Great informative video! I'm am also a turbo technician / rebuilder and the only thing i would recommend to consider is when you tighten the whole CHRA assembly, use a t handle driver with the turbine nose mounted on a bench vise or a universal plate that holds the locking side of the turbine while torqeing the comp side. I ran into some issues doing it the standard wrench way particularly on smaller assembly's (gt15, kp35 etc) which may potentially bend the shaft. Keep up the good work!

Hi again, im pressing the exhaust side into the housing. its clicked in and spinning nicely. but it looks like its sticking out too far? I can JUST see the piston ring between the turbine and the heat shield. (the ring is sitting up at about the level of the heat shield) does this need to be pressed in further? The video makes it look like you just pressed it in with your hand? and your turbine looks much closer to the heat shield. Im worried ill crush the piston ring if i press it in further...

I have no idea where else to ask this, so I'll ask it here, but what turbos have an internal ball bearing diameter (so shaft diameter) of 1/2 an inch? I can't seem to find any place which lists this info, so if anyone knows I would be very grateful.

So if I mark the shaft and compressor in the same spot before disassembly, then reassemble it with the complete rebuild kit, will that retain the original balance? I'm considering replacing the steel bb kit in my steamspeed 20g with your ceramic bb kit before selling the turbo.

Just from what I've read, the Garrett turbo's have each part balanced individually, so time them, and put em back in the same spot, should be good, haven't read about other brands though

Hi, i just want to say very helpful video i have a question for you. So i have a evo x with a map ef3 turbo and is blowing smoke and burning oil like crazy i already know it's the seals but my question is can i buy a rebuild kit since it's using the same turbo housing as stock because it's a "stock frame" turbo upgrade tdo5ha and i found the rebuild kit on ebay?

+Turbo Lab America - I'm rebuilding my BB GT2808, stock from my Nissan Silvia. I'm following some of your VERY useful tips. Ive ran into a problem (more than one). the ball bearings that came out of the turbo seem to have worn down quite a bit. The bearings don't sit in the bearing cages. They just fall straight through. This is my first rebuild so i'd like to know if thats normal or not? There was slight shaft play before rebuild and exhaust seal was gone. If they ball bearings are not supposed to fall through the cage where should i start looking for new ones? Ive measured them at about 3.84mm - 3.89mm. I was considering buying new 4mm Steel/ceramic set. what would you advise?

+Jack T sounds like you need a cage and maybe a bearing housing too. I'm just got more ball bearing cages yesterday. If you need a bearing housing, I can point you to in the right direction but I currently don't have the bearing housing for the 2860

I purchased the kit for my GT3528r there is the compressor wheel nut. balancing nut is so difficult

+Omar D the components are supposed to be balanced as an assembly first and marked, the assembled, then you can cartridge balance it, if you don't do it that way you will need to remove a lot of material when balancing the cartridge.

+meangreen254 it's hard to know what it needs until it's taken apart. The cost of the rebuild varies for 225 - 500.

+Jack T one is for the gt35r and the other is for the gt30r and smaller. The shaft bore is 6mm on the 30r and 6.35 on the gt35r.

+jjella77 PTE changed there Ball Bearing cage 3 times over the years. They started off using a gt25r-Gt35r cage, Then they had their own cages that were like a garrett GT37r-GT42r, but it was smaller on the turbine shaft, so that it would fit a journal bearing shaft. Then they used an actual GT37r-gt42r cage that has the stager shaft. I only have the gt25r-gt35r cage and GT37r cage , just like the OEM garrett had.

If i am supposed to press it in further. how do i get the turbine piston ring not to catch on the housing?

+Jack T I finally got it.... bent the piston ring, lucky i had two! it did also damage the piston ring race... i cleaned it up a little. but once i got it together the turbine doesn't spin nicely. I'm hoping that it will just wear in a little? or did i just smoke my turbo?

+Jack T i coated the piston ring in some grease to keep it located concentrically... it did the trick just just fitted it in with my hands and a bit of force.... I kinda really wish I had some forewarning about that piston ring fitment. hopefully its okay.

Did yours end up freeing up after running the turbo? I’ve rebuilt mine and the piston seal is seated nice, but the shaft does not spin free, it spins like a journal bearing without oil.

+jjella77 I hit it out from the bottom. But some people thread in a bolt and use a slide hammer. Some people lay a washer down and tighten a bolt in.

it may have an oil blockage. its really hard to know without taking it apart or at least knowing more, like your oil pressure etc.

my preassure is 3,5-4,0 bars ta 2000rpm and it goes down to 1.5bar at idle my car is an audi s3 20vt. my drain tube is 20mm in the oil pan no blockage.... i have 2 more breather hoses on my block and cam cover but it still spills clean oil from the compressor....can it be a broken o-ring or a broken piston ring on the cold side??? and thank you again man...!!!

The piston ring seal could just be worn out. that is a lot of boost. most people run 2 bar at most.

@@turbolabamerica I wanted to buy a fake gt30 and rebuild it with real internals. Would that be possible? I have a 1.8t I was planning on doing a 550hp build. And I really need reliability but can't afford those top name brands.
