Thanks for putting this video together guys it's very helpful. I'm going to purchase a mini soon and have had my mind set on the rosewood option but after watching this video I've changed my mind and have decided on the mahogany one. It has a bit more low-end 'oomph' or bassiness to it which suits my play style more. Thanks for the help!

This is an excellent comparison video.

Something i learnt over the years (and 1000+ live gigs) is that not to go for a brighter guitar because it sounds crisper, clearer and stands out, although there is a place for that in a band maybe. Human nature can be to search for a sweeter dessert, faster car, higher high or a more shocking tv show, your ears and audience may quickly get tired of the bright sound and you may want something with a warmer more mellow timber sound to enjoy for hours without ear fatigue. Just my 1 subjective opinion of course. I'd go the mahogany :)

I've been watching videos of this guitar for hours trying to figure out which model I wanted and your video finally sealed the deal, thank you SOOO much!! I went with the mahogany, by far the best sounding for my taste.

They all sound amazing , some brighter , some warmer but you can’t go wrong with any of them.

This is the perfect way to do a comparison. If someone is watching this, then they have already made their choice for a GS Mini and probably know about the differences of the guitars. While I am sure that you guys are very knowledgeable and could share some good info on the differences by talking, that is something we can learn by photos and reading. What we as a consumer cannot do is exactly what you have done. Play them all side by side and let our ears tell us which one sounds better. And the sound will be interpreted different by different people depending on what you like. Thanks for the video. It was done well.

Bought the Mahogany for the deep rounded sound. Was great at the store but I was really blown away when I got home. Playing in a smaller room really surprised me how much volume you get out of this small guitar.

Great comparison! Btw, I spent an hour comparing the Koa and the Mahogany versions and for me it came down to this: the KOA looks better (imo) and sounds really good. The Mahogany looks alright but sounds really Really good. Slightly warmer and more sustain compared to the KOA. I bought the Mahogany version and so far I am super happy with it. Plan to install an LR Baggs Anthem SL in it as I have read great things about this combo

Rosewood with spruce top...always my favorite tone wood combo

Played the Koa & Mahogany at a local music store. Both sound wonderful. I'm more for sound than looks , however, both models have a nice "look".

I chose the mahogany based on another review and it arrives tomorrow. I was concerned that perhaps I'd made a bad choice, but this video confirmed that the mahogany was best for me. They all sound great tho. Thanks!

Great demo and comparison. I heard a few things that may make me change my mind on which of these great guitars I want. All sound great, just little different.

The GS Mini Standard sounds best to my ears. More volume, projection and clarity.

One of my main guitar on the street in Japan is GS mini koa. GS mini is really easy to carry out and quite big sound. Koa top has each different grain and the appearance is so beautiful. Lots of people say Koa tone is similar to mahogany. But I think koa has lots of presence as well as treble and less mid so that it is bright and crispy, and I love it. I wasn’t looking at the, plugged my earphones and blindly listened and when i like a sound i glance to see what tone wood and 80% of the time is was the standard.

I like both the look and the deeper tone of the mahogany.

It would be interesting to listen to a similar comparison using Nashville tuning. These guitars are perfect for that sort of application.

They all sound great - the Rosewood is great for picking but the Koa is like being immersed in a warm pool of the bluest water on a sunny day. So the decision is - err.. I'll take all of them please.....

Excellent review 👍👍👍👍👍 The spruce top is bright as one would expect. The Koa top has a Ukelaleh sound. The Mahogany has the richest full spectrum sound.

Mahogany for me.. Bought my daughter one as her first guitar and she loves it. She has no interest in an upgrade.. Great first guitar that will be around for a long time I expect.

This was a great review on these guitars. I've been torn between the Koa and Mahogany. If the Mahogany looked like the Koa then it'd be an easy decision. I guess in the end it's what it SOUNDS like that is more important, so I'll probably end up going with the Mahogany.

So many people like the Mahogany =o.o= I feel it’s much to veiled on the higher strings, I love the clarity the Standard and especially the Rosewood bring. Although I can’t argue about the Mahogany low mids and bottom end.

Winner of projection goes to the standard. But I prefer the tone from the mahagony. If I had to rank them, I'd go 1. Mahogany. 2. Standard. 3. Koa. And 4. Rosewood. This was very helpful. Thank you!

I ended up with the Guild Jumbo Junior Mahogany because its the exact same build & the body has a little more depth than the Taylor

The clarity of Koa, the warmth of Mahogany, the brilliance and response is Sitka and depth of rosewood.

Thanks for a good comparison.In a dreadnought, I usually like rosewood back and sides with a spruce top, if it has a rosewood fingerboard.Of it has an ebony fingerboard, I like the back and sides with mahogany, to smooth the brightness of a spruce top, but in these comparisons I thought the mahogany GS sounded better because with the smaller body the upper mids are softened by the mahogany, and the usually harsh barking mids of a small body are compensated by the smoother mahogany wood.

I actually bought the mahogany guitar as only lefthand one in my country so very pleased with it though

Ok so here’s my take on it if it means anything. Mahogany seemed muted to me, damp sound. Rosewood sounded deep and full of resonance while Koa sounded just like the Rosewood but with a more defined attack.

There all great its a matter of personal preference,I like the koa and the rosewood!

Well done! My preference was the Mahogany, then the Rosewood... both a little brighter with more presence than the other two... Koa was nice, but a bit "muted" by comparison, at least to my ear...

Having yet to play any of the Taylor GS Mini guitars, I have to say from this video alone I prefer the sound of the mahogany slightly (and it is a slight difference to my ear, but still there).

Koa has both the brightness and twang of spruce with the resonance of mahogany. Soo good, just bought a used one in mint condition for $649 ;)

Well, maybe the "books" say rosewood has more bottom end, but in this video and to my ears, the mahogany takes the edge on the bass notes. The rosewood does have better clarity and note separation. Koa is just so sweet! I wish I could own one of each!

I’ve been eying the Mahogany version and from this and other demonstrations I think it has the tone I’m looking for over the others.

i just bought the Mahogany, amazing

Decided between the spruce and mahogany, went with the spruce in the end. While I like the mellow sound of the hog the spruce top works better for both recording and in acoustic jams as it's both brighter, louder and is richer in harmonics.

Koa>Mahogany>Rosewood>Standard. First one with the more complex and richest harmonics, last one is still an impressive good sounding guitar. Great comparison. Seeing this 7 years later but, it doesn't matter because it's a good review.

It’s a definite buy. I’m just starting out and it’s mainly rock chords, Stax and a bit of finger picking, if you could only take one would it be spruce or mahogany?

I love my GS mini-e KOA but let’s be honest their isn’t a bad GS mini in the range. If I could afford it I’d have one of each.

Standard sitka top rings hella tremelo on those quarter note chord strums at the end. better sustain there, too.

I have a min Koa with expression system and a min-rosewood-e. They are both great sounding guitars but that mahogany just has so much more depth in the midrange - WOW! Excellent demo - how it should be done 👏

Any difference you think you hear here would be different from what you would hear when comparing them at a shop. I have owned the Koa and the Mahogany top GS Minis, and they are definitely better in real life playing. Spruce top needs a slightly bigger body size to get the warmth (it seems to work on my Martin Dreadnaught Jr., which has a significantly larger body.)
