Outstanding video. As an instructor myself I can appreciate your teaching techniques. Your explanations are very easy to understand and love how you show technique and finesse are how to shift, not brute force. Fingertip pressure on the shifter to feel the gears, light throttle and listening to the transmission to find your gear. Good job sir.

For DMV purposes when recovering lost gears do they want you to use the clutch? Or can you just tickle it in with the throttle?

This is absolute Gold. My instructor didn't teach me these techniques and sadly I failed my HR truck test because I lost my gears on a slight downward slope and just couldn't find a gear. I just crunched all over the place till I finally pulled over at a very slow pace, found 3rd and then continued on but by this time the assessor deemed me as incompetent because I wasn't in control of the vehicle. If I had seen this video 1 day before I would have known what to do. Many thanks for an awesome video.

Excellent video, gear recovery should be taught in driving school, I’m not sure if it’s taught where you are, but this is something I had to work out myself after I got my licence. I freaked out when I was a rookie and lost my gears going up a steep hill, fully loaded, I had to come to a complete stop and start over, it’s a crucial skill to know how to recover gears, it’s something I show every beginner now.

ok, but let these kids know, This is Just for recovering. Tickling the gears and also doing this all the time hours on end will wear out the gear sprockets tips and can also cause chipping. Also these kids need to know, that if you change gears going down hill, you wont recover and you can lose control killing everyone thats down hill. and many times going down hill trying to recover forcing the transmission & picking up speed , you will find your transmission all over the road behind you. Never ever Shift while going down hill. - If the speed limit says 30-mph going down hill, I do 15-mph. I always Half the amount posted going downhill while having J-Brake on. Other peoples lives matter first before anything else in the world.

It's a no no if the driver doesn't know what they're doing or doesn't have enough experience. I regularly downshift on long down hill grades. Just have to bring the rpms down lower than normal and grab the next lower gear.

I have gone back to driving a truck after 15 years and was having trouble with down changes mainly. Even did the old panick halfway up a hill and couldn't find a gear so I literally stooped and started again. Well I watched your video last night then went to work today and I only lost gears once all day on a 8 our shift plus I felt less frustrated all day. Thanks for your instruction as it would have to be the best I have watched as most of the others only show how to up shift with only 1 or 2 down changes. your instruction has showed me how to not pannick and just deal with the situation.Thanks keep up the great work and like someone else said maybe you should be an instructor.

This is a great video. I'm in driving school right now and our teacher never explained there's a brake in the clutch when fully depressed. They tell us not to push the clutch all the way in but it's still good to know why. Helps to remember when you're trying to break traditional car clutch drivng habits.
@itts
@itts 6 жыл бұрын
Well, there's a clutch brake, but its not for shifting while driving; it's simply to stop the transmission from spinning so that you can get these shit transmissions into gear when stopped.

very, very helpful video! i'm currently trying to learn on an 8LL (maybe 2hrs in the driver's seat over the past 6 months) but it sounds like i'll get some direct uninterrupted time in the near future to learn. the biggest problem is what happens when you lose a gear and start panicking just like you demonstrated, pushing in the clutch and going crazy with the gear shift.. tickling the gears and slow acceleration until you find the sweet spot works so much better, and as long as I keep my head on straight and remember your gear recovery tips it will make my learning so much easier. I'm glad I came across your video, and thank you very much!

You must have messed up much more than just missing a gear to have failed. As far as I am aware there's a maximum amount of points you can lose from shifting, and it's only half of the points you need to fail.

@@bobnob3496 not true, here in WA state you can miss a gear and recover and still pass. If you have to come to a stop "the driver lost control of the vehicle" which is an " unsafe action" grounds for failure. No disrespect just stating what my instructors told me.

This method is ok but crude. If you memorize the speed for each gear at 1300 rpms. For example in some trucks 5the gear at 1300 is 10mph. If you miss a gear look at your speed, if it is 10 mph line it up for 5th, off clutch rev it to 1300 quick clutch and shift to 5th. If your speed is 35mph line it up for 8th rev to 1300 and clutch it to 8th. If you are between speeds just adjust your rpm up or down. Every truck is different but if you take the time to memorize the gear / speed chart gear recovery is a snap. Also if you are not perfect and grind the transmission it is better to use the clutch, it acts as a shock absorber and keeps you from damaging the transmission and universal joints as much.

uptony1 is correct! I watched this guy and there is not much mentioned about mph for each gear or rpm. As a CDL tester I would mark an applicant/Student off for not using the clutch. Not using the clutch or missing a gear is a shift error on a CDL test. Those points add up and not having control of the truck could be a fail. I hope students are not using this technique as a way to recover the truck on a CDL test. After school/Test and you're working then this can help when you are practicing Floating gears. My CDL testing instructions are at mikelogan99.
