That was a tight video, I grew up in the Hills by the car wash on Saipan ST. , I can tell you it wasn’t easy but definitely showed me how to stand on my feet like a man and until this day I hold that self respect. My family moved to PH in the early 80’s from Shelltown to get away from the ghetto problems . In those days PH was a place to escape the gang life and the murders and robberies. I remember all my friends dads were from a hood in San Diego somewhere but not Paradise Hills. My neighbor and one of my best friends as a kid was Gerardo who ended up being Gato from PH and was murdered in Plaza Bonita in its early days. My other neighbors were Darnell and Preston Randsom half Pilipino and half black . We lived on Potomac st near the Rec center . Man I wish I still kept in touch with them. Slowly through the 80’s and 90’s you seen all the sons and daughters who’s parents moved there from different neighborhoods start to bang for the hood and being close to Encanto , Lomita Village, Spring Valley ; and National city it was not hard finding opps to bang on . Even the Pilipino gangs found them selves as opps . We also had a large Samoan presence which mostly banged for skyline which acts as a border for PH . Having family still in Shelltown there was no way I could be from a gang unless it was for the ones my family banged for. I refused to get jumped in and had lots of opportunities. For both PH or Shelltown . Well that’s my story . GB you

Excellent video!! Grew up in PH. Went to Zamarano, SCPA. and graduated from the charter school by the two story McDonald's in 2012. I loved growing up in PH, never a dull moment. Our culture is very unique in PH. We are so lucky to be a melting pot of East Africans, Filipinos, Mexicans, Islanders, blacks, and whites. No places like the hills. I feel like NaShon sounds like PH, something about the sound of his voice and laid back tone, reminds me of Ryan Anthony. I hope to see more videos, would love to see you touch on musicians from PH.

Man why did I watched this. Grew up in San Diego 80's to mid 90's til my family moved to the Philippines. SD has been and will always be called home for me. Went to Perry til my mom got me out and sent me to some school far away called Green. Went to Bell then Morse. But dude is right, live there nothing seems to be wrong with PH. It's home. Graffiti was big. Only crew I remember from then was JVC. And that two storey McDonald's, I remember walking home one day from Bell and some big as Samoan busted up this Mexican and walked out like nothing happen. People standing in line just looking at the menu like there were new choices. Memories.

I had a bad ass little Filipino girl I would also kick it with who lived out of Paradise Hills. She and her family was cool as shit. She ended up joining the military tho so we lost contact. Hopefully she’s doing okay.

Very good documentary. I was raised on parkside and in the Doriana apts. Dropped out of charter school by the Zapata taco shop lol. Used to walk from Reo dr to 2 story McDonald's everyday. Went to Lee elementary and Morse high.

I lived on the border between PH and NC near Harbison Ave. That street used to be a favorite for the NC and PH street racers. I cuss them out for waking me up with the vroom vroom, but had to secretly smile: someone was living the life! I was baptized at St. Michael's catholic church in the 'older' part of PH. I often did my homework in the PH Library, there. It was my favorite library. I liked so much better than the NC library farther away from me. My experience of the area goes back 40 years and I've seen it go through about three eras in that time. When I was a kid, it was a nice residential area. I remember it had the best Christmas decorations. I particularly loved the giant Christmas stars folks would hang on the backs of their houses from Manchester, etc. That era faded and PH became, kind of, boring with the most important thing being the rebuilt Naval Housing off of Allegheny. Then, things started to change for the worse and I heard of more crime in the area. That was so sad. I'm so sorry for the Papa shot doing his job! That was so far removed from the PH I remembered as a kid. You can't imagine. So different . . .

I heard all the stories growing up, but other than a shooting next door and a robbery at the Kragen on Paradise Valley Rd, I (fortunately) wasn't affected by any violent crimes. And that little walking area behind the skate park just below just got a nice little landscaping facelift. The homies living in their cars there, not so much but hey, things take time. Paradise Valley road after dark is still wild af.

I am a OG bullock boy my parents bought a house from the ground up back in 1986 across the Canyon from Morse high school. It’s been 25+ years since I left and it brings back all kinds of memories. Went to Fulton next to Morse then to bell jr high in 88 then to Morse 92. I could tell tons of story’s but the only ones I remember the most was back in 88 when starting the school year off my mom was about to drop me off and there was a mass execution of people killed on the front lawn of the Morse high school and my looking at me and say have nice day like WTF? I had a convertible purple lowered truck in high school and I remember leaving school during the Rodney king riots man I thought my ass was going to die driving down skyline. Ph was no joke back then I knew everyone and everyone knew me. I left in 1993 thinking if I stay here I’m either going to die or go to jail, meth was out of hand, crime was everywhere the city I was born in didn’t look the same so I left. I still have homies that send me videos of my old house and the hood but I know I can never go home again. Much love SD PH

My family used to live in the apartments on Potomac by the drive thru convenient store then we relocated and got a house on Manos Drive by Parkside. I miss those 80’s-early 90’s Paradise Hills days.

This was nice seeing a documentary of my old neighborhood loved growing up in PH. Block Busters pops Taco Shop introduced me to Carne Asada fries and Chips. McDonald’s was the meetup spot we messed up for a lot of people doing stupid stuff on the second floor 🤦🏿‍♂️ I enjoyed living out there even raised my kids in the neighborhood for a time. Now it’s getting bad with all the bums and crack heads roaming the streets. Still mad that PH has buses now we had to walk or ride a bike to get to places back in the day 😂😂 The only bus that was there was the National City bus that took you to Plaza Bonita. Thanks for the memories I still roll through once a week to get that refreshing vibe back.

Im 59 now and logan heights RS,30 , shelltown38,gbs , lomas26 and sherman27,20 was all you would hear banging hard and a little bit of encanto69 and lonita 70s.but the biggest barrios in south east back in my day were logan and sherman.

These areas in this video are predominately outside of PH; mostly in the Bay Terraces, [2-Story McDonalds, Woodman Village, Meadowbrook APTs, Mariner Village APTs, Bethune Elementary, Bell Middle School, Morse High School, SCPA], some streets in Alta Vista & in Skyline [Skyline Dr., O'Farrell]. The ONLY areas that is Paradise Hills in the video is only the skatepark and the rec center. There's usually 3 reasons why people associate the BayTerraces, Skyline, and Lomita-Jamacha as Paradise Hills: -All of Southeast San Diego's landscape is hilly = hills -'Paradise' Valley Rd is the main street that can take you to Spring Valley to National City before it becoming E. Plaza Blvd going west. -The Paradise Hills gang [vPH or 1608] be doing a lot of graffiti in these communities and a lot of y'all "natives" see this everyday as you go to school, go to work, etc. // It would be bullshit if you didn't see this coming up. I've been living in Southeast Daygo 10+ years from Ocean View Blvd in the westside of Southeast all the way to the eastside in the Brooks and never one day once I landed in the Bay Terraces, never called it Paradise Hills. Lol if you think I'm just full of shit, just simply look at Google Maps. No hate, cool doc but the natives got their geography fucked up, that's all.
