Thanks Ivan for a very thorough review! I have this watch, and you nailed it pretty much on point. It's amazing for the features you get, and would still be a decent value at twice the price! Considering sapphire is extremely rare on watches less than $200, and that NH36 mvmt has become the "goto" in many micro brands prices at $250+!

They actually do honor thier warranty My first one I bought (have 3 now). The hands fell off after 2 weeks.. It took FOREVER and I do mean forever to speak with a person in China who distributes these. Very hard to speak with.. Anyhow.. I sent the watch in. Paid for shipping.. It took 2 months! To get a return watch.. BUT BUT They included a FREE watch with mine.. It's the cheapest model they make.. But still.. They honored a warranty.. Had to buy another lol

I bought this last year and used this only once on my birthday back in March. It’s really a decent low key watch and somehow an eye candy for women. I’d rarely use this as to I only prefer to use it on a formal attire. Definitely a keeper.

This watch is fantastic, I have the black dial model. Great mechanism, dial, hands are big enough. I like the watch and recommend it, bought on sale from AliExpress for $57.

Back again! Yes I have Guanqin and they are superb, I just swappwed the friction clasp for a push button ( €7 and it is close to perfect. Love your stuff and the belief that not all watches start with R!

I received my black version of the watch yesterday. It is absolutely stunning. The 12 facets on the " mini bazel " accompanied by high quality polish gives it diamond like light reflection with hand movement. The movement runs 10s plus per day which is outstanding. I had option of day in Chinese and English. I decided to keep on Chinese language for fun snd educated my self how to recognize them. I wished the second hand was a bit longer.

Thanks for sharing that! Glad you have had a good experience with the piece... the seconds hand could indeed be longer however being a dress watch it's not too inappropriate (more strict dress pieces won't even have a seconds hand at all).

Haven't heard of Reef Tiger but a quick look at their site makes me feel that something is very wrong... they go on about history dating back over 100 years, but it's almost certainly written by Chinese and with Chinese origin movements... plus the copyright date on their site is 2012!?

Amazing watch for the price. I paid only €47. Crown had to get some movement before moving easily. Movement is doing very well here (-1.4s/day avg. for a long time now). The strap is as far as I know not real leather, at least it feels fake. I immediately changed it to a vintage style leather strap. The crystal is 100% sure sapphire, I tried scratching it with a stainless steel knife and it didn't scratch it. Didn't expect a Chinese watch with these features. I'm definitely amazed.

Thanks for that Jeroen! Haha, wow you were game to try scratching the crystal with a knife, good on you!! The term "genuine leather" actually has very little meaning... as it can actually refer to scraps of leather being spliced together to make a sheet that is then used to make products - this is almost certainly the case with budget products like this one. So it is likely still real leather, just the lowest quality and production style you can get.

Astounding quality and movement for that price! The Chinese can stand on their own design and quality today. Maybe their own movement would be good but with Seiko you are in safe anyway.

Thanks for that - yeah I think at these price ranges their quality stands on its own, but they can't seem to lift it to higher levels yet as far as I have seen. Seagull movements are reputable, but not many other Chinese movements are...

Terrific review! The price is certainly greatly appealing. I also like the workhorse Seiko movement with day complication, display back and sapphire crystal. The deal killer, for me, is the 3 bar WR. While I rarely stand under waterfalls or similar hazards, I simply won't have a watch that can't fall into a pool. A few cents worth of gaskets and "O" rings and then claim 10 bar. Oh well!

