A documentary about the A10 Warthog close air support jet was somehow leaked to the public on social media. The video, “Grunts in the Sky," was withheld from the general public until a Freedom of Information Act request was filed. It features interviews with A-10 pilots, the Air Force personnel who call in air strikes, and the U.S. Army troops they support on the ground.
It is not exactly clear why the video was classified. Pilots and other personnel are referred to only by their call signs or pseudonyms, and the video does not seem to reveal any classified tactics, techniques, or procedures.
“Grunts in the Sky” features interviews with A-10 pilots who explain how they made the decision to fly the A-10, and what it feels like to support troops in contact with the enemy-even hearing the crack of enemy gunshots over the radio while coordinating an air strike. It also interviews Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs), Air Force personnel that embed with ground troops and are trained to work with pilots to place bombs on target. Finally, U.S. Army troops describe what it’s like to work with an A-10 flying overhead.
The video itself features some spectacular footage of A-10 Warthogs doing their thing, including low-level flight and firing the 30-millimeter GAU-8/A nose-mounted gatling gun at targets on the ground.
The documentary takes its name from a JTAC who describes A-10 pilots as a breed apart from other Air Force pilots, having an outlook more like their ground-pounder counterparts, making them “grunts in the sky.”

Great uploads, thank you! I’ve always loved the Concorde. I lived in London for a couple of years in the late ‘70s and would see it all the time, a thrill that never got old. I still remember how devastated I felt when it crashed in Gonesse, not only for the loss of life but also the sight of that beautiful bird trailing that massive fireball behind her. A freak accident that wasn’t even due to mechanical failure but a piece of debris on the runway. So very sad.

I recall being in a state of mind, where I knew I was trapped, and no way to getting out alive. 1/2 mag left in my M4, and was pinned down by enemy fire from 3 positions for about 4 hours, wanting to call home and say goodbye, because I knew I was going to die. Then I hear 2 A-10s flank around from my rear left, its distinct sound was like a beacon from heaven. At that moment I knew I would be okay. Just the sound of the A-10s changed my whole mindset and at that point I knew would be able to see my family again.

One A10 pilot many years ago had an inflight emergency where his hands were burned and he landed that plane safely. If he would have ejected while on final approach, that plane could have crashed in our subdivision. The news media had no coverage of this Hero’s actions. I pray he continued his career. One Hero!

The highlight of my Air Force career was being a machinist/welder on the A-10. I felt like I had lost an old friend when the squadrons were moved to another base and I was left behind on another airframe. I had previously been a bomber and tanker guy and all those aircraft on the alert pads were a "what if" mission. Don't get me wrong, seeing those bombers on alert, loaded and ready to go was very sobering. It was a sudden realization that you were looking at Armageddon. But it was still very abstract. The A-10s made a direct difference that you heard and felt true gratitude for. It made you work a bit harder, stay a bit longer and train a lot better. I truly felt that I was making a difference and it made me step up. I'm glad something that I did gave you the need to "shit your pants". LOL! It was my honor to be part of the big picture that helped get you all back alive. God Bless SSgt Brelsford, USAF. 83-96.

Without you guys , assets come in shot to hell and they get pushed to the side for scrap and spare parts. Skinned knuckles, metal cuts ,sparks down your shirt, welder flash and burned fingers. Thats your blood and sweat that keep the guns flying and those guys in the dirt covered. You may not be under fire, but without you, those multi million dollar pilots are punching walls in ready rooms with no airframe to fly. Those lives saved are put on your + sheet when you meet your maker. Im sure they all have a special place in their hearts for you all. Stand Proud SSgt. This is the best close air support chunk of metal that ever flew. No mention here about it's pully system that also gets pilots home safe when shot and electric avionics fail. A-10 pilots can rely on it's steel cable pully system to stay afloat and has literally saved lives in combat. What a well thought out piece of machinery. This aircraft should never be retired.

