Guatemala upcycles decommissioned US school buses

Hundreds of decommissioned school buses from the US are driven south to Guatemala every month.
They are repaired, repainted, and made roadworthy to transport millions of people across the country. These upcycled buses haul millions of people to work every day and are re-done in such a way that they are able to carry roughly double a number of people than these buses to children in the US.
Al Jazeera’s David Mercer reports from Antigua, Guatemala.

In American culture...EVERYTHING IS DISPOSABLE, including the citizens...Americans only care about things for a very short time then we throw it out and beg for another...it's a sad existence!!!!

The Philippines has done this as well with US jeeps creating the Jeepney but they have become so old and heavily pollutes the cities they are now being replaced with new electric vehicles.

Pretty sure they were doing this back in the 80's. We called them chicken busses. Back then they were running Cat Motors. Usually a driver and two helpers.

I’ve seen these in Mexico when I was there in 1961 where they converted all school buses in the city buses owned by the drivers it was an interesting site that’s for sure work all painted up dolled up

They probably run them forever and take good care of them when surprised to see buses from the 60s or even the 50s still on the road down there

This buses are reliable, except from the usual maintenance "set of tires, oil and brake jobs" those Navistar Diesel engines made by International are very cheap to maintain and built to last way over a million miles
