This is some footage of the bands of the Guards Division as they march from Wellington Barracks along The Mall to Horse Guards Parade for the Major General's Review on 1 June 2013.
The Major General's Review is the first full rehearsal for Trooping the Colour which, in 2013, will be held on 14 June. The colour being trooped in 2013 is that of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards. There are five bands on parade here, along with the Corps of Drums of the Grenadier Guards and the Welsh Guards.
There are also six Guards with seventy men and three officers in each, except for the Escort for the Colour which has seventy-six men.
The music list for the parade is substantial and comprises forty-seven pieces on the official programme. While this includes fourteen 'regimental' pieces which can be quite short, it does not include the music played between Wellington Barracks and Horse Guards Parade and I estimate this would add another twenty three or so pieces. So we're talking seventy pieces of music in total!
Military band fans who like to see the unusual may perhaps spot the visual sign given by the bass drummer in the Welsh Guards Band to the bass drummer in the Corps of Drums of the Welsh Guards to signal them to stop playing so that the band can play the procession on to Horse Guards Parade [04:35 onwards].
