This is a valid counter point so in this video I will try to demonstrate the same thing again but against a real person, My buddy Longshot, at the end of the day the concepts remain the same, take High PK AMRAAM shots at the Tomcat forcing him to defend while you notch his Aim-54s get close enough to the Tomcat to either kill him with an AMRAAM for Fox-2 him. The concept here is to demonstrate there is nothing to fear from the Aim-54 it can actually be defeated easily if you know how. Thank you for watching and hope everyone is doing well. Much Love see you in the next video.

@@davidsmith8997 both GS and longshot where being very gentlemanly and STTing each other for each shot. The problem is when shot in STT the AIM54 is basically a big AIM7 as it will not turn on its own seeker head. In essence the 14 was having to fight not just the 16 but its AIM120s as well where as the 16 just had to beat the AWG-9. Tho i will say that the premise of GS's point in this video is correct.

@@davidsmith8997 to a point yes both aircraft are not utilizing every trick they have but what GS is trying to show is that the 14 is not invincible in the BVR arena. What it is is a weapons platform with impressive abilitys but requires a skilled team to operate at its peak ability. Now i dont know know how much Longshot understands about the AWG-9 WCS but if he was going to launch a STT 54 he should have done a 30 degree dive after to put GS against the skyline instead of allowing him to drop below the horizon. One function of the AWG-9 WCS is that if the STT target or any Pulse Doppler mode for that matter is pointed up 3 degrees from the horizon the Notch filter is automatically disabled . This would reduce the effectiveness of the notch but it is still possible to mess with the lock the AWG-9 can be finicky with rapid changes in aspect when tracking a target

I'm glad you mentioned the difference in technological age of the two aircraft. The Viper has received continuous updates, while the Tomcat being flown is positively ANCIENT. A -D model Tomcat would be more competitive, using a better data link, but even then, it hasn't received the modernization that the Viper has, nor has the Phoenix. Had the ASF21 program been approved (thanks, Cheney!), the modern version of the Tomcat would absolutely be able to give a Viper a run for its money.

@EvolvedTactical
@EvolvedTactical 3 жыл бұрын
@@kahlrhoam6769 yes, one of the planned upgrades was a frame less windscreen. Improved flaps and slats would have increased the maneuverability of the Tomcat using "combat flaps" without the risk of getting them jammed. New engines would have given it a Mach 1.2-1.4 supercruise ability. All glass cockpits, integrated helmet mounted sights, improved radar cross section, and adding more fuel and payload were all planned. It's likely that, if the Tomcat were updated, the AIM54 would have seen similar upgrades. But even if it didn't, the Tomcat would have been able to carry a whole bunch of AMRAAMs into the fight. Instead, we got the Super Hornet....

Just pitching an idea here. There was a training exercise between the Thai airforce and Chinese airforce, gripen vs J11. The opening day saw the J11 score perfect kill ratio against the gripens in fox 2 fights, but day 2 saw a complete reversal in BVR. It might make an interesting exercise to repeat using multiple PvP.
@qiyuxuan9437

Well, the J11A used in that exercise is pretty much the same J11A in DCS(Su27 with N001 radar) It is almost a generation behind gripen in terms of radar technology, so no surprice it lost in bvr. In ACM tho, the high maneuvering Su27 platform with R73 off bore capable missile via hmd is very deadly. In DCS, F15 vs Su27/J11A is pretty simlair, F15C has the bvr advantage while Su27 with R73 has the ACM advantage.

I'm enjoying the shift to demonstrating BVR tactics! I'm wondering, tho, that since I never saw the Phoenix's missile symbol on your RWR, does that mean that you were actually notching the F-14's radar and not the Phoenix's (i.e. the Phoenix never got to the point of going pitbull before you broke lock)? I assume that if a Phoenix does ever get to pitbull, you'd then have to notch THAT radar and not the 14's, right?
@Mike_Romeo

Nicely done. The only situation where it can get kinda dicey for the Viper is if the Tomcat fires a Pulse-STT Sparrow below 10nm and you are down to sidewinders. Ideally, if everyone respects the MAR it'll end in a stalemate and everyone flies back home.
@JETZcorp
@JETZcorp 2 жыл бұрын
I've done a lot of PSTT Sparrow shots against notching bandits, and it doesn't work. You have a great solid lock but the missile just flies straight into nowhere. I don't know if a real continuous-wave guidance signal has a notch or if it's just a DCS thing, but I know in the sim you can notch a PSTT Sparrow right down to merge distances. In my view, the job of a Tomcat against a notching bandit is to keep the missiles coming so that the bandit must stay in his notch or face certain death, then it's usually a Sidewinder that gets the kill. That works pretty well, but if your bandit has 120s and 9Xs, it's not so hard for him to dip out of his notch for 1 second and force you to break your siege.
@UkraineStar77
@UkraineStar77 2 жыл бұрын
@@JETZcorp Sure, the sparrow can get chaffed, not neccessarily notched. You can't notch pulse/monopulse. You technically could do the same in PD in a 3 degree lookcup (MLC filter disabled). If the bandit stays on the notch he either gets picked up by your wingman who'll be at an offset or your sidewinder. Sparrows on the Tomcat have been pretty broken for the past year now anyway.
@JETZcorp
@JETZcorp 2 жыл бұрын
@@UkraineStar77 I think the Sparrows in DCS don't have a very realistic seeker. I think they basically behave the same as a Fox-3 except they just give up if the lock is broken. I don't think the details of the guidance is actually modeled. When I shoot a Sparrow from a Tomcat at a notching bandit, it's dumb right off the rail, same as a Phoenix. I was disappointed about it because I thought I'd found a cure to my buddy's Hornet.