Nightraker - thanks for that. I get where you're coming from regard the water resistance, but for what it's worth, I would say this watch can indeed fall into a pool... assuming someone gets it out without too much delay, it should be fine. Charley - Haha, that is interesting strategy, however isn't that like saying I get around not having car insurance by not having accidents? :)

charly has a really good snark there. :) For me, WR is an easy way to cull choices for my own now sufficiently large enough collection. There was a time when I wore a Seiko Pogue for more than a decade as my only watch. Indulging myself, as I have now, to equip an octopus for daily wear over a week and still have a few choices for my only wrist necessitates holding to SOME kind of standards. There is no denying the staggeringly good value for money of this model among many other similarly specc'd Chinese models. Hense, my other limit, not necessary here, of 4 figures as a top price. Purchasers of timepieces much over a grand are buying something other than timekeeping. High value watches for a hundred or three may make Archie Luxury foam at the mouth but really make my day. :)

Thanks for the additional thoughts guys - good thoughts on standards and value there. Haha 31m pool, I love that concept! I would add here that it's dynamic water pressure spikes that's often the killer... hence why it's a no-no to take a 30m watch swimming. I haven't been exposed to the described doctrine myself I have to say... I am confident that watches rated 30m like this will be fine on an accidental drop in. Note "drop" - Absolutely wasn't suggesting that people fall into pools (well they do, but it's not that common)... but I have dropped my phone into a pool before, and have seen others do so, along with jewellery, etc. A watch on a poolside table or ledge would face the same risk.

Yeah it's pretty darn good value for money for sure! The sapphire is not 100% certain but my own tests and that of others suggests it's real.

Can you definitely confirm it's got a sapphire crystal? I've got one and the water drop test says it's not, and the description on the site says hardlex. So either it hasn't or they've changed it recently...

Short of attempting to scratch it with a knife I'm afraid there is no way to be totally sure, and I'm not gonna take a knife to mine! Some listings do state it's sapphire and my water drop suggests that it is... perhaps you didn't do the test correctly??

One thing I hate about it is I think the diameter of the crown is too small, and makes it hard to wind. Could certainly do with a larger crown. A very minor issue, of course.

I paid $54 US dollars for this watch, I believe the watch was a good deal for what you got. The leather band with the butterfly clasp is trash, if you have a large wrist don’t even try to adjust it, just replace it.

Btw, i think it is a synthetic sapphire crystal since a genuine sapphire crystal would be too expensive to be put on a watch at that price. Nevertheless, the hardness and durability of a sythentic is still comparable to a real sapphire crystal. But it is truly remarkable how some chinese mashroom companies like Guanqin can pull this off. Given the spec alone, I wont be shock if they price it more than a 100bucks. Last time during the midyear sale, I saw it drop below 60bucks in aliexpress.

Interesting point... As far as I'm aware pretty much everything uses synthetic rather than natural sapphire... naturally occurring sapphire/corundum being typically gemstones (red corundum being ruby). There may be different grades of synthetic though, and if not thickness is at least partly related to cost. Synthetic is arguably superior in this application as it is in theory slightly harder (being more pure and homogenous) and definitely has better clarity. If you find a watch that claims to use natural sapphire please do let me know! Cheers, Ivan.r

Which one is better? the Guanqin GJ16034 with "saphire" and the doubt about getting Seiko nh36 or myota 8215 movement ? or the Cadisen 1020 with seiko nh36 for sure and a normal mineral glass? im from italy and at the moment i can buy the guanqin fon 46€ and the cadisen for 40€ what would u recomend?

I think in the end it's probably a subjective choice based on style... the Guanqin would be my choice if given purely a comparison of a watch with Miyota and Sapphire vs. a watch with Seiko and Mineral glass. It turns out that aesthetically (and subjectively) I would also go with the Guanqin. Hope that helps! :)

Great vid sir. I know most People say you dont need lume on a dress watch, but i think its still needed. Can i ask if theres Any guanqin model with good lume thats at least lasting enough. Oh and how would you rate the hand's lume on a scale of 1-10 for this watch ?

Thanks for that! Yeah, it's not so much not needed, more like not appropriate... strictly speaking in black tie dress code, a watch should not have lume... a strict dress watch would be black leather strap, and silver or gold finishing, plain light dial, with two hands. A seconds hand is "allowable". Date window is pushing the limit! Now of course, such strictness is very rare, and in fact I have never encountered such a situation, but others might. Otherwise, lume is indeed functionally useful. As for Guanqin with good lume, I'm afraid there may not be such a thing... lume is one area that I find these budget Chinese watches still definitely lag behind. I would say the lume here is 4/10 at best.

