This episode of History Adventures we will visit Henderson Field, Fighter 1 and Fighter 2.
When the Japanese invaded Guadalcanal in early 1942 their objective was to build an airbase that could threaten to cut off Australia from US supplies effectively reducing Australia’s power to threaten Japanese positions in the South Pacific. On August 7 1942 US Marines landed on Guadalcanal to capture and secure the airfield being built by the Japanese. The US Marines would capture the airfield and name it Henderson Field. Other airfields would be built, this included Fighter 1 and Fighter 2. With these operational airfields the Cactus Air Force began operations.
We are going to visit these locations so that you can see what remains from World War II.
