culture. You’re very inspirational to people like me. Keep doing what you’re doing!!

I learned about this today, being from the US but of Latin American heritage: what you've experienced is known as liminal identity. It's kind of being between two cultures, and those people tend to be generally successful and can more easily understand foreign cultures, whereas most people tend to have a hard time (it's weird to me, but for others, trying to understand another culture is almost as much of a challenge as learning another language, it can take time, simply because they don't yet have a frame of reference to compare their culture against to see why it's different). The flip side is, sometimes it can make you feel out of place, because society can make you feel like you're not fully either of them.

The problem with living in any big country with a strong cultural identity and very little need to know about the world outside has the potential of making you ignorant and arrogant unless you have the chance of being very well educated or have contacts abroad. Having a multicultural background makes you more resilient to that, so it should be considered a boon.

Hi, what a great talk and very interesting insights! I agree 100% with your thoughts on foreign languages and cultures. Languages are gateways to other cultures and learning about other cultures not only widens your horizons and enriches you personally but also helps to dissipate possible misunderstandings and even prejudices that one may have when faced with something unfamiliar by allowing one see things from other viewpoints. Cultural exchange, mutual understanding and thus more peaceful relations between nations and peoples are exactly what this world now needs more than ever in these turbulent times.

A lot of what you said matched my experience, but I'm not asian. I was "the smartest kid", and I didn't "fit in", so I didn't have friends. At larger schools (after grade 7) I met other people like me and made friends. Lots of parents pressure their kids for high grades, college, important careers. It's a stereotype for Jewish and Chinese parents, so it's probably true for more of them. I never saw anyone bullied because of their race. I don't think kids notice race very much. But they definitely notice funny names! So it seems to me being asian didn't affect your schooling very much. Thanks for a very interesting video, and the time you spent thinking about this. 现在我在学习普通话。

As a Bulgarian immigrant living in Italy, I totally felt the struggles of not knowing the local language when I came here in 2010. My school years were mostly lonely, but I slowly adapted into an introvert that is trying out a lot of new things just to experience the world within my own room - a faux-adventure, if you will. My knowledge of Bulgarian is low, I don't really like Italian as I only care about it for everyday usage, but English has always been something I prefer over others. I'm studying Japanese, mostly because I make content about a Japanese game that I wanna decipher because I'm illiterate, but I grew up enjoying the East Asian culture to bits. Whether it was the Dynasty Warriors games, fake Chinese-Japanese areas in games and the love for nature within these cultures, I love seeing things from a totally different perspective. I came across your channel mostly because your content is fun, but I'm also here for calligraphy tips, that of which you do have some explanations about. I actually might consider buying a proper brush pen - as I recently checked out some of the rollerball/gel pens you suggested in your videos to shoot my stationery into the stratosphere - because hanzi/kanji calligraphy has fascinated me since I was like an 8-year-old Lys. From what I've experienced, it's way harder than it appears to master it, but after picking up some key radicals and learning some kanji, I began to split up the characters which made them easier to write. I'm totally learning JP, but I may check out CN one day properly; I do play games with CN voiceovers after all (Honkai Impact 3rd, PGR, Genshin) so I would like to understand what the characters are actually saying. I do thank you for your tips and enjoy your cultural videos, plus it's nice to see you growing up into a person that blended in with the rest of your own local society. The Chinese writing system always intrigues me so I hope to see more history videos from you on those o/

So well said. As luck would have it I was stationed in Taiwan from 1971-1974 with the US Navy. I was introduced to and fell in love with Chinese culture (Mao and Zhang Jie Shi were both still alive). I spent my physician career helping the mainland Chinese acquire Family Medicine. For the first time in my young life in the 1971 era I realized what it was like to be a true minority. As I learned to appreciate the excellent nature of Chinese culture (respect for education, family and learning) I began to look upon Americans who came to Taiwan as oddly 'different'. There was a lot for a young American to learn and I am still on that path. I agree with the intent of exposing all parties to learning a lot more about each other's culture. We have everything to gain by this and a dreadful amount to lose.

