To avoid confusion, it should say, "...very much like our own, EXCEPT..." I do not think our Earth is flat. This has been a Public Service Announcement.

One minor quibble: Vetinari is _not_ a villain. He is cunning and ruthless, and always working to make his city better for its residents.

I'll always remember reading Guards! Guards! for the first time in a crowded train riding to work when I suddenly laughed out load untill I remembered where I was seeing everyone staring at me like I lost it. No other author has managed this, not only with this book but almost al books have a moment where I just cant contain it. I read the whole Watch series at least once every two years. I love Carrot, my favorite character. He's the king but found his place in the Watch where he can really help the city. Everyone just wants to obey him without knowing why. And he knows everyone and believes in their goodness. Love anything Discworld.

Vimes, Colon, Nobby, Carrot, Lady Ramkin, The Patrician, The Librarian, The Elucidated Brethren and even freaking Errol the dragon has so much personality jumping of the page. I can't wait to continue Discworld.

My favorite thing Vetinari says is, when he wants someone to leave and he has decided the meeting is over, 'Don't let me detain you.' That simple, unassuming sentence can be read in a few different ways. "You have more important and useful ways to spend your time than bothering me. Don't let me keep you from them." "I have humored you long enough. You have other things to do. Go away now, before you lose the freedom to do so." "I am very busy right now. This is something not worth my time or consideration. Go away before I have you taken away." "I am very cross with you. I want you out of my sight. If you're not gone immediately, you will find your new permanent residence in the dungeon much harder to leave than this office at this moment. And you're lucky you're getting the chance." Vetinari can express all of these things and MORE with just that five word sentence.

This is such an excellent line and an excellent example. I'm going to use this going forward.
@Smallpotato1965

the word 'detain' can mean 'hinder', which makes 'don't let me detain you' into a mild 'don't let me hinder you from leaving this conversation', but 'detain' can also mean 'arrest' or 'imprison', which would make that sentence far more sinister, more like 'don't let your presence be so annoying to me that I have to tell the guards to detain you in our dungeons'.
@GuukanKitsune
@GuukanKitsune Жыл бұрын
@@Smallpotato1965 Exactly. He can use it simply as a goodbye, or a 'go away', or even as a threat. And the one on the recieving end? No idea which way he means it at that moment. But on top of that... it maintains his POWER DYNAMIC as well. Because it makes it clear that they are leaving because he is letting them. He can keep them there as long as he wants.

When Vetinari says "Pray enter", you aren't sure whether he could mean "Prey, enter..." It could go either way, it's entirely down to you ...🙏

Point of order; Death doesn't kill. He merely takes away whatever's left when living things die naturally or are killed by other living things. There's no pleasure or gain for Him in what He does; it's His Duty and He does it with Absolute attention to detail and with the professional pride and care of the true Craftsman. He's fascinated by humanity and puzzled by a species that lives for such a tiny slice of Time, born into a violently hostile environment, and seem to spend all of their brief lifespans trying to make it Worse for themselves. I always thought of Death as a seven foot tall whistful sigh... Good video, interesting overview!👍👍👍

I loved the Discworld series. The subtext is very British, specifically English, and not everyone gets it. (My daughter for one). I’m really pleased it translates and that people are still discovering and enjoying the books today. Love The Watch, but Granny Weatherwax is my absolute favourite character. “There is only black or white - grey is just white that’s got a bit grubby”.

My only complaint re: pratchett books is that they are finite. And there are no more.. It took me a long time to do shepherds.. It was clearly incomplete, but did provide some narrativium... I love guards, but midnight is the ultimate gut puncher... That was the pinnacle for me, followed by night watch.. Thanks for the for your vid.. Much appreciated.

I'm not sure if this is normal but I sometimes just read the scene where Carrot is on his first patrol with Nobby and they pass by the Dwarf bar. Even after all these years (I got the book when it first came out) I cry with laughter. Thank you STP. Good work Allenxandria keep spreading the word my friend.

You sold me on this series on the "why you should read discworld" video. I came back to this video as I just finished Guards! Guards! It was hilarious and I'm really glad that I started it. Yes the main humour of this book rides heavy on the language. I am not a native speaker but I got enough of the reference to have a really good time! Pratchett's writing style reminded me of "Shibram Chokroborti" (শিব্রাম চকরবরতি) one of my favourite Bengali writer. You need to get the language to get the book! Well, I hope you make more review videos on the Discworld books. With more deep dives and maybe more in-details talk on the pop culture references.

In my opinion the best Pratchett joke based on words having 2 meanings is in Maskerade, where Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg read and comment on Nanny's published "recipes book". I won't spoil it here, since I guess you'll be re-reading Maskerade in a while, but I think it's one of the funniest puns I've ever read in my entire life.

"Oook" After seeing your other video about Discworld, I have decided to push Guards! Guards! up the schedule. What a hillarious book! there is not much to add to your review really. I just want to re-iterate what you said in the other video. READ the book, DON'T listen to it. I fear though that not everyone will enjoy it. It has very specific kind of humour, and it heavily relies on language. You really need to have very strong English and the more familiar with England itself the funnier it is. lots of jokes relies on the English slang. (By the way, I am not a native speaker, but I have been living in England for long time, and I read a lot) As for me, I found it very funny. I was either smiling, chuckling, or laughing. I do think though that the golden nuggets of the book are buried under tons of jokes and puns (I think I would have loved the book more if it was a novella). Yes, you laugh a lot, but the side effect is lack of strong emotions. Let me finish though with one rallying cry from the book "The People United can Never be Ignited" hahaha. Next please!

Completely agree that it needs to be read and not listened to and definitely the more British media you've consumed and the more you know about the UK the funnier it will all be.

One of the best wordsmiths there is? Oh, please, lets not mince words... Pratchett is the best wordsmith since Shakespeare. 1 book of Pratchett has more substance than a ten books Fantasy epic and that's not even counting the quality of writing. His only flaw is that he tends to reference real world events too much and that will surely date his books in a 100 years or so. Still, his worse book is better than 99% of the best books in the genre.
@TheLibraryofAllenxandria
@TheLibraryofAllenxandria 3 жыл бұрын
Preach! I love love love Pratchett's mastery of language. And you're right about the real-world events; I had never thought of that before. It'll date some of the books, but not all. Guards! Guards! and Mort will remain timeless!
