Creating a Landscape Container out of Concrete [Great for Penjing or bonsai forests]

Most bonsai pots are fairly traditional in shape and size. So what to do when you have the need for a large landscape container for a forest or penjin planting, and perhaps even a cliff or rock? Make one yourself of course!
There are many approaches to doing this. Some will use composite plastics or thermal plastics and fiberglass hulls. In this video I will use a concrete base over a steel frame.
Main ingredient is outdoor tile glue, and outdoor Grout with an additive to make it water resistant (normally used in concrete/cement for basement construction).
Step by step explanation on how I do this.

Definitely want to try this one day! Thanks for the instructions :) I have this vision of making something with a hint of Kimura. Going to try cutting up /sculpting aerated concrete blocks first as I can't find lumps of pumice!

I am not sure what it is called. It is a cement-like powder which is added to cement-based products to make them water-closed. It is used in building basements here!

Awesome tutorial again Jelle. By using fibreglass instead of concrete, you can make sure you have a much lighter construction, and still be just as strong. ;-) maybe try that in a tutorial too?

Great work Jelle, it looks awesome! I saw that you cut yourself quite a bit. Around our area in hardware stores you can find aluminum mesh (it comes in big rolls and is usually around 30€, but you get like 50 times the mesh compared to what you used). The aluminum mesh isn’t as sharp, it isn’t as stable either but it is way finer. You can really shape it well without hurting yourself and it catches the cement very well, I’ve tried it!

Oh, wow, I'm loving these shapes. I've never seen anything like it; it is absolutely fantastic. What was the material you added to make the cement waterproof? Because the small mesh is so stiff and prone to cutting fingers, have you ever tried filling the holes of the largest mesh with something like papier-mâché before adding the concrete?

Not sure what it is called. It is a material that is added to cement to really make it waterclosed. It is used in concrete for basements here.

If it's fully enclosed by the waterproof cement, there shouldn't be an issue with freezing and expansion. If there are still occasional gaps in coverage, then yes I suppose you're right.

Have you tried hypertufa? Basically adding perlite and/or coconut coir to the cement mixture. The perlite will add beneficial aspects to the medium. Give it a search. Cheers!

Bored? Not really. Just do not feel like wiring trees every day! (Only 50 more to wire/prune before repotting starts!)

This stuff is cement-based tile glue. I am sure there are loads of additives to make it somewhat flexible and durable! But I just use it as it comes from the package!

It is all the same stuff! Just mixed a bit of grout colouring in there

@@busterbrotherton Nope, just the regular outdoor cement-based tile glue, and for color, I used the stuff that you use for the joints between tiles.

You mention, "can find in any garden centre". In my country you cannot find cement at any garden centre. And when I ask them what pots are made of, they cannot tell me. So I Google a lot, and watch KZfaq. It seems I will have to learn over here by trial and error. I will have to try different cements, and see what works. Even I our building material stores I struggle to find the right advice.

:) Oh, thank you so much!. I do have gloves, but for some things it just does not work the same way. So in this case I consciously decided to not use them!
