On This episode of History Adventures will be visiting the location of the Goettge Patrol.
In 1942 Goettge was assigned to the 1st Marine Division as their intelligence officer. At roughly 9pm on August 12 1942 the men of the Goettge Patrol loaded and headed to their objective, the Matanikau Village. It was a dark moonless night, the landing craft began to head towards shore on the west side of the mouth of the Matanikau River, the very spot they were told to avoid. Once on shore the Goettge Patrol came under intense Japanese fire. By morning the battle was over, 22 US Marines are still listed as missing in action.

Nice and brief coverage of the Goettge Patrol. My grandfather Platoon Sergeant Frank Few was the last one out.

I want to thank you for contacting me and commenting on the video. It would be great if you could let me know more details if your Grandfather said anything about the patrol. I am going back in 2023 for more filming and to revisit the locations.

@@SFRProductions My pleasure, The History Channel "shootout series" Shootout - Guadalcanal is a fairly accurate re-enactment of the Goettge Patrol. The first 10mins of this episode is where it's all at. Head to Dailymotion and search for "Shootout Guadalcanal", there's also a photo of him towards the end - 10min mark. There's several accounts of this patrol, mostly all are accurate but the Missing Marines "Leaving Mack Behind" is probably the best source when researching. I recall him telling me about the patrol when i was about 8, it was pretty much a recollection of the History Channel doco posted above however i recall him telling me that when he escaped the beach to the waters edge he remembered hearing that "Sharks were a afraid of white" (though apparently not the case!) so he stripped down to his briefs and proceeded to swim back to base, on the way back he said he remembered seeing what he thought were Hammerheads and other species of Shark and that he was tempted to head back to shore but decided it was safer to stay in the water. His dark, slender appearance amongst other things which nearly got him shot when he made it back to land covered by a 2 man USMC sentry, they thought he looked somewhat like a Japanese soldier... I recently found a 16mm film reel titled "Guadalcanal - One Man's Memories" apparently Grandpa did a sit down interview with Channel 9 here in Australia to recount the Goettge Patrol. I hope to convert it to digital one day so that we can hear his voice once more... I've several newspaper clippings he (probably my Grandma) collected on the Goettge Patrol over the years. One specifically mentions him saying every time life got a bit down he'd just poke the bayonet wounds for a gentle reminder that life could be much worse. In 1943 Hollywood released the movie - Guadalcanal Diary (based on Richard Tregaskis book - Guadalcanal Diary) Grandpa was loosely played by Anthony Quinn "Seus" who had similar appearance to Grandpa, however Grandpa was 1/2 Cherokee and certainly didn't speak Hispanic, he was American as they come (born: Oklahoma). Apparently Quinn was cast with a 'heavy accent' because Hollywood was trying to appeal to their growing Hispanic audience at the time. Earl Arndt (Charles "Monk" Arndt's son) recently reached out in the comments section of Dave's Goettge Patrol video here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rZmgqrxnzJ-XpnU.html&ab_channel=Guadalcanal-WalkingaBattlefield Regards Will

Greetings from the US. You and I communicated briefly years ago and you were kind enough to send photos of SGT FEW. My great uncle SGT Robert Stanfill wasn't as fortunate and sadly he was killed and never recovered . I had an opportunity to interview SGT Arndt several times between 2006 up to his passing in 2009.

@@davidwollschlager5845 Hello Dave, Greetings from Australia. That was probably my father with whom you spoke with. Such a terrible shame about SGT Stanfill, he made it through the night but was unfortunately KIA not long before Grandpa got away. My Grandpa spoke very highly of SGT Arndt, if you had any correspondence or material i'd love to see it if possible.

This doom patrol points out a grim fact of war. To win, you have to become as hard and as ruthless as your enemy. The Marines never did anything like this again. Towards the end of the war, they were just as hard and ruthless as the Japanese as described by Eugene Sledge in his book, "With the Old Breed". By the end of the war, they were using shotguns, flamethrowers, napalm, and satchel charges against the Japanese. And they rarely took prisoners (again as described in Eugene Sledge's book).

Outstanding presentation, one small correction though concerning medical personnel, Lt Cmdr Malcolm Pratt was also on the patrol, he was the 5th Marines Surgeon.

Wow! I visited Guadalcanal in 1992 and was wandering around sightseeing right there in the area,i had no idea i was literally standing where that patrol had been...dang it! I wonder why they landed on the western side after they were told not to because of heavy japanese presence..A mistake? It was dark when they headed out,Maybe some sort of navigation hazard blocking the prescribed landing area?

I had read somewhere that the area was later leveled with Bulldozers to make a pad for fuel storage Tanks. There was confusion as to the actual location and if the bodies were actually buried. We know from after action pictures of the dead from the Ichiki Battalion that the tide and liquified sand can quickly swallow bodies. Those of the Goettge Patrol having been cut up and most likely left , were probably eaten by crabs and their bones sinking into the sandy beach that may have eroded over time. Some felt that a common trench grave was dug inland among the trees . Given the treatment of the bodies by the Japanese I think they would more likely leave them. They could also be useful to draw a recovery party into a ambush. Even burial inland would not protect the dead from being dug up by wild animals. About 15-20 years ago a casualty of the fighting in the Horse Shoe and Umbrugal Areas depicted in Jim Jones book The Thin Red Line and dramatized in the Movie of the Same name was partially found. He was a track and field star from Ashland Oregon who was a message runner who went missing . His Body was located and buried by friends in a shallow remote jungle grave. The war went and moved on . The jungle is in constant change like the rest of the world and many years later when a native youth noticed something that lead a recovery team to the site they found very little but enough to make a Identification. One of My Daughters got into Dog psychology and training. All kinds and is Training Her Belgian Malinois to identify scents. She told Me that there are Cadaver dogs that can pick up the scent of bodies that have long ago decomposed. Ground search radar is also used to detect soil densities that reveal old excavations , fills and buried objects etc. the trouble with the area of the Goettge Patrol is its proximity to the sea and salt air. If the area eroded into the sea they are most likely in the coral or nearby seabed sand. I am saddened by their loss and the inability to recover them but that is tempered with the knowledge that they rest as so many of their brave Generation do who were buried at sea in unmarked graves. If jt were possible to retrieve their bones to be brought back Home there will always be something left of them there , if not a bone certainly their flesh and blood their hope’ dreams’ etc. Think about that when You go to Vote. Think of That when You read The Fighting Bunch and the Story of Bill White one of the Marines who Fought on Guadalcanal and Came back to fight corruption and voter fraud in The McMinn County War.
