Soil in containers can become hydrophobic, which means that it will repel water rather than absorb it. This is bad news for your plants roots! Soak containers in a bucket of water to make sure it gets absorbed rather than just passing through the soil. This is a great way to make sure your containers don't dry out as quickly.

What a great idea I’ve had the hardiest plants die in those baskets! 😅 I live in Yuma, AZ. I’ll have to try this.

Philip plastic bottle with water poke a hole on the top and the bottom it was slowly seep into the plant you can paint your bottle to make it look nice or you can hang the bottle over it so it drips slowly

That's a great hanger! I need to find things like that. Poor quality plasfic stuff is all I have currently

I use a DIY ollas. Basically a dollar store terracotta pot ( no sealant) then I glue a dollar store glass plate to the big opening. Then I flip it upside down so only the little hole is showing and bury that in the middle of the basket just above dirt level. Then the when I fill that with water and it will keep watering my plant all day if needed. I plant annuals in my baskets so when I pull them out and replant in the spring you will see a ton of roots that encircle the terracotta pot. My baskets are small so I use small pots. The smallest pots are probably only 6 inches across so there is still plaenty of dirt to help insulate those roots for the summer heat.

@dunedainmom I used the big tube of gorilla glue. You will need a caulk gun for that one. There are cheaper ones just make sure they are for use underwater and are for masonry or brick and ceramic or glass. I did 7 large ones and around 14 medium ones with 2 tubes. If you live near a 99 Cents Only store they have a bunch of medium sized terracotta from. $1.49 to 3.99 for the big ones. Home Depot would have those same sizes from $6 to $12. They will only have the cheap pots in spring with the gardening stuff but you can get them from Home Depot anytime.
