Yea that’s what I’m learning. I understood it all well before driving a standard, then got in a truck and for some reason it just wasn’t lining up. It still isn’t, but it’s only been like 4 days. Just don’t ram it into the gears. My problem right now is how long it takes to recover gears, as well as it’s not smooth in, like I basically pull it out, and then hold it just on the edge where you feel that slight vibration in the stick and wait for that to slow down and where it wants to drop. Not sure if cause I’m holding it at that point it fight me more or not, but I’m not confident enough to fully commit to pulling or pushing it right in at the proper time. Buddy I’m with tho is super chill about it, and I’ve been driving most the days the last couple days. Hills still screw me big time and I can downshift ok but if something unexpected happened and I needed to drop multiple gears fast, I just hope the brakes would be good enough depending on the situation.

@@LJT9393 best to already be in low gear before the upward hills or downward. Trying to switch gears in that situation can be a problem if you aren’t that experienced and even if you are it isn’t the best strategy

Same thing happened to me haven’t driven a manual since got thrown into a 18speed. Man I’m rusty i was fairly good coming out of school. These automatics jacked me up. Now I’m grinding gears but it made me want to get back in a manual i realize i need it

@@Grtruckingdemolitionllc question, when you downshift; when you gas it a bit to get it out of gear, when in neutral with that same gas did you apply it harder to raise RPM up or did you use 2 different times you throttled? in the video it looks like you gas it enough to pull it out and with the game gas you pressed harder to kick RPM up to get it into gear?

Krooks nKylo with the same throttle you applied to get out of gear just rev it up higher, you can use the throttle 2 times but it’s just easier to do it all at once that way you don’t lower the Rpm’s to much

Hey bro, I started driving a dump. I think it’s an 04 mack 10spd. The rpm is a lot smaller, goes from 0...4...8...12...16...20...24. It’s hard to understand it after watching these videos. Idk if I’m doing to fast or what but I can’t find the opening to the next gear smoothly. Most of the time always grinds... any advice?

Krooks nKylo so it looks like the truck you are driving Has a bigger engine than mine so you have more horsepower now with that being said you should be shifting at higher rpm’s, try shifting at 17,18 rpms

A Ahmad it’s like driving a bike, once you know it you don’t really think about it to much, you just float the gears.

And I always suggestion sitting with truck off and going through the gears and get a really good feel for the placement for each it's all about speed and kicking those rpms up to down shift can always rev it up extra to give yourself an extra 1-2 seconds to make the shift I til you get it down better

leon honestly have confidence I couldn't get the truck in gear going around a turn and I had pulled over and put my 4 ways on (this was on the actual driving test) I stopped and started again and pulled out into traffic, basically did what was the safest thing to do. Maybe I got lucky with the instructor but definitely did what was safest in that moment

oscar de la torre when you are upshifting you don’t press the throttle, until you are on the next gear. When downshifting you do press the throttle to be able to get a lower gear.

oscar de la torre you are either taking to long to shift, or try to rev the truck higher before shifting. Even if you grind give it a bit of acceleration and see at what rpms it goes in. So you can get a idea at the rpms the shifter will go in without grinding

when shift to neutral i do it as i’m still accelerating and then let go of the gas and it goes into gear

You can do both, either works as long the rpms is at the sweet spot

If all else fails mash the throttle and redline it, then go to your next gear and hold against it. The shifter will grind but it will also fall in when the rpm is right. When it does go into gear note the rpm it was at on the tachometer and there is your sweet spot.

Prince Revolver man double clutching just messes me all up, I have never double clutched, you will get it in 1/2 days. Grind it till you find it.

I’ve been having trouble finding/ matching revs when coming from a coast. For ex. coasting in traffic and then traffic speeds up and I’m trying to put it in gear. Had a few times where it just slams into gear. Not a good feeling.

B Kaile always try to have your truck in gear, don’t coast unless you are coming to a quick stop or so, it sucks being in traffic but I recommend to not coast just keep upshifting and downshifting as traffic moves. Once you get used to the truck you will know what gear to go in if your coasting

On my Kenworth I only downshift to 5th gear and just throw it in neutral if I need to go lower then get back on 3rd or 2nd.

Grtruckingdemolition When you downshift from 6th to 5th is it the same like downshifting the other gears even though you’re going from high range to low range? And when you downshift in the lower gears do you still let the rpms drop to 1000 and then rev it to 1400?

Just put it back in 6th gears and if it grinds a bit just rev it a bit. Don’t use the clutch. Even if the rpms are not right you won’t get it in gear

RAFAEL DEL REAL every truck is different, just look at what rpm goes into gear smoothly and use it that way, for me the best spot is 1,400rpm but yours might be less or more

Grtruckingdemolition Yea I Upshift at 1,600 and when I down shift if I rev it back at 1,600 it goes in smooth. But I wasn’t sure if that was to high of a rev. I know a lot of people say they downshift at 1,300-1,400.So i wasn’t sure if I was doing something wrong. I drive a freightliner right now. But Monday I have a test drive with another company on a KW.

I personally like to downshift to 5th gear then throw it in neutral, but if I have enough space to brake and downshift a couple gears. But when I’m to close to the light we’re I don’t have to much time to downshift I will just throw it in neutral and brake. Most people will tell you it’s best to downshift, but either way you have to use the brakes. So if you feel more comfortable putting and neutral and braking do it. No problem at all.

So let’s say I’m driving In a straight line I’m 8th gear slowing down approaching stop sign, can I just put it in neutral? Then when I come to complete stop use my clutch and go into second? My instructor says find the right gear to be in as I approach the stop sign so I can take off from it but it’s confusing as hell

So the easiest way is to catch second gear before coming to a complete stop, so you don’t have to clutch and get in gear again. Normally once your moving very slow the shifter will go into second gear.

Ricky Cooper alright so first thing I would recommend to stop using the clutch, if you are using it and still grinding means you are just wearing out the clutch. I recommend to come out of gear at 10 and as you press the throttle have the shifter grind a bit until it goes in and just see at what rpm it went in at. My dad has a Kenworth to and the rpms are more different from this truck since he has a bigger motor a 12.7 Detroit. Now is RPM gauge does not work so not sure what are the rpms I downshift and upshift. But I go by the sound on his truck lol

Yes so it will be around 300/400 rpms you have to increase to drop a gear

daily reacts & interviews you can skip gears when downshifting but only like from 7th to 5th not sure if you want to over rev the truck and downshift like that. If you need to stock quick just put it in neutral and brake get back on a gear once you have to start speeding up again
