One of the details I don't see discussed much is that the distance from a person's face is something we have an instinctive sense for. We know how to see proximity distortion--when people's noses get bigger and ears get smaller, it feels like we're leaning in very close. A 35mm portrait with a face mostly filling the frame feels intimate, and if the subject seems reserved or uncomfortable it immediately feels like you're invading their space. It's easier to make people look cool in 85mm portraits not just because it's easier for subjects to be comfortable, but because, on some level, the viewer will *feel* how distant the photographer is. It's an aspect of your party photography that's always impressed me--not just that you're able to you're able to shoot people looking excited and unselfconscious, but because you're able to get that when you were very clearly within a couple of feet away. Looking at these photos, they feel comfortable and unreserved with a viewer who is up close.

I like 24mm. I admire people who make others look great in photos. Omar makes everyone look like a model.

I have the 40mm and it's a great focal length, imho. I've used it for decades.

For some reason, watching this video, I gravitate to the images taken with a 50mm. Maybe because I did film photography in the 80’s. It just feels right.

For some reason 40mm has become a popular full frame focal length. To me 40mm is neither here nor there. I prefer a 35mm or a 50mm.

I like a 24 and 35, that way I can have a full frame and an aps-c and get 35 and 50 also. Although I have recently been thinking 28 & 55, might be the ideal for this. So you can have 28, 40, 55, 85. This way the 40 is neither here nor there in a positive way. 🤔

I prefer 40 over 35. I feel that way about 35. It’s not wide enough and it’s not tight enough! 45mm is kind of ideal for me, or I’ll travel with a 50mm and a 24mm.

40 mm tends to be the most 'realistic' in terms of how objects are spaced out to the human eye. A 50 mm compresses more than what is expected. Of course you have to consider how wide the shots are too but you can always crop, whereas compression effect is not something you can edit.

40mm on a full frame sensor (which has a diagonal of ~43mm) is the most natural focal length. With a little bit of crop, those 40mm focal length are very near or at the diagonal measure of the sensor. That is what I usually go for in pictures, and for me, every deviation from that needs an aesthetic justification.

The lamp looks like a crown though-and nicely lit. I use a 40mm equivalent to 60mm on my Nikon Zfc-and enjoy the pairing. This video was a fun watch. ❤

I’ve never noticed how you have such a hang up with distortions! I don’t have the Z 35mm, but with in camera corrections on, I’ll bet the distortion is close to zero? Another fun video, thanks. Your family are so attractive 👏👏👏

I just did this test yesterday. Weird! I did it to get rid of my 50mm lol. 35mm can just do more if I’m grabbing one lens to go walk around with and still acceptable for ppl. If I’m doing portraits I can grab my 85. I miss too many shots with a 50mm for a walk around lens. Yes, I prefer the “look” from a 50mm, but getting the shot is more important.

The money bags solution: 35, but have full frame and aps-c. I do this with 24 + 35, but I starting to believe 24 + 55 is the better set up. So I've got either 24/85 or 35/55 going at any one time. 😎

First.. amazing kids.. congrats. Second, I am a APC shooter, and use a sigma art 18-35 most of the time. I do have an 50mm, 85mm and 100mm most of my jobs are at surgery room, and that´s why a use a 18-35. For headshots I use the 85mm. thanks for another great video...

Depends. Indoors it's almost impossible to use 50 as a wide angle. Found myself better with 35 and 85 for wedding. Plus 18mm for ultrawide.

I like the 50 mm the best, is that the 35 mm 1.8 Nikon? Does this specific lens bow?

I own both. If I had to choose 1 then 50mm is the go. It’s the lens with the lest amount of distortion. So if I had to had portraits only with one lens I’m not going to make the person look fatter than what they actually are. Having said that the 35mm is more convenient for indoor group photos with limited room.

I shoot APSC, i bought Sigma 30 ART for my t7i but I wish I had bouught the Canon EF 35 f2 IS you used to shoot some of this photos instead. Autofocus is hit or miss with the sigma, even after playing A LOT with the dock.
