Growing Up Without Borders

Күн бұрын

Hi Guys, We are still in India, exploring such a massive country. In this video, we are making a move from Munnar to Madurai - the city that never sleeps.
Looking at the map, Madurai wasn’t that far away, but we still had to go over a huge mountain pass, so we were in for 4-5 hours of driving.
Luckily, it was a scenic trip with breathtaking mountain slopes full of tea plantations, random waterfalls, and a few elephant crossings. We didn’t see any of the gentle giants, but we definitely ran into a lot of cows.
Tucked away in the base of the mountain was a nice restaurant where our driver took us for lunch. However, we still had a good few hours in front of us, so we quickly got back on the road.
Arriving in Madurai, everything felt different - the people, the sounds, the smells. Our home away from home for the next few days was the Poppys Hotel. poppyshotels.com/poppys-hotel... The warm welcome we received once again proved how hospitable Indians are. We just loved all the smiles and genuine kindness.
We checked into a nice spacious double room with big beds and lots of space for us to work and the girls to do some school assignments.
After we freshened up a little bit, we went down to the restaurant for a small bite that turned into another feast. Even though we weren’t hungry at all, it was literally impossible to resist all those finger-licking Indian recipes!
Our first morning in Madurai started with yet another delicious breakfast that got us ready for a long day of exploration.
The first stop was the epic, over 650 years old Meenakshi Hindu Temple. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to film inside (or enter the main Temple, for that matter), but it was still quite the experience. The Meenakshi temple is full of golden statues in honor of the Hindu gods, but it’s also a great place to learn about Hindu culture. Visitors can explore the temple grounds and take part in a number of rituals and festivals too.
Word of warning, though - security at the temple is incredibly tight, so make sure you don’t carry anything of value because they will make you leave it in a locker outside the temple (including your phones).
Leaving the massive temple crowds behind, we drove to Madurai King’s Palace, a.k.a. Thirumalai Nayak Palace, which dates back to the 17th century. This is a massive architectural masterpiece, yet it’s 4 times smaller than the original palace complex. Incredible!
Our last stop for the day was the Gandhi Museum in Madurai. We learned so much about the life and cause of this incredible human whom Indians proudly call the “Father of the nation.” His legacy lives through his deeds and sacrifice. The story this museum told moved us to the core. It’s absolutely worth visiting.
Back at the Poppys Hotel, we decided to go for a much-needed refreshing pool dip because the weather was scorching hot. But it got us hungry, and it was time for another incredible Tamil-Nadu-style dinner.
How do you like our journey through India so far?

Dude. They are not disgusted by other religious practices. They simply told about the unhygienic condition, it has nothing to do with removing shoes but rather to do with how the condition is there. In fact they were super respectful towards Indian culture and religions, more appreciative than some of us Indians. We need to stop getting offended when others point out our faults.

A little tidbit about the Madurai Meenakshi Temple: They are REALLY strict about the "no photography" orders in and around the temple. Even filmmakers were denied permission to shoot anything inside the temple premises, so the art directors had to make sets for the portrayal of this temple.

Madurai Meenakshi Temple is astounding. Inside this temple, there is a statue of white elephant near Durga Kovil. It is said that this elephant statue came alive twice. To commemorate this event, devotees offer sugar cane on Makara Samkranthi day (Jan 14 or 15) to the statue. Ever heard?

You guys are so amazing and so brave to try new things and food. The most important thing to remember, when you visit another country, is to leave your way of life and to understand the beauty of each and every country ie culture, food, music, etc. History plays a big part in the Indian culture where the race is oppressed and made to believe as a second class citizen for over 2 centuries. Until you have lived in that mindset, it is difficult to understand why a great nation like India is so backward and poor in pretty much every aspect of our social dynamics. I love all of you guys for your sense of adventure and for making every effort to appreciate and understand our culture. Please don't stop there but do some readings on our history and you will find out that Tamil is one of the oldest languages in the world. I love you guys. Take care and don't stop exploring. Bless you.

You missed a real opportunity to grasp and explore the spiritual culture of Madurai. The temples have huge historic significance when it comes to its architecture, it's spiritual dimensions, it's energy force. These temples are original creations going back some 5000 years in it's development and posterity. There are rules for decorum like with any other place of worship. Temples are clean snd well maintained therefore people pray in various positions . If someone reaches out to shake your hand, you need not reciprocate, you can however show gratitude with a namaste gesture , that keeps everyone safe and clean

16:25 weird how your raising your daughter to point out disabled people and call them gross? Seems like instilling Empathy and Sympathy for those less fortunate aren't your parental pillars. Also you wouldn't wear a skirt to visit a mosque so why wear ones to visit one of the most renowned Hindu temples in the world? Seems like you expected special treatment to film inside as well for some reason and were annoyed to realize the rules applied yo your family as well.

In olden days, temples were built in such a way that the floor at the center of the temple were good conductors of these positive vibrations allowing them to pass through our feet to the body. Hence it is necessary to walk barefooted while you enter the center of the temple. The Five senses of the body get activated when you are inside the temple if the positive energy inside the temple is absorbed properly that is only if you ensure that all the five senses ie sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell are activated in your body while in the temple.

I am in Madurai now and was looking for a video with some information about the place, so I watched this one. I am a foreigner, but I lived in India for 2 years and have been coming yearly since. Though I feel sorry foreigners can not enter some temples, watching this video I totally understand why. Foreigners just traveling in India for a cultural or touristic experience, they don't come to those places with the deeper understanding of how sacred they are. So, they judge and criticise. They only see dirt in a place filled with a Divine Energy. They miss the real experience focusing on dirty floor or avoiding being cumplemed by the loving Indian people saying that, because they touched the flor, they should not be touching them. Yes, watching this video, I understand better now why foreigners are not allowed in some temples in South India.

Yeah I must admit it’s hard for us to understand everything we see inside the temples. Extremely different from anything we’ve ever experienced before.

Well said !!! May be she was a kid ..will learn the culture,,little late ,,,but I've never seen anyone complaint about such stuff ,, because you need to see good stuff beyond such bad things around you ,,,it will take time ,,though ,I'm from Madurai it is dirty and dusty and chaos but there is a linearity even in that chaos...😅
