I enjoyed your video, thought I'd point out one thing, when you aerate the water you are ADDING oxygen, not removing it, otherwise bait stores would have a LOT of dead minnows.

Gareth, excellent video. 'Smith to 'smith, i appreciate the detail in your instruction. It's just enough for someone to learn but not reveal your guarded trade secrets. The finished product came out very nice. I doing a restore on a Rem 512 for client, which originally had certain parts CC hardened, but as you know over the years of being his childhood gun has taken their toll on those parts. So i wanted to do it right and recolor those parts. There isn't a lot of detailed instructional vids on here so i found yours to be very helpful. I'm now looking forward to giving it a go myself. I'm curious, do you make your own charcoals and if so, do you use any particular type of wood? Bone? Just curious if you've experimented with various hard and soft woods, and different types of animal (or other) bones? I wonder if that would change coloring effects to say, include fish bones, or what have you. Thanks for the vid and keep up the good work!

i`ve watched various videos on you tube on this subject, some like youself are very informative others not so but i see many different qualitys of finish afterwards some methods are crap, the guys seem amateurs but some have good results, some do wonderful prep work and not so good finishers, ive not really seen one that has lit my fire. there is one company that are the dogs bollocks but you will not find out how they do it. this is still head scratching for me yet

the reason turnbull does not show their case hardening process is because they use cyanide

Can you apply this process to a modern shotgun receiver
@gtscustomizing_restorations
@gtscustomizing_restorations 9 ай бұрын
Depends on what the receiver is made from. Specifically, it can not be tool type steel.

Hello! What composition of coal? What temperature? How many time to warm?
@gtscustomizing_restorations
@gtscustomizing_restorations 6 жыл бұрын
My mix ratio is a company secret, that being said it is a mix of bone and hardwood charcoal mix. It is heated at 1400 degrees for approx 1 1/2 hours depending on the steel and receiver or parts being done. I hope this answers your questions,

hello! Thank you for an answer! Am there I with Украини, always wanted to know the recipe of coal %%, what cost of bone coal?
@gtscustomizing_restorations
@gtscustomizing_restorations 6 жыл бұрын
Each job is different to percentage of bone and hardwood charcoal, due to the type of steel and thickness. I have worked a recipe for this. The bone cost me $125.00 U.S dollars for about 40 pounds. Do you do Color Case Hardening yourself? I have a Facebook page gtscustomizing gunsmithing, please feel free to look ,and like the page it has my most recent work. Send me a massage and I can be more specific with mixes.

What equipment do you have or that is available to you. You need an oven capable to exceed temps to 1700 degrees, tongs, crucible to hold parts in, charcoal ( bone, hardwood) a container to hold water with the availability to aerate the water (such as a air compressor).

To add oxygen to the water.

@@gtscustomizing_restorations thanks for the reply, I guess oxygen has an effect on the colour. I wonder what pure oxygen would do then?
