I'm a software tester (though, not of the game variety) and can confirm that debugging tools like this are necessary to test the features of software. Typically when we release software it's important to remove all test code from it, for obvious reasons. Because of the tight timelines, sometimes not all test fixtures get removed. These days - at least where I work - we typically mandate that all tests/test code are stored in a completely different place than the source code so that it isn't accidentally pushed out to the released product. This is an important practice because test code in prod can turn in to security exploits.

Going frame by frame is very important, unity has this too. If there's a flicker bug where say your character does something weird for one frame, you want to see exactly what he does at that moment, makes it easy to deduce where the bug is happening in your code.

The reason for the FPS counter is quite simple - the games physics are tied to the framerate - so a framerate above or below 30 fps would cause glitches and other weird anomalies to happen. They probably used it to check wether or not the frame limiter worked as intended during different situations, and to determine the maximum load of NPCs and other models on the screen at the same time before the frames start dropping, but more importantly to ensure stable FPS on other platforms. This was handled like this in all the 3D GTAs, the most common culprit to show the effects of this being the driving school in SA or trying to get a Dodo to lift off. The practice of interlocking these game logics to the framerate was quite common, as it saved a lot of work, debug and coding, simply because it tied those two things together, therefore removing the need for additional scripts and code.
@minmogrovingstrongandhealthy
@minmogrovingstrongandhealthy Жыл бұрын
Your comment is 3 years old by now and this is all true and even by today people STILL CAN'T grasp the fact that games back then were codded around frame-rates. When I say to people that you CAN'T increase a frame-rate above 30FPS on a old game because it will create issues, break your game, or even make it unplayable, crash etc, people blank out and can't understand still wtf is going on. They are religiously hooked to this new notion how games should be 60 FPS or above even tho most humans cant even see (their brain and eyes can't process) above 40 FPS let alone 60. Or the typical comment ''this old game is broken and crap'' NO the game is not crap, you are just playing it in a way as it's not suppose to be played in. Most PC ports suffer of this, or emulations even. People unlock the FPS above 30 and things go to hell ... then complain like it's the game's fault.
@longlivetheking1065
@longlivetheking1065 Жыл бұрын
@@minmogrovingstrongandhealthy I think it's actually fairly easy to grasp lol. it should be presumed that the frame limiter is there for a reason. you should also assume that older games were not meant to run at crazy high fps. think about the technology and the average pc rig at the time of release. Even games like COD were tied to framerate until 2012 or so.

5:50 The frame-by-frame tool is for when you've got yourself a devkit, and you need to check out which instructions are getting executed. This is 'cause a game runs in a constant loop, with each frame being a new run through. Like a while loop; with your FPS being how many times that while gets run through in a second. So, basically, each new frame is a new loop run which means going frame-by-frame allows them to see if all their logic is working correctly; which would otherwise be impossible if it's going at 30FPS.

The reason why the peds start flying about when you pause is likely because the physics engine is paused as well, and the ped bumped into something, and as a result a force was applied to it, and because the gravity and counter forces are turned off, the ped is essentially in zero gravity and that simple bump from walking into a lightpost results in them flying up up and away.
@WhileTrueCode
@WhileTrueCode 8 ай бұрын
its happening when activating slowmo, not pause. thus imo, its far more likely that a force/velocity calculation is being done using a true "wall clock" delta-time rather than the modified "slowmo" delta-time. if its a 20x slowmo then that could result in 20x velocity calculation. it only LOOKS like "gravity is turned off" because the upward velocity is sooo fast it almost looks normal speed in slowmo

As a developer I can confirm it's hilarious and interesting hearing non developer perspectives on debugging. One note though the flickering stuff that frequently happens with the show collision polys etc is less likely to be 'intentional' and more likely z fighting due to the collision volumes being placed on the same z coordinate and the code that sorts them essentially can't decide which volume should be drawn in front so it's effectively random each step. The reason this only happens on pc or some versions of the app can be due to things as simple as rounding or snapping of the coordinates or some other hardware limitations.

"For some reason the game lies by one unit" - A lot of programming languages start counting at 0, not 1, and is most likely the reason for it being out by one unit.

19:34 I'm not familiar with this development. But as game developer myself, they probably divided due to PS2 performance reasons, it reduces usage of address space and help seeking resources faster, but cost of the drive usage increases. 28:50 This probably is a disk I/O log, to check how the game loads resources, which is 'very' important to minimize the situation that artists may get too creative and made an intensive resources that could potentially slows down or even crash the game.

Actually with that first statement youre spot on according to a couple articles they said that the streaming method they used was a way of working around PS2’s memory.

Hey, can you make some videos for the cut content of GTA 4? A few good examples would be the cut zombie minigame found in the game files by using OpenIV and opening a file located somewhere in the game called "Zombie" and cut death music that would play when Niko dies, one of them is your outro song also.

On the PS2 TOOL photos, the right monitor was *not* a secondary monitor, that was an external PC displaying serial output from the TOOL, and if you look closely, you'll also see that has a prompt, as if it accepts input.
