The Guadalcanal American Memorial is located on Skyway Drive high on a ridge over looking the Solomon Islands capitol city of Honiara and several of the islands key battle locations. The Guadalcanal American Memorial dedicated on the 50th Anniversary of the landings on Red Beach on August 7 1992. Every August 7 a dawn ceremony is held to commemorate the first day of the battle for Guadalcanal.
The memorial is located on what is known as Hill 73 the first location west of the Matanikau that US Marines occupied on August 18 1942. The monument honors those fought and those that made the ultimate sacrifice in the longest campaign of the Pacific War from August 7 1942 to February 9 1943.

My Dad, Eugene R. Wise, fought on Guadalcanal. What I wouldn't give to go to "the 'Canal", to dig y had into the soil he had once walked on, to breathe the same air and to see and smell the same jungle he did back in '42. Semper Fi, Dad.

Thanks for watching the video and making a comment. I have talked with many WWII Vets and to walk the ground that they talk about is incredible to me. I hope that you have had the chance to watch some of the other videos in the History Adventures series.

I was honored to give the address from the American delegation there in 2003. My Dad was in M/3/5. John Innes was our guide and just a wonderful man. I do believe the Branic family allowed him to keep the ring.

I was a mere 20 years old when I got a job as a welder with Leonard Concrete Pipe Co. In my first week I met a 50 some odd year old guy named George "Hank" Grunaburg a USMC veteran that fought during that 6 month Guadalcanal Campaign. He was a good natured fellow that would chat with me at lunch and break time and tell me of the heroics of his comrades. As he put it "If you were on Guadalcanal you were a hero for just being there". I'm nearly 70 now with a fading memory so I can't say for sure that he was part of the Hill 84 contingent but I seem to remember him telling me about being surrounded and having to fight their way to the beach. I moved away log ago but have always kept Hank in my thoughts when ever there is talk of the War in the Pacific. My father was on Okinawa in 48 and he rarely spoke about that time. God Bless You Hank

I've been intersted in the Pacific Theater of WWII all my life. Was romantisized by Tales of the South Pacific and knowing a actual Marine corps Captain who flew F4U Corsairs during the war. My first edition first printing of Guadalcanal Diary is one of my most prized possessions along with my complete History of the U.S. Naval Operations in WWII by Samuel Eliot Morison. But this video showed me views of what it all really looked like, albeit in an unexpected setting of urban sprawl, and that is priceless. I am very grateful and a bit envious of you doing this all for us. Thank you so much

Great video Scott. I visited Kennedy Island in 1994 while on a dive trip to Gizo. The whole place is surreal and the sense of history is palpable and this from a New Zealander. 🐟

My Dad fought at Guadalcanal from December-February 1942. He was with the 182nd Infantry Regiment of the Americal Division. I have drawings of his positions and The Marines Positions and the Japanese positions during battles that my Dad drew. His Mortor Team assisted the Marines in key battles around Mt Austen.

Thanks for watching the video and making a comment. Are those drawings posted anywhere on the internet? Did you happened to get his stories written down? My father in law gave me an Japanese NCO sword his uncle picked up while on Guadalcanal, he was with the US Army. If you visit my web page you can send me a private message. www.sfrproductions.com I hope that you have had the chance to watch some of the other videos in the History Adventures series.

@@SFRProductions no they are not. I will take pics of them and attempt to email them or text them to you. They should be shared. I got to looking at Wikipedia and it looks like the 182nd Infantry Regiment landed on November 12th 1942. I learn something every day. He was on Espiritu Santo Island (Vanuatu) before that training and building an airstrip. He told me when ever he and everyone else went out on patrols they always took a Thompson Machine Gun for .45 cal stopping power. The M-1 Garand was to big a bulky in the jungle and the M-1 Carbine had no stopping power. The enemy would keep on charging when hit with Carbine. The .45 ACP would knock the Japs down and keep them down.
