Growing your own Moss for Bonsai

4 жыл бұрынToday we're going over two different ways to start your own moss garden, along with a little project I found myself working on. Nothing really bonsai related, but once I started I felt like I needed to finish it and I think it turned out okay.

I might make another video on moss this year. It's not something that I really use, but I know a lot of people really enjoy making their bonsai landscapes with it.

That, wanna be friends, bot is disconcerting, it's everywhere... Anyway, I have been subscribing to as many channels as I can stomach to watch, and yours is coming along nicely. My computer is broken at the moment, 😩 and I have a yard full of rescues, seedlings, and little projects that are basically brand-new. I've been thinking about biting the bullet and using my phone to make a short video.

Robert- I just started making videos on my iPhone and using iMovie. I'm not that interesting or have great stuff but I enjoy it. You should give it a shot!...... and Smalltrees-thanks for the moss video, I'm having a heck of a time growing moss on my trees.

Bag End - that's a fun way to grow moss. I also liked the idea of coating your cinder blocks. I think I'll do the same thing in my back yard. I never thought of grinding moss and spreading it - useful information! I normally would just use the second method, chopping a little piece and letting it fill in with time. This leaves checkerboard patterns all over my backyard and my bonsai look rather lame while the moss is still propagating, so I hope the slurry is quicker to develop, or at least develops more evenly.

From what I have read, it will be more even but may be a little slower to develop. Another idea is to make the slurry and apply it to a fine fabric mesh and then affix the mesh to a vertical surface. That may make adhesion a little better although I suppose if the mesh fell off in the future it may take the moss with it.

Is that sand you're using to sculpt bag end?

It is. I never took any follow-up pictures but the moss is thriving!

@@smalltrees very nice! I was worried the foundation might shrink or fall apart over time being sand. I think I'll try something similar.

Oh and are you able to trim the moss down as it grows to maintain the general picture of bag end?

I think as long as it is reasonably well packed, it should be okay. Might want to use something a little more solid if you are going to make something bigger than what I did. This was about 18"*12" or so.

Ideally you put it in a greenhouse or terrarium, but anywhere that gets indirect sunlight will do. Mist it with water daily or put it somewhere where it will stay damp. Keep your dog and birds away lol. Moss needs contact with water not only because most species don't have roots but also because the sperm released by the male plants needs water to swim and fertilize.