I remember reading a book about leadership and its prologue identified a story told through the eyes of A10 pilot Johnny Bravo and this CAS foggy night mission he flew in Afghanistan. The Joes were in a valley taking fire from every direction and all Johnny had to rely on to help him in saving their lives were topographical map surveys from the Soviets in the 1980s. He told his wingman to hang back as from the maps he reckoned he had ten seconds of room to strafe an enemy and pull up, otherwise he'd crash into the side of a mountain. If he didn't time it right, then at least his wingman could still provide the air support those troops in need. But with zero visibility Johnny Bravo did it and managed to save a lot of lives that night. Afterward he said the biggest reward he got was later getting to meet those Joes who had been stuck in that valley. Very emotional experience that demonstrated the skill and commitment those pilots have to their brothers on the ground.

I've been friends with a lot of combat vets from Iraq and Afganistan. I was always State-side [medical]. These battle-hardened warriors would tear up when they heard A-10's were coming for close-in ground support! They knew they would most likely be going home in one piece! It's not a sexy plane, but these things are literally flying TANKS. Almost NOTHING can knock these planes down, they can handle a ridiculous amount of damage and still be mission-capable. Not to mention when the enemy hears that "Brrrrrrrrrrrrt", they run away crying for their mamas. I LOVE the A-10, any time, any place, any weather, and most any mission!!

I met a group of Wild Weasels who came to NAF El Centro back in the mid 90s. We met on the night before the Blues Air Show. Crazy group of A10 and F4 pilots and I, since I was a local, we ended up down in Mexicali. We saw the sun come up as I came back to base to drop them off. They gave me their patch on their shoulders prior to their departure two days later. I still cherish the patches given to me. As a patriot, I had the honor of meeting some of the baddest group of men who I'm sure served later when the Desert Storm began. I have always prayed for them, although we vowed to meet again, it unfortunately didn't happen... I'm sure God Blessed them with good lives after the military service. At least I hope so..... Thank you is not enough for these brave men and women.

I've watched one of these pilots dive his hog straight down onto the target and evaporated it with hardly enough space to safely pull out of such a steep dive. The mountainous terrain restricts or limits how you put certain ordinance on the target. the extra crazy effort this pilot made earned my respect instantly. a handful of on the ground watching in disbelief and saying in unison "holy shite" did you see that! saved our rear ends by a much larger force that we were trading bullets with. Their numbers grew as our ammo ran low in the span of 20 to 30 minutes. We were outnumbered I estimate close to 10 to 1. although we were inflicting heavy losses they had reinforcements arriving nonstop. That fearless crazy pilot leveled them with pi point accuracy...I'm here today because of that pilot. What a day. My MRE tasted better than it ever had that night and my water cold as ice...life was good. Salute

So true, with every major conflict that involved air support, air forces eventually learned to take the most rugged aircraft they had and assigned them to ground attack duty. Eventually the USAF wised up with Vietnam and developed the A-10 with the knowledge from the most legendary ground attack pilot of all time, Hans-Ulrich Rudel. Fly below the radar, take small arms fire, deliver ordinance on target, and carry a big gun for cleaning up armored targets. Even the Soviets learned their lesson and developed the SU-25, which the Ukrainians are handing out hell at grape harvesting level with them now, and the cocky Russians are getting shot down because they are flying too high into radar and AA traps.