Perth WAtch yes, back in the days that was the very etiquette our gen used when going to formal occasions, but now People look at functionality, i often see more People use "dress smartwatch", akward term knowing as long as it has all stainless steel look, its a dress watch, lol. I guess its still a long Way a good lume....

Ugh, I bought one of these (on its way) and love the perlon strap you used so I bought one of those too (beige or khaki color) but bought 20mm, I think. You say 20mm lugs and 41mm case? And GB site says 40mm case and 18mm lugs. Want to get a green strap for it too and guess I have to wait to see if the lugs are 18 or 20...

Thanks. It is 20mm. Unfortunately, they sent me a cosmetically damaged watch and don't want to replace it. Stating that, "this issue will not affect the item function." and "this item can work normally." It has pits in the case that the factory just polished over and then they sent this junk to me. imgur.com/a/CsPvr6E Sad. Shame. Such a great and beautiful watch, but mine isn't beautiful.

Thanks for sharing that - it's a real pity! Can I ask if you paid using PayPal? If you did you should be able to activate buyer protection as this surely is unsatisfactory. If you didn't, I guess I can advise using PayPal whenever possible from now on, as their protection is ironclad and I have never had any problems getting my dues back, even with fraud cases, from more than 10 years experience.

I started a case with PayPal, and a different customer service representative from Gearbest offered me an exchange or refund, so i'll be sending it back for replacement. I have to pay for shipping but it seems they have a return address in California so it won't cost too much to return. Hopefully they will send me one that isn't cosmetically or mechanically damaged. It really is a beautiful watch, with what seems like a great movement but I could not look at those pits/dents every day wearing it.

I heard that these sometimes come with a Miyota 8 series movement but even that should have manual wind option... are you sure it is not hand winding? Firstly I would try to identify the movement, and if it is failing to hand wind then it may be the crown is not engaging properly for that...

They are very close I would say... StarKing with in-house potential is really worth keeping an eye on, but for the time being the Seiko movements seem to be more reliable.

But doesn't that defeat the purpose of having a Chinese watch though? This is like putting a Ferrari Engine in a Mini Cooper just because it has a Ferrari Engine still doesn't make it a Ferrari.

Haha more like putting a Honda engine in a Chang'An vehicle I would say - it may be a selling point. A more "patriotic" brand like Tianjin Seagull may stick to in house Chinese manufacture... but my understanding is that for most companies, bottom line profits matter the most, and the idea of a "Chinese watch" would be of negligible priority.

Why buy a Chinese brand watch with a Seiko movement when you can buy an affordable genuine Seiko that's rich in history and heritage?

Depends on your perspective I think... if you don't really care about heritage and history, then objectively the Chinese watch gives more. I am not aware of any Seiko that has sapphire at

Perth WAtch I'd rather buy a Seiko 5 with hardlex crystal that's worth US$70 than a Chinese brand watch. I'll go for the tried and tested brand. Just saying.

Except for the quality movement, it is a china-cheapo watch and you can tell it from a 2m distance. Just look at the painted date window or the cheap indices or the dial color that looks like a lidl watch. Not to mention the horrible angles around the bezel! Nothing but bad chinese taste. I d better get another seiko 5.

Thank you for sharing your opinion. Well, it definitely is *cheap* at $70, no arguing against that. The date window is printed, I don't see anything here that's "painted". The dial is a sunburst, and the applied indices for all we know are 316L steel... but I guess we can't confirm that - these are features that can be seen at just about any price point. The bezel angles I'm certain are by design, and whether it's "horrible" or not is subjective. What I *can* say is that the quality of this watch measures up to anything else I have seen at the price range, and exceeds most. It's *not* comparable to a $500 Swiss watch by any stretch of the imagination, but for where it's at, it's actually quite good. Cheap does not have to equal bad.

Got this ugly stupid 35mm watch from gearbest. It's not men's watch. It's absolutely ridiculous watch. The 18mm bracelet is very poor. Don't recommend buy this thing. It doesn't worth 10 bucks.