I agree about the radar. I've read that AWACS operators before datalink hated working with F-16s, because they were constantly asking questions and had a lot of trouble acquiring targets. Whereas if they talked to an F-15, the Eagle driver would find the bandit immediately at long range and just take care of business on his own. I'm sure the v5 is better than those older APG-68s, but no one says it's the match of a 63v1 radar Eagle. Yet in DCS, if anything the Viper's radar is stronger.

the one and only way that you can combat the notch weakness is turning off the notch filter and firing an STT phoenix at the bandit. And even then that method only works in so many scenario's
@GyntonikSoul
@GyntonikSoul 3 жыл бұрын
the biggest problem on dcs with the tomcat is if you have to rely on jester, you will be notched easily. Too easily. With a good R.I.O. you can avoid that. Yeah, sure, you can notch maybe the first phoenix in TWS, but the others in a s.t.t. lock? The F16 is a demon in bvr and in general Air to Air, and the tomcat too. But without a competent r.i.o. and with a skilled f16 pilot, the tomcat won't stand a chance. For a fair fight, you need a r.i.o. and a good one with a decent knowledge of the awg9 and his system, especially the one focused on the clutter. With that, the fight should be really interesting, because in the right hands both the plane are really strong.

How are you supposed to even have a rio when he ejects prematurely every time
@JETZcorp
@JETZcorp 2 жыл бұрын
You can have the best RIO in the world, but if you're notching the missile itself it's just going to slide on by. I've been in a Tomcat against a good Mirage operator. You get close and have him solidly in P-STT (which has no notch) and on the TCS for backup. Shoot the missile and it just goes straight, because the missile itself has a notch. AIM-7 too. First chance you get to take a real shot is a Sidewinder, and if the bandit is really plugged in he's ready on the flares. Next thing you know you've missed with 5 missiles and now you're merged with a Mirage. It's really hard to notch that accurately, but those who can do it are like Teflon; you can't make anything stick to them.

It's very similar. As with everything in the Eagle, you just have to develop a sense of where the Tomcat probably is when you turn back in (RWR obviously helps) and let the awesome radar do the rest. The biggest limitation of the F-15 in the anti-Tomcat game is the lack of AIM-9X. When you get to Sidewinder range the Eagle and Tomcat are on equal terms and a merge is likely unless one guy is a bozo about flares and burners. The 9X doesn't really care about flares so Vipers and Hornets get a huge advantage.

Curious....what if the f14 just spqmmed Phoenix's? Isit the Phoenix that cant read the notch or the tomcats radar?
@smittywjmj
@smittywjmj 3 жыл бұрын
The Phoenix. The Tomcat has to turn away to defend against the AMRAAMs anyway, so its radar wouldn't be able to maintain lock and he has to guide it until the Phoenix goes active on its own. Ripple-firing all the Phoenixes just means they all miss that much faster, and one notch defeats multiple missiles.

In the context of calls to resurrect the F-14 (as example, search The U.S. Navy's Secret Wish: Bring Back the F-14 Tomcat?), as well as an experiment of true platform capabilities, let's try this...equip the F-14 platform with AMRAAMs, helmet mounted bore sight, updated data link and assume the flaps don't jam. After retrofit, my fight would be the SU-35 as a prove-out. Just a thought.
@dacbom
@dacbom 3 жыл бұрын
I know it would be harder without the altitude and speed capabilities of the Viper, but can you please try the same methods with Hornet vs Tomcat? I think the same principles should work, but you may need to delay the first launch from the hornet.
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder 3 жыл бұрын
this will not work with the hornet, the hornet can not get high and fast enough, hornet has to accept that the first launch belongs to the tomcat and for the hornet to come back around and get back on the offensive can be very very difficult. as soon as it comes out of the notch its going to get another aim54 which is going to force it back into the notch and the tomcat theoretically should be able to keep it there long enough to kill it with a fox-2 if needed.

@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder 3 жыл бұрын
So he actually did fire some TWS aim54s but Someone who knows how to fight the tomcat would always ASSUME there is a TWS aim54 coming and defend from there. Also TWS has a tendency to drop locks due to large altitude fluctuations so STT is a little more reliable.

2 questions: 1) why the Tomcat is in slow speed ( straight wings). 2) why didn't he use TWS in first shot ( GS got early warning tone, so PDSTT). Also in Tacview se can see that the Tomcat loose lock due maneuvers, and Ph 2, 3 ( at least) went dumb. So, for me the Turkey driver is not as good as GS.

Bro Great fight. IMO: Longshots wings were not in full sweep and he wasn't over Mach 1. He fired most of Phoenix missiles at Sub-Mach 1. I think it would have made a big difference if he had a higher speed when firing the AIM-54's.

thanks buddy i duno man the aim54 has a lot of thrust and can kind of make up for the low launch speed although yes to be faster would have been faster, at the end of the day regardless of the missiles speed once its notched is notched.
