Cats do a lot of adorable things. They come and cuddle next to you on the couch after you’ve come home from a hard day's work and the sound of their purrs is comforting when you’re winding down for the day.
The other adorable thing cats like to do is kneading things. They knead pillows, blankets, and even crunched up paper. They also like kneading parts of our bodies, usually our stomachs, which can be precarious if we’re having a gassy day.
But why do cats perform this soothing gesture? They could be master bakers or pizza makers with the amount of kneading they do. Here’s the real reason why cats knead.

Because he's very loyal and loving. Homie was originally a neighbor's cat but they moved and left Homie behind, so Homie moved in with me. Even when I was hospitalized and had to live with my folks for two months, when I returned home he was still there. I love you little guy, but you have a bottomless pit in your tummy!

Give their claws a trim, or put a thick or fluffy blanket over your lap as you work or are resting when they come over.

One of my cats kneads without his claws which I don’t mind, it’s like small pats. My other one always uses his claws which sucks because he’s the more affectionate of the two. However I have trained him to not knead on my bare skin so that has helped

My cat has been with me for 12 years, and he had never knead in my presents. Not until I was pregnant with my 2nd daughter, and then he would knead the belly all the time, now he is back to never doing it anymore. Btw he really likes my 2nd daughter, my 1st not so much.

How adorable! You're lucky, ours was just the opposite, she'd tear open any present she saw & start kneading the wrapping paper! Sadly, after several Christmas morning disasters, we had to put her down.

I was thinking the same thing. My cat does it in my blanket when I go to sleep and I love it so much. It calms me down and helps me sleep. I can’t conceive the idea of disliking it. Just gotta get a shield

My cat always does it and will not stop unless I gently push it away, even then, it still tries to come back. I love my cat but I feel like I can’t pet them or play with them anymore because all they do is kneading. It’s ok if they want to do it for a few minutes or a couple of times a week but it happens every single day and every single time my cat sees me lying down..any tips? I don’t want my cat to stop kneading I just want to know how to make him do it less often

My deceased cat used to knead. On a pillow, i kept that pillow.. On the chair where he used to be. we thought it was because the person who gave the cat to us gave it to us when he was only 1 month old. I miss him he was so cute..

I personally always thought that cats, when kneading, do it when they have a strong connection with something or someone. For example, my cat Lia only kneads on me or on my grey blanket and always purrs while doing it. So I just thought it meant they have a deep enough connection with their owners to do this with them.

My cat massages my neck every night or when I’m in bed and lay on my right side. Not in the summer tho because I won’t trim his claws. In the late fall and snow cones, he gives me his paws willing for trimming. That night he will purrrrr loudly while giving me a neck massage till he falls asleep with his paws on my neck. Siamese cats are wonderful as I work from home and can give them attention.

I miss pet sitting. I loved it when my clients’ cats would knead and get cuddly. There was one cat I took care of who had unusually sharp claws, I’d have to fold my blanket in half to create multiple layers so I didn’t get poked lol. This was the same cat that after having had a night terror I woke up with his paw in my mouth and him super close to my face looking at me like “you good bro?” 😅.

I always thought the kneading had something to do with preparing the surface on which the king or queen was going to lie, something left over from their past in the wilds. In 9th grade science class, our teacher said dogs usually turn completely around before lying down because in the wild they did it to flatten the tall grass for a bed. Same type of thing, _non?_

my Siberian cat started kneading AS an adult after a traumatic move. She purrs and kneads me when I climb into bed. I give her lots of fleecy blankets so I'm less likely to feel it. I'm definitely on board with the theory that it's for comfort and to remind herself of being with her momma cat because she will do it more when she's stressed.

My cat does this all the time when he’s on my bed, but he also takes a part of the blanket into his mouth and then starts kneading, which is why I think the first guess is why my cat does it :)

It’s for the same reason why they rub against people as a sign of affection. Cats knead because it puts the scent of their paws on their things and people.

My cat does it to make a comfy spot to lay or sleep. If it is a thin blanket on a bed they do it to make it thicker to lay on. O’Malley loves to lay in messy places like my dirty washing or my piled up clean washing that he ruins, pushes it over and lays on it. I hang them up in my wardrobe pick out an outfit and to no suprise…it’s got cat fur on it. The little git. Hope this helps anyone and it is perfectly normal they are just programmed to be worshipped and comfortable animals for sleep

I think the first opinion was probably correct. I've even seen grown cats suck on the blanket in their beds while purring and kneading. I'm sure it's soothing. We always called it making pizza. Biscuits are just as good :)

I think it might be a behavior where they are flating grass in the wild to make a comfortable place to lie down something similar to why dogs go in circles to flaten grass in the wild fo a place to sleep. There you have it. Add it to all the other ideas why cats knead.
