Just over two and a half years after Custer's defeat, the British army lost some 800 men in an even bigger no one survived massacre. Any plans for Isandlwana?

Before I looked into this I always thought Benteen and Reno were just bystanders who could have saved Custer, but in fact the were just as much in the action as he was but had time to create a defensible position, which Custer could not. This video makes it clear what was happening.

They could also hear the screams of the tortured captured soldiers that night. They were tortured and burnt alive in the Scalp Dance. A couple of these victims were from Reno's charge and a couple were from Custer's charge at ford B. there decapitated and scalped heads were later put on pikes. 4 heads were found in the village. yay for history.

Fun fact. Dorman had a 16"x2" strip of "leather" cut from his back and the natives kept it as a war trophy for decades. The only black man to die in the battle was horribly tortured and mutilated. His skin is now in the North Dakota state museum archive

I think the timeline here is bad. If going off of what John Martin said. Custer was attacking in Ford B of medicine tail coulee within 5 minutes of Reno's first skirmish line. That put's him north and on the river way earlier than you have here. It is also thought he took his whole force down there with him. But was repulsed and it all started going to poo-poo for them very shortly after that. Multiple casualties and horses lost there at the first attempted ford. Native accounts corroborate this too. A bucksin wearing officer was shot there too. Recent speculation by Ranger Donahue has that officer as Kough. A few of the wounded were caught hiding at this ford at night and tortured in the camp during the Scalp dance ceremony. They had bloody knifes head on a damned stick- among others. Gaul was happy to see. After his family had been murdered...

Someone said there was a problem for Custar crossing the river - a beaver dam. It wasn't his lucky day for sure.

It seems like the intentions of the cavalry were at odds with winning the battle. It is usual to make the enemy flee but here they were desperate to keep them from dispersing.

Ok the 17 Coastwatchers who you say were British were actually New Zealanders, The Coastwatchers stationed around the Pacific Islands were employees of the New Zealand Post Office, Some of the Coastwatchers got away and were rescued by US Forces, They gave the US command relative information INCLUDING Tide charts, The US command were advised not to go in at low tide due to the nature of the Island but go in at High tide where they would land directly onto the beach, They chose to go in at low tide and the Marines where mown down by the Japanese as they had to wade in quite a way, You can still see the remains of landing craft stuck on the reef, Many US lives would have been saved it the command had used their brains and listened to people who had been stationed there, I did work there for an electrical company and when they came across human remains when they dug trenches for cables they had to GPS log it for authorities to exhume later to find out if they were local, Japanese or US servicemen MIA.

My grandfather was a gunner on a landing craft ship, he once said about the look on some of the kids waiting to load and go to the beachs, he talked a bit about the kamikaze, and how he would need to hold the gun on the plane until it would hit the water, as some tried to trick being out of control and come right in at low altitude. The weather was an enemy as well. 42' to 46' Then came home to working 3 jobs raising a family...in awe of that generation, and its selflessness..Lest we forget 🇺🇸🎗

My dad landed on Tarawa on either the third or fourth day of the battle. The only thing he would tell me that he was a 40 mm Bofors repairman. I know there were probably no US Bofors guns on the beach during the battle to be repaired. We know that all Marines were infantry first then their specialty MOS. That's all he would ever say about Tarawa. Thank you for the excellent video. I have only seen a few photos of the battle. I do have Dad's 2nd Marine Division History Book published right after the war. It is my only source of what Dad didn't tell me. Again, thank you for the video.

My Dad was in the 321st RCT 81st Div The Wildcats that were assigned to the USMC for this operation. Gen Rupertus cost a lot of good Marines their lives and was replaced. 1st Marine Div had been rendered combat ineffective and were suffering from dehydration in the heat when command for the operation was handed to the 81st. Today 7-1-2024 a USMC C-130 landed on the renewed runway there as US prepares for a war in the Pacific again.