My father worked for Fairchild Industries and helped design this plane. There is a sort of strange love affair with it as it is the item that put Fairchild on the map, but also helped destroy it. They built something that lasted. That did its job exceedingly well. It was too good. What a lot of you might not know is that Fairchild also did missile guidance systems for LAMPS which was used in Apache Helicopters. Later when they became Orbital Sciences, they created the first cell phone technology and satellites. They created the first GPS system as well. Why is the A-10 so good? Because they understood the role of the plane. They knew it was essentially an anti-tank plane. They knew that in order to provide ground support it would need to fly low and slow. That is why they came up with the "flying bathtub" cockpit design to help give the pilot some protection. They also knew these planes would get shot at and hit. So they were engineered to fly with one wing and one engine missing. Ask around and you will hear tales of the planes landing themselves and flying themselves after taking heavy damage and with the pilots being unconscious. The not so secret weapon of the plane obviously lies within the 30mm rotary cannon. Fairchild understood the new armor technology of the tanks coming out, so they developed the new type of bullet that used depleted uranium to melt through the armor and then explode. I don't know if they understood at the time the health impact having all those spent radioactive shells would have on the health of soldiers and my Dad still gets a bit emotional when he thinks about it. This plane was designed in the late 60's and built in the 70's. Nothing can beat it at the roles it does to this day. They are merely phasing it out because they can't get any more of them and parts are harder and harder to come by.

The A-10 is the sweetest and most loved support aircraft to all ground personnel , my reason for this statement is simple when your surrounded by the enemy and getting closer to your demise, and that sexy A-10 shows up to take care of business , and business it really does take care of , your heart moves back into your chest away from your throat, all ground troops have a love affair with the amazing A-10 (weather they will admit it or not - being too manly), I thank the A-10 and all of the brave pilots who fly them. I did alot of roofing in Delaware back in the early to mid 80's and saw many A-10 aircraft. They flew only a few feet above tree lines and you could only hear them just before seeing them. So impressive and had several occasions when on the peak of a roof I would rock my arms and the pilot would acknowledge me by rocking his aircraft. That was an awesome, the most awsome treat as a roofer. I can only imagine the relief of seeing an A-10 overhead on the battlefield. I was sitting in the tank commander's hatch sipping my coffee in the treeline on top of a ridge at Ft. Campbell. It was a beautiful morning. Suddenly an A-10 came over the treeline on the next ridge, with me already in his sights. The coffee went flying and I made a feeble attempt with the Ma Deuce, but it was futile because he was already on top of me. He made a second pass and I was pissed off about my coffee, so I was shaking my fist at him. He was so close I could see him laughing. Sure glad they are on our side.

Certain aircraft are capable of state of the art performance no matter when they were designed and built. Their manifestly obvious and self evident usefulness, longevity and economical operation are proven by many types of flying machines. The Concorde, the Space Shuttle and (surprisingly) the F-14 are all gone. The DC-3, the C-130 and the B-52 will remain for a long time. The A-10 ought to remain in service indefinitely and deserves a place among the World's most renowned and respected airplanes.

Only to later fine the last one coming in. A big sigh of relief by everyone on the ground when we would see the last one coming. There were even times when our crew would go to the fight line and help the crew load the A-10. I never thought of the guys on the ground that they were protecting. Pilots didn't call the "Hawg" a grunt, they loved that bird! The A-10 could get them to the action, take a hundred holes in the bird and still get their crew out and back home again! it was a tremendous advantage to be in one during several wars!

Words can't express the appreciation I have for my brothers that drive the beast....an aircraft is only as good as its driver. These guys are the best. Salute!

What a remarkable aircraft. It still baffles me why my government (Australia) didn't buy a couple of hundred of the A10. To all you American warriors, both in the air and on the ground, I salute you and I am happy my country is a close ally of yours.

My little bro captains a KC-135 and refuels a lot of these guys. Brought tears to my eyes knowing the danger ground troops put themselves in to get the job done. Supported by heros with wings helping to pave the way to freedom! 'MERICA!!! 🙌🇺🇸🇺🇸🙌

Desert Storm vet, the Warthog saved our lives countless times in Desert Storm. I was in the 82nd Airborne Infantry when these first came out, and during one night on a mission a couple of these warthogs flew over us and started firing down range, and scared the shit out of us as we did not expect it. It sure makes that distinctive sound that only Infantrymen can distinguish. These pilots are truly our heroes, always there when we needed them the most. The sound of freedom, assuring us that yes, we are coming back home.
Experience the FIREPOWER of the A-10 Warthog!
