Let's explore growing watermelons from seed to harvest and the steps I take to grow these awesome fruits. I'll show you how to grow Watermelons throughout the whole process, and we'll grow 2 interesting varieties - Gold in Gold watermelon and Moon & Stars watermelon.
In this grow guide, we'll cover questions like how to grow watermelons from seed, how to plant watermelons, as well as things like pollination, fertilizing, watering, how to tell when watermelons are ripe, plus a taste test of course!
I'm excited to be sharing this Summer growing journey with you, and I hope it helps to give you some insight and inspiration to grow your own delicious watermelons in your garden.
Buy me a coffee :) www.buymeacoffee.com/thekiwig...
Extra Watermelon Growing Tips:
- Watermelon seeds need warm temperatures to germinate, at least 18c (65f).
- If you have a short Summer growing season, you can get the seedlings going somewhere warm indoors so they're ready to be transplanted once it's warm enough.
- I try to avoid starting them too early in Spring as you want them to continue with their seedling vigor into rapid growth through nice warm Summer weather. They grow especially fast when temperatures are 25c (77f) and above.
- You can get varieties that grow and mature faster than others, so have a quick google of your chosen variety to see if you have a growing season long enough to suit the amount of days that variety needs to mature. For example: Gold in Gold variety matures around 70 days from transplant & Moon & Stars needs a longer season at 85 days from transplant.
- Watermelon seeds can also be sown directly once the temperature is warm enough outside, and works best if you live somewhere with a season that caters for the full length of time that these take to grow.
-Above all else, if it doesn't work out well the first time you grow them, have another go next year! I've failed multiple times growing them in the past, but this is the best way to learn, grow and become a better gardener!
Wishing you all the best with the growing, and let me know how it goes! :)

Every time I watch your videos I think about what a job it must be to take all this footage, store it, then sort through it and edit it together for a consistent narrative that sometimes spans months or years! For transplanting anything in the Cucurbit family, it seems that any root disturbance is basically a death sentence, so your newspaper idea is fantastic. Biggest thing is to remember that trying to plant multiple plants in a single container that will require separation upon transplanting will ruin your melon dreams.

I actually grew watermelons this year and they turned out great! Although I didn’t do the best job because it was my first time planting watermelons, it was really fun and felt very rewarding when I finally harvested and ate them. I had a batch of 6 watermelons. Don’t know what type they were though.

Those Watermelons looked amazing and hopefully I can grow some up here in México as the weather is basically summer all year long. Been trying to get some grapes up and running and with the pandemic I finally did since I had the time. Now I'm following your vids for dragonfruit since its a local fruit where I'm living and if the spring/summer is kind, maybe I will try watermelons as well. Thanks for all the info you give us!

One of these days I'll remember that your growing seasons are flipped compared to here in the US before I start watching a video and not be slightly confused for the first 20 seconds lol. It's a nice change of pace that you collect a whole bunch of footage over the course of growing something for one video rather than making multiple videos over the course of growth. Your channel has a nice laidback calmness, and it's easy to see how much you enjoy growing things and all your animals. I also enjoy getting to see a whole bunch of cool and unique plants being grown that I can't grow due to my climate. Thank you for sharing all this with us :).

Did well growing pumpkins but kept the mound under a grow tarp where I could control the water. Hand pollinated most of them. Want to try watermelons next. Haven’t had the yellow variety since I was a kid. Most the melons in our local markets are the smaller round kind; but we should be able to grow larger ones. Glad you mentioned goat manure. We have a couple that produce a steady supply. LOL. Thanks again for the inspiration. I’ll check out some of your other videos as well 😎👍

Your videos are fun to watch, to say the least. Grafting a tomato onto a potato would have seemed absurd had you not demonstrated this! Also, for many years my primary ambition was to become a US expat in NZ. Nice to know that there could be more to life than Aukland.

Hello, just discovered your channel. I am struggling with my little garden...been potting vegetables and not having too much luck 🤞. The rabbits have been having a field day and now things have just stopped growing 😂. I am subscribing to your channel. I want to learn some great tips! LoL.

I’m jealous. I’ve tried multiple time to grow Moon and Stars. I live in a arid desert environment with extreme heat 3-4 months of the year. The first year I planted late and the melons only grew to softball size. The other two years I lost most of my garden to extreme heat. We are in a serious drought situation so I’ll be transitioning some produce to indoor hydroponics. I will be reconfiguring my garden to create a less hostile microclimate🤞. I might give the Moon and Stars another try.

Use rock mulch it’ll help in a desert environment since you don’t have hay or trees to help you out.

Here in the North east part of the USA we only have seedless melons. Those seeds in your watermelons are amazing.

Excellent video, must've taken you a long time to record and edit all these clips. Gotta try growing watermelons properly one day, it looks very rewarding. I'll have to look for that golden variety, really interested in discovering what it tastes like.
