I flip turn. It was a specific goal of mine and took a clinic about @5years ago. Flip turning allows one to more closely mimic the conditions of the swim in a triathlon. In an event you will NOT have the opportunity to take a deep breath which the open turn incorporates. Best to train in conditions that will best prepare for races, ie sighting. Thanks for your videos. I always strive to improve.

With all the public pools still shut down here, I've been swimming in my parents' backyard pool. It's hard to do a flip turn in 3 feet of water against a curved wall.

I've tried to do flip turns for 19 years, and I just can't do it. Once I got that upside down bit I become completely disorientated, and lose track of where my body is facing. Then, some how I end up in the lane next to me.

I originally discovered GTN when I was looking for instructions on how to do tumble turns. I never did get the hang of it and when I showed up to my first event with it's pool swim they weren't allowed anyway! I now do a kind of upside down tumble turn at the pool - roll onto my back on the approach to the wall, take a good look behind me to see who's doing what in a busy lane then flip onto my front and push off the wall. Having said that, I've not been in a pool since March and don't plan on returning anytime soon - I've found my own little bit of river to play in.

When you do an aquathlon event, they discourage you to do the flip turn (but some still do that provided that there is no one to bump to). But I do flip turns on regular swim days. Loving the video.

I swim in a pool that has a very short shallow end and if I'm not careful I will hit my end on the bottom so I do open turn at that end and flip turns at the deep end. When I the time and space I will actually practice open water turns in the shallow end to practice them and increase my endurance when I can't swim outside.

When asked, I always tell people “if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing correctly” or “completely “. I also explain that one isn’t a real swimmer unless they master the flip turn. Of course we know that is not true, but it can be a standard and a skill to try to strive for. In triathlon, one never knows fully what their experience in open water will be for that events swim. Maybe the water is choppy and/or has huge swells making it difficult to get the rhythmic anticipated air. Practicing flip turns in a controlled environment like a pool can actually be beneficial in allowing oxygen deprivation. Maybe devote a few 200’s to coming into the wall on no air, do your flip turn and then take two strokes off the wall before you get your first bite of air. Give yourself permission to be uncomfortable as you master the flip turn, devote a small set to them and then return to your open turns for your main set. Flip turns are just another skill that will enhance you as an athlete when mastered. As a triathlete, they set you apart in allowing others to try to figure out what your favorite and strongest discipline is because you are strong in all three. 😁

Just learnt the flip turn ... like it. But as you say, it's a serious breathing control exercise, and after 300-400m, i can see i lose some freshness of thoughts, and start gagging at the turns. 😋 I'm doing a home made 70.3 this week-end, with a pool swim ... i can foresee i'll flip turn some and will touch turn the other.

My goal is to become faster in open water. To that end, I would like to do whichever turn will better advance my open water swim (doesn’t much matter which is faster in the pool). The way I have figured it, touch swim better replicate the open water swim: the underwater-dolphin-kick exit isn’t part of open water freestyle, and touch turn allows me to keep the most consistent freestyle swim. Perhaps there are other, more important factors to consider. I would love to see more analysis that breaks down the factors; which kind of turn would best help me advance my open water swim.
@rooherm8529
@rooherm8529 3 жыл бұрын
I would say flip turn because in open water you do not have the extra opportunity to breath which open turns do. The issue is breathing and amount of oxygen. Also, to put it in terms of physics, if you are doing it correctly your momentum continues with the flip turn while with the open turn you briefly stop and then start. This does not mimic open water swimming

love flip turns, but due to car accident, i can’t do one, my one leg has no proprioception (feeling) i could bang, cut, trip on that leg and not feel it. I also cannot bring my legs up to my chest. I work hard on my open turns: I take my turn, line up my legs and once legs are lined push off which takes me way past the flags. I see so many swimmers who do flip turns, but are merely doing a summersault along the wall and end up having to do two strokes before even getting near the flags, so why do they bother?

I'm in the same boat as Mark, it baffles me when people don't do them, mainly because I can't remember a time when I didn't do flip turns (I was probably 7 when I learned how to do one), it's second nature at this point, but definitely interesting to hear the other side and I can't imagine what it would be like to learn how to do one as an adult.

Much harder. I finally got back into the pool last July and it took me over six months to get my flip turns into something resembling competence. My knees still aren't together and they never will be but I have a tight turn and come off the wall upside down. On the other hand, when I'm swimming distance and trying to maintain a one minute lap (25 yd pool) I need to use touch turns for the additional air.

@jeromeibanez2891
@jeromeibanez2891 2 жыл бұрын
Holding your breath will improve lung capacity. You actually notice it even just after a few sessions. Another way to improve it woukd be to do 4 butterfly kicks after your kick off the wall (hold your breath the entire time). When you break out of the surface, do two strokes (you can already start breathing out here) before breathing in. Goodluck and try not to panic so much. When I feel like Im going to lose my breath I always try to tell myself that I will regain the breath after two strokes. It really helps!

If you’re swimming faster than 1:50/100 fair enough but any slower and you have no momentum at the wall. Try doing another example with slower swimmers and there will be no difference at all.