Anglo culture, despite pretending to be “multicultural” is actually an extreme mono-culture. You can be any skin color, as long as you conform and “think Anglo.” If you start thinking Confucian, or talking factually about the how advanced China is (including the great government)…then you’ll get hate. Good for you! I first went to China in 2007 and it was a huge eye-opener. So much can be learned from East Asia.

I have some friends but, one in particular, he in canada and one in malaysia....we throw words around and i am pretty sure if i went to any place that spoke chinese i would get around ok.....but speaking is key....getting off track here.....but as you said learning the language of another country really open up your mind and you feel different as i have noticed....when i hear people make comments that are just not true about asians, generalities and such...it really bugs me. I am not so happy with the US that's for sure. People here are very narrow minded that needs to change soon because it will be the cause of our undoing as a nation. We all cry, laugh, love the same,..america needs to get in touch with their spirituality as so many other nations naturally are....that would make a world of difference...come from a compassionate place towards all people....like it or not we are all in this together .....hopefuilly covid has been a wake up call for all countries and their leaders......

One of my exceptions with this video is the idea that bullying is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Its victim blaming. That may have been your experience but that is far from universal. My 5- year-old niece was introduced to anti blackness on her first day of kindergarten by a student who didn't want to sit next to her because she was brown. That had nothing to do with how my niece saw herself. To boil racial tensions in the US down to people "thinking" the world is out to get them is gaslighting and implies racism isn't real but just something that exists in the minds of people impacted by it. That is a very harmful and naive assumption.

Mr. Wang, as an old white American, father of one half-Asian son, I would be proud to be the father of a human being like you. Let's say, maybe I can be your online virtual godfather.

When it comes to learning a 2nd language, the Chinese in China are more keen to see their kids in ESL to give a more competitive advantage. It’s the ABCs who feel they need to lose their native tongue to be more American. More like “banana people” being Yellow on the outside, White on the inside.

I’m a white British male and school was very different in England. I started high school around the time of the Afghanistan/Iraq wars, by the end of 2nd year, my school was almost 50% Islamic refugee students. But, I found it important to break the wall and communicate about their country they left behind plus what they can experience in England. One of my best friends is originally from Lebanon and now has British citizenship. As for being open-minded as an anglophone native, Chinese is my 11th language 😅 languages are basically my hobby and I’m always immersed every day, whether it be music, a tv show. KZfaq videos or studying.

A bit after the fact, only just found this video. I'm English as well and speak Cantonese, Mandarin, French and Spanish but Cantonese and French are my best ones. 11! I'm impressed!

是!無錯。Yeah, I agree. Your experience is kind of what it's like in Australia, though it is more multicultural. There is still this desire to conform to the Aussie mono or mainstream Anglo culture at least while growing up, and thus I also for a while did not identify much with being Chinese. Things now are different as I too also went to China and met family there. Either way, it is a matter of perspective and learning Chinese or any language is a way of gaining access to a new perspective. Thanks for this evaluation.

5:16 I'm Vietnamese American, and now I play the race card. I learn Chinese (because Chinese is the root of Vietnamese) to be more Chinese. I play Chinese Chess. I would say: Did you know that Chinese chess is closer to its common ancestor of Indian Chess (Chaturanga) than Western chess? (It is true). I say it to impress on other people that I am that much smarter than they are, even if they play Western chess, which I also play.

I've just found your channel. I lived in Beijing and Hong Kong for 11 years, working as a copy editor for China Daily in Beijing and the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. I've since retired and live in Indiana, and my Chinese has deteriorated through non-use. Glad to meet you, Wang Bo. Do you use an English first name, or does everyone call you "Bo"?

Thank you so much. Your video explained a lot of questions I had for a long time. Are you still living in the Chicago area? I would like to have you in my class to share your experience. By the way, I am teaching in a Chicago northern suburbs school.
