So what I am able to understand is that the technology for Kaveri was already developed, and now it is a matter of building it with better parts. So is it possible that while this is being done, GTRE can improve the Kaveri engine to an equivalent of GE F414? If all goes well, we could have indigenous engines powering LCA Mk2 and TEDBF

@@AlphaDefenseHindi Yeah right now it is competing with the 404 (not there yet) but I believe we should start working on improving the core tech in parallel. In 5 years if Kaveri is able to replace 404, by that time we will have enough ground work for developing an equivalent of 414.

Its a step in right direction...but in future Tejas Mk1/1As will need higher thrust engines because 5-8 years down the line many newer electronics or upgrades might be added to those aircrafts, which in turn will need higher power than currently used engines, otherwise there might not be enough upgrade potential...after this 80kn design is successfull GTRE must try to upgrade this or try a new core for 90-100kn (with afterburner) engine...apart from Tejas re-engine requirement, this 80kn design might also be used in Marut Mk2 design which was shown earlier by HAL/DRDO

Abhi development bohot tez hone wala hai.....private contractors jo aa gaya hai. Some of Godrej's test unit , after successful dry thrust trials would be equipped with a lighter afterburning section , already in development by GTRE and that would be tested in Bharat itself on Sukhoi test bed . Due to being developed for Ghatak UCAV, the Godrej units are already lighter than the actual Kaveri - fitting it with a state of art afterburner has the possibility of making it even better than the GE F404. Private contractors are very fast in developing trial units, they employ IIT pass outs and highest rank holders in engineering as supervisor - there is no import lobby to hinder them using vampanty unions.

It seems that endurance is something that is never discussed here. Last report of Kaveri also notified problems when it went over Mach 1. I am not an expert on gas turbine design, but, I think the way to develop a predictable and reliable engine would require an agile methodology instead of Waterfall and agile would require frequent testing with predictable outcomes and small steps.

Now Indian Defense Forces and Ministry must understand that no country is gonna give us state of the art technologies for our defense needs. We ourselves have to develop them. So, R&D must not stop due to budget issues. Govt. Must ensure an uninterrupted budget for our hi-tech defense needs. Else, we are never gonna be independent for our defense needs. Also, these technologies have various civil uses and pay back the development cost in multiples.

yeah why shall we stretch it to 85kN? taaki wapis se logg yeh kahe ki "arey yeh toh sirf 80kN ka hai, hume nahi chahiye, issi baat main wapis foreign engine le lete hain" ?? 73kN pe reject hua tha Kaveri, just thoda aur kaam karke aaram se 78kN bhi pahunch jaata na kisi bhi halat main, toh aaj se kumse kum 10 saal pehle takk bann chuka hota first tejas with Kaveri engine lekin kya hua? we all know that... wapis se 85-86kN ki requirement rakh karr agar sirf "80-82kN" receive hota hai, toh wapis se guaranteed chance hai ki issi bahane wapis se foreign maal liye jayenge as per me, iss baari sab sahi se sort out karne ke baad agar 80-82kN receive ho jaata hai, toh be jhijhak use karlena chahiye hume warna again aane waale 5 saal for development and aur 5 saal for integration and certification, will be wasted

I am surprised of this "new" engine (or not!). First of all what the f*ck is a "new" engine (as if there is an "old" engine; & if so when did we build that?). It shows glaringly, the lack of comprehension of "developing" an (any) engine. It even reflects the chap's thinking who wrote this - even his idea of an "engine". First of all (before all others jump on my head), we have "not" (repeat "not") developed an engine, built one based on a design & flown it successfully. Till such time it can't be called an "engine" even. As a student in 1960s, a "computer" was big topic for discussion. Very few have "seen" one . What is a "computer" (in popular imagination & terminology)? Me, along with two of my fellow students had a bet that there is one in "electrical" lab. They went to it & asked the Asst. Professor there, "Sir is it a computer ?" He replied "Yes. it was". His sarcasm was palpable, as he didn't mean a non-functional one (for repair for a long time), computer! An IBM 1620 is a computer then, (prized possession to show off), but compared to a Laptop now it is a bullock-cart. Returning to engine for an aircraft (any aircraft), it is to be first "designed" which is a laborious process, needing pencil & paper (or computer with a good screen) and with the brains of at a dozen engineers, breaking their heads. After the design is complete, they go to the Lab & with the necessary raw stock, to assemble an engine. Before the final assembly of a new design, there could've been a thousand changes! But it may not be that, it can be mounted on an aircraft as power-plant & make the aircraft fly. That stage will come after trials & errors lasting a decade (even in USA, UK or France) or more. We Indians, lacking even the ABC in designing engines, were at it (the task) for half-a century, while the poor nation waits for it to be fitted & flown! This engine on the boards for so long was"CALLED" (everything needs to have a name, no!) by various names - lastly the "GTX", later with further modifications (a hundred must have gone before) was re-christened "Kaveri" after a river near Bengaluru (where the lab, GTRE was located). Let's not call it by any other name & stick to that, till it is fitted on an aircraft (Tejas, now) & flown with success. In aircraft business (building it or its parts). modification is carried out when there is need. Several such "Mods" would be there, as indicated by a (metal) Mod-plate put on the thing, where the Mods undergone are crossed out (X). So have patience!

My question is why can't we develop a twin engined version of the Tejas fighter. We will get 80+80=160 kN thrust. But thrust to wt ratio will go down. Which can be offset by a lighter payload?

Great Technical Info.. Sir.. what is your opinion about making 5% of turn over amount of Defence manufacturer Be made TAX FREE and Mandatory to be spent on R & D.. in return giving them share of IPR... It will give a lot of encouragement like in this case for Godrej..

R&D expenses are deducted from revenues before taxes are calculated, so I'm not sure this would change anything.

Is it the GTRE kaberi engines is Turbo jets engines ? For which the fighter jet this GTRE kaberi 80 kn engines has manufactured ? Will it be capable & sufficient for Tejas Mk-1 or 2. ? Matter is that Turkey has manufactured kaan as 133 X2 = 266 Kn and Chaina have manufactured as 153X2 =306 Kn engines power fighter jets . So to over come for manufacturing fighter jets ,india needs 175 to 180 KN . Indias competitors is Pakistan China & turkey . india have come over them

yes its pretty normal USA main dekho shayad se GE (General Electronics) shayad se khud bhi wahan Washing Machine wagera banati hai lekin ENGINE bhi banati hai yeh sab business hai... TATA ko dekh lo namak se lekar ab aircraft sab bana rahe hain although yes this fact can sound cool to hear for first time ngl Godrej can be India's GE but they will need to do a lot of hardwork

@@lightyagami5483 Godrej so far has only been interested in taking the tech from ISRO and DRDO and manufacturing those products. One positive step we've seen recently is HAL-L&T-Godrej consortium formation that has now won the contract to built and launch all future PSLV rockets. But overall Godrej is lightyears away from the kind of R&D titans like GE do. Not just Godrej, most large Indian industry conglomerates have minimal in-house R&D. They aren't at all ambitious about in-house R&D. Hyper risk averse. Indian startups like Pixxel and QuNu labs are doing an order of magnitude more than them in R&D. And then DRDO, ISRO and BARC are in a league of their own. Nobody else in India comes close to them.

Haan bilkul jab tum engine tech churana aur jet tech ko churaoge toh tum aage hote ho. Plus when you have a government that allocates more funds to the military with no opposition to question this happens.
