I have tried kalk reactor and found it requires more maintenance than 2 part dosed through apex regulated by triton. In my experience the kalk becomes spent over time and as it approaches that point the alk swings down. Alk swings correlate with RTN/STN. Not a problem if you refresh kalk regularly but with 2 part, I can just have a ginormous soda ash and CaCl reservoir that does not change its potency over time. I still have the reactor and would love to try it if others have advice about how to maintain the same alk consistency as 2 part with minimal maintenance.

Can you please explain to me how to do this? I’ve been dosing Red Sea alkalinity for months and have seen improvement but I’m looking for a cheaper more effective option. I heard the slurry can destroy a tank, how do you know how much to dose? What is considered a slurry? How much water do you use? Do you dump it in the tank all at once or do you use a dosing pump? I’m lost.

And for pH, home ventilation has been adequate. If you maintain 400 ppm CO2 in the room air, it will powerfully regulate pH. Just purchased whole home ERV to automate 400ppm maintenance. And elimination of organic carbon dosing helps to keep pH higher at least for Ethanol dosing.

I just wanna bust your balls a little bit on ORP (oxidation reduction POTENTIAL) and how you guys stated you dont care about it as it's just the "potential" of of oxidation and you felt you don't really care and shrugged your shoulder about the "potential" part. PH is just the "potential" of hydrogen ;) and its really important as we're finding.. maybe you should do more of an investigations into orp and what it actually means for the reefing hobby.

A calcium reactor controlled by Apex (w/kramoer, carbon doser, and trident) is the best solution I've used, and I've tried them all. Once you have your program in place it self-adjusted based on your alk. I have switches to raise, lower, and level my alk w/versions for day & night. I've been able to keep my tank within .1 swings. Media only needs to get replaced once a year. It's set and forget, if anything goes wrong I get an alarm. For a couple of months a year where I benefit from a PH boost (closed windows), I opt to add a kalk stirrer off a DOS but it's 100% not needed. W/a second chamber and drawing my skimmer air from the outside, I have no issues with ph. 2 Part worked really well for me for years but this setup is like going from hand-dosing bionic to dosing pumps all over again.

I started reefing 5 years ago and I was told that 2 part is kind of dated and I should use reef fusion or something that maintains and also adds essential elements. What are your thought? I live in fl and top of by hand so I heard that if you dont have much evaopration that you proabaly shouldnt use kalk. Is that true? Is reef fusion the only one that maintains alk? seems to work differently! I also need a ph jump! Whats a good choice for me?

Triton is just a specific brand of 2 part.
@BRStv
@BRStv 2 жыл бұрын
Triton generally falls into the "two part" category, although it's really four parts. The big difference between the Triton Core7 and a more traditional two part like BRS calcium and alkalinity is that the Triton Core7 also includes trace elements.

As long as you keep it sealed up to avoid any evaporation and keep it away from direct sunlight, it can be stored nearly indefinitely. 200 days is not a problem.

That's not something we've tried before, but in theory, there isn't anything that stands out as an issue in doing so. A lot of reefers mix different dosing methods together like dosing with a calcium reactor and kalkwasser. As a precaution, we just wouldn't dose them at the same time, which wouldn't be an issue in your scenario.

I think that CO2 is the problem with my tank. My tank is a 75 gal FOLR, and for a while we just had firefish and a clownfish in there, but since I've added 10 clownfish I'm seeing significantly lower pH into the 7.4s and lower, and have been trying to using Seachem Reef Buffer to raise the Alk (around 12 dKH) to temporarily raise pH, but over the next day or so the pH just goes back down and the dKH is too high to add more... I've taken the glass off the top of the tank and raised the windows in the house all day but the pH seems to never want to stay above 7.8. The tank has been cycled for a while, used NH3-H doing 2ppm and did water changes religiously. I definitely think its an aeration problem, but I need to find a way to reduce the CO2, raise pH without spiking Calcium or Alk. If I change to Kalkwasser, would that effectivly take the CO2 out of the water (maintaining pH) and raise the dKH at the same time (which would be like hitting two birds with one stone), BUT will this cause my Calcium to reach a point in which in it precipitates out if I start doing Kalk daily? If thats the case, would doing Mg along side Kalk help with the Calcium buildup while the CO2 and HO- make the carb/bicarb? I would really appreciate some clarification if I need to tweak my logic. Trying to avoid anything that affects salinity as I have finally gotten the hang of keeping salinity stable between top offs and water changes.

current tank stats are as follows: 10/3/2022 1:30 PM CLEAR appearance 77.8°F 1.0230 SG Alk 11.2 dKH pH 7.4-7.8 Ammonia 0.0 ppm Nitrite 0.0 ppm Nitrate 5.0 ppm Ten clownfish One firefish feeding one block of frozen food per day no corals the dKH seems to deplete at about 0.1 or 0.05 dKH per day, meanwhile the pH is in the toilet. pH kinda comes up around 7.8 during the day, but I'm worried about it falling very low at night which I think killed a Royal Gramma, a Snowflake clownfish and a Pigmy Angel. The two other specialty clownfish began showing signs of brook so I dipped them in Ich-X for the formaldehyde for 25 mins, and did a 20 gal water change, and they all seem to be doing fine now, except the pH is still going so low that its making me think its just a ticking time bomb for me to wake up with ten dead clowns.
