Nice video as always, Jelle! The Chinese Elms over rocks that I prepared earlier this year following your instructions have slowed down for winter, but have been growing well! I can see lots of roots at their base, and had quite some growth in the canopy. Haven’t trimmed them yet, and I’ll soon share an update video! Thanks for the valuable tips!

Hi Klaartje, thank you so much! I water with a shower head on my garden hose. I just shower them. I water these at the same time as all my trees, which in summer is 1-2 times a day. WIthin weeks the roots will start to grow out below the cover, typically

Thank you my bonsai brother. You are a pro and a great teacher. What kind of rocks have a lot of tiny character so it looks like a massive scale to extenuate the bonsais scale? Maybe stupid question, but can you grow root over rock in the ground to grow faster?

Great explanation and very interested about using aluminum foil straight over the young roots. I started my trdient maple and chinese elm root over rocks about 3 years ago and they are still buried in pots. I will start to have a look at them and uncover the top few cm next spring. The hardest issue i find is trying not to rush the process. I have just one completed chinese elm root on rock and that started in 2015 with a young cutting. Your advice is spot on - and do as many as you are able. Cheers for this one, Xav

Really nice tutorial Jelle. What is the purpose of adding the substrate over the aluminum foil? Thanks, keep growing
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
Hey Matt, thank you. The substrate on the one hand keeps the alu foil nice and tight against the rock. Next to this, it isolates a little bit, so that the sun does not burn on the foil directly. Or so I tell me!

What do you mean? I water the roots, with a hose or watering can, just like all trees
@firemouse666
@firemouse666 Жыл бұрын
@@GrowingBonsai thanks for your reply! I meant that maybe the foil and additional pot would shield the roots from the water, and in that case you could put the pot into a flat bucket or such and immerse it. However that could rinse the soil away so I figured it might be tricky to water.

Thank you for the video. I've just one question: you keep the big windswept bonsai at full sun wuthout protection? I mean, the sun over the aluminium foil won't cook the roots? Thanx

Quick question: it seemed like you used a different substrate composition for attaching the roots to the rock; what was in that substrate? I've collected a few rocks from the local coastline I'm considering for a future project. They're not as cracked/porous as yours are since they're mostly granite or gneiss, but they haven't been worn too smooth yet. Hopefully they should still make visual sense.

Hi Jelle, i am a little confused or maybe i missed something?! but it looked like you did not put the cocopeat all the way down to the potting mix before adding the foil. Does this not mean that once the roots get to the edge of the cocopeat, they will dry up and die before reaching the soil below the rock? Thanks Andrew
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, In general I think the area between rock and alu will stay fairly moist. The substrate also serves to just keep the roots in place initially. I think I could hav explained better what I am intending there :)
@andrewbeattie5245
@andrewbeattie5245 Жыл бұрын
@@GrowingBonsai Ahh i see, i was worried that the roots would not bridge the space between the cocopeat and the soil below the rock but as you say the foil will keep moisture in. Cheers.👍
