Sugar Baby is an early season watermelon, coming to maturity approximately 75-85 days after germination. The small size of the fruits, and relatively short time to harvest, make Sugar Baby on of the easier varieties to cultivate.
The fertilizer I use is (A) YARA Kristalon Red NPK 12:12:36 + (B)Yara Calcinit 15.5% N + 26.3% CaO. Make the fertilizer into a stock solution A and B .
Mix with equal ratio and dilute to EC 1.5 when first transplanting. Increase the EC 0.2 every week until. Capped at EC3.1 for the remaining season.
Happy Gardening!

very interesting video. One thing that I'm curious about, is the need for the watermelon plants to have support for the melons. These were small enough that they seemed to be okay hanging with vine support, but many watermelons are so large it seems they need some sort of netting to hold them up or else they will break off the stem, is this true? The Sugar babies are nice enough sized that they seem to hold up without netting or support. I'm curious also if with enough fertilizer/neutrients, if we need to cut off the side branches, thus reduces total yield of our fruits? I've always heard of people saying to cut off extras in order to produce more energy for the fruits, but if the plant has enough energy to do everything then I don't see why not. Usually it's a trade of how much energy the plant can get, vs how much output, but if we are getting rid of leaves that would absorb energy, then wouldn't it be beneficial to keep them, if' there's enough nutrients being given to the plant?
@TonysExploration
@TonysExploration Жыл бұрын
Well, baby melons is not that heavy, simple trellis will be able to support the weight. For big melon, just let it run on the ground. Baby melon is okay to have 2-3 per plant , you won't have any degradation in quality or size...Theoretically, yes, if pinch-off method does help to maximize the size. My observation is that more leaves don't mean more energy given to the fruits, even given enough fertilizer.... because more energy is driven to make more leaves and more stems...If you start to reduce the leaves...then the excess nutrient has no way to go...thus all energy channels to the fruits.....Some plants, if you reduce all the leaves at once, it tricks the plant that he going to die...thus quickly producing flower and fruits...after all...all plants pass down the gene and offspring via seed(fruits) before dying.

Could you write a complete guide on fertilising sugar baby watermelon? Like when to start fertilising, how often, and the amount/volume of fertiliser solution used each time? Thanks in advance
@TonysExploration
@TonysExploration 6 ай бұрын
Well, important is the soil pH or the fertiliser solution pH must be around 6-6.5. You need to invest in the EC meter if using liquid fertilizer. Else and compound fertilizer with lower N, higher P and K will do. For the volume, that is really need observation, because the weather, sunny ,cloudy or raining all make the differences.

Im posting this comment in hopes of getting help. Ive planted seeds in seconf half of May. Seeds have germinated and every plant has formed few leaves but they seem wringled and underdeveloped, only 1 or 2 leaves are good per plant. They are planted in 30L pot per 2 plants. Since ive planted them we had really heavy weather, lots of rain but pots are drilled at the bottom so water escapes really quickly. Im wondering did too much rain caused them to somewhat die. Leaves did not fall off nor grow any larger for 1 month and im wondering can i do anything to save them. Seems like they just stuck in vegetative state. Each pot haves “compost container” in wich i throw spoiled strawberries and strawberry leaves wich im also growing rather sucsessfully in hopes of generating food for watermelon but nothing seems to help.
@TonysExploration
@TonysExploration Жыл бұрын
Base on your description, I can roughly guess is due to the mosaic virus. Try to Google image if this fit your description. The mosaic virus will cause stunted growth, yellow spotted leaves and wringles. This virus transmitted by pest especially white fly

probably won’t get a response but worth a try. I’ve been growing a watermelon but the leaves don’t look like the ones in this video. Almost all of them are quite spikey don’t seem as smooth and slightly round as the leaves in this video. This is the case with every other watermelon time lapse video. The flowers and so on are growing and look exactly like the one in the video but the massive difference in how the leaves came out makes me wonder whether I’ve done something wrong.
@TonysExploration
@TonysExploration Жыл бұрын
Well, there are some many types of melon variety and cultivar, if the leaves don't look the same, is perfectly normal. Focus on flower pollination, and check what kind of melon you get! If you have come to flower stage, you are on the right path....all the melons family have similar flower lookalike.
@ottz2506
@ottz2506 Жыл бұрын
@@TonysExploration Hopefully i’ve managed to explain myself well. The leaves just look crazy spiky and every time I look at them, they just don’t look like what I’ve seen in every watermelon time lapse video. You’d think a good portion of the leaves had been munched away with only the spikes and a bit of leaf left behind. Whereas with yours, they just….look like leaves. My plant has also not gone through the “leaves overflow the pot” stage yet which so many timelapse seem to get through with ease. That said, the flowers are the only things that look anything like the time lapses which is the only hope I’ve managed to hold onto so far. I keep saying that it must obviously be a watermelon plant. I mean, I took the seed from the watermelon and put it in the soil and it grow from where I buried it haha. I keep getting told that the plant just looks like a weed. Hearing that can be discouraging when you’ve never done this before especially when it comes to close relatives and especially when I’m very new to growing fruit in general. Thank you for your comment. I much appreciate it.

@@anonymousf454 is relatively easy for me, because I am in tropical country. All I need to sow the seeds two week apart and I can have melon all year long. some people say pruning the side vines can lower the sweetness of the fruit because of less leaves and force the plant to focus its energy to recreating more vines instead of energy/nutrient focus going to the fruit. what are your thoughts on this?
@TonysExploration
@TonysExploration Жыл бұрын
Good question! I cant comment on this, because obviously I don't systematical doing research on this and the sample size from my previous experience wasn't big enough. What I can observe is the size indeed grow larger , the sweetness definitely relate to the growing temperature as well.

Great video. With your growing method, does each plant produce 1 fruit? And if so, that's because you trim the side shoots?
@TonysExploration
@TonysExploration 2 жыл бұрын
for this cultivar , up to 2-3 per plant still reasonable. If you watch carefully, I do have two pots that I experiment that carry more than 1. Once i fix how many fruits per plant, I choose to trim the extra side shoots to focus the energy towards the fruits.

I didnt have to hand pollinate my melons that I have seen so far, is that normal? Ive seen some bee friends going from flower to flower, and its actually helped tons cause a. I dont have to be terrified of a random bug coming at me, b. I dont have to do the work c. its cool to see nature doing its thing. I have so many cantaloups, and one big sugar baby growing, the others are a little bit smaller but im still really happy they are all growing! Not to mention my tomatoes are coming out of their little shells, and my red peppers are starting to grow flowers😲this is like my first time ever gardening, and there's so many melons and plants, so I am trying to learn as much as I can

@@TonysExploration Yeah they are growing really big, I just dont know if I should put them vertically, it feels messy when I go to look and water them, and i cant weed easily, I havent been able to since a while ago since theres so many leaves and stems. im afraid that something will happen if I put it verticle since there is already melons about a tennis ball or bigger growing, but it just feels so messy with how many are growing, and the space inside the raised garden feels like its getting to small😞
