I would also like to hear that. SH has a mediation app called "Waking Up" that has a section where he interviews, umm, Dharma people, let's use that word. So if DI made an appearance on SH material, I bet that would be where, and I would definitely listen.

@danielm.ingram1449

The Vajrayana has many aspects, and those such as Dzogchen and Mahamudra are more accessible. Check out Clarifying the Natural State, by Dakpo Tashi Namgyal, or, on the slightly lighter end, Shift into Freedom, by Lock Kelly. Those are both useful books. If you are looking for some rituals that are less alienating, perhaps check out Ken McLeod's Wake Up to Your Life, such has the section on the Five Dakinis.

As far as I know, the Cheetah House videos he mentions are no longer available. They were on Vimeo for a long time and the person responsible for the associated account set them to private, and they haven't seen the light of day since. I've never actually gotten to see them but I hear they're quite fascinating. Maybe someone will turn up with a bootleg copy one day. :)

What's the difference between a cessation and the 8th jhana (neither perception not non perception)?
@danielm.ingram1449
@danielm.ingram1449 4 жыл бұрын
Differentiating those is tricky, but they can be known by the following: 1) The setup, which, while similar, in that both tend to occur on the high end of Equanimity, is different, in that there is often some other formless stuff before 8th, whereas this is less likely before Fruition, though this is not true in more advanced practitioners who have more formless abilities. 2) The entrance, which to Fruition involves the Three Doors (see www.mctb.org/mctb2/table-of-contents/part-iv-insight/31-the-three-doors/), and to 8th tends to involve this sense of a more analog or smooth shift into what feels like a black hole or void or something incomprehensible. 3) The thing itself: Fruition is like a frame cut, like frames were edited out cleanly with no gap or void or anything in the gap, whereas 8th does have some sense of extremely hard to comprehend but still occurring sense of something that happened, however subtle. 4) The exit: for Fruition this involves a clean sense of mental reset, with a slowly building very nice afterglow that feels refreshing and one finds one's self back at something A&P-like, whereas the exit from 8th has this chilled out sort of spacey, equanimous relaxed feeling after it, like one couldn't be bothered, and is a great setup for Fruition, actually, owing to its non-interfering balance. 5) Aftereffects, which the first time for 8th are unspectacular, and for a first Fruition tend to be impressive, though aren't always. Sorting this out practically is a subtle skill to learn, and plenty, even including many dharma teachers, don't seem to get that good at, so be forgiving if you find this difficult to determine, as it is.

@@danielm.ingram1449 thanks for the reply! It seems you're one of the few people who are talking about these two things, fruition and nirodha as phenomenalogically distinct categories. I will keep this in mind and see if my experience is similar/different.
@danielm.ingram1449
@danielm.ingram1449 4 жыл бұрын
Chloe Parker Nirodha just means “cessation”, and is used various ways. Cessation is a synonym of Fruition in the Abhidhamma literature and this also the sense in which use the term Cessation. However, just to make things confusing, Nirodha is also used as part of the longer term Nirodha Samapatti, meaning the Cessation of Perception and Feeling, which is entirely something else, a rare attainment only available to those with high levels of realization who also have access to the formless realms and who can manage the setup, which is tricky. So, when you hear some say “Nirodha”, you have to ask if they mean Cessation (aka Fruition), or if they mean Nirodha Samapatti, meaning the Cessation of Perception and Feeling. The 8th jhana is distinct from all of these. Each of these three has a distinctive setup, entrance, thing itself, exit, and aftereffects.

@@MichaelTaft108 I never saw King Crimson live, so can't truly compare at that level, but saw Pink Floyd twice and was simply blown away. David Gilmore is one of my all-time favorite guitarists, and I think that the solo in Comfortably Numb is probably one of the most melodic and recognizable of all guitar solos. So, yes, a cliche answer, but still, wow, Floyd.
@TintomaraAriadne

Daniel M. Ingram Pink Floyd are great too! And for a long time that was actually the only music my kid liked, in early school years. I had to translate the entirity of The Wall to Swedish while listening because she was fasinated. And then I had to do it again from the start. When I was the lead singer in a hobby cover rock band, I used to sing Brain damage. I found the genre through Marillion, the old version with Fish as the singer (although I guess that’s more symphony rock). Much later I realized that there’s a whole genre to discover and found stuff like Camel and the Alan Parson’s Project.

Daniel is so confused. I’m new to listening to western lay “Dharma” teachers so maybe that’s why I’m so astonished by the fact that they all seem to mistake methods for the goal of Buddhadhamma. Point 1: Daniel is full of Vissudimagga misinformation, which most Theravada traditions largely ignore. Buddhagosa, who wrote that book, was a brahmin academic who did not understand the Buddha’s teachings. So, Daniel does not represent the Theravada understanding at all. He represents exactly what the Buddha taught against, insatiable hunger for meditation or spirituality-induced experiences. The Buddha’s actual teachings, which are found in the Pali suttas, have very clear and simple criteria: an awakened mind is free of ignorance and craving, which manifests as greed, hatred and delusion. A mind free of craving is completely empty. It has no birth and death but is full of life. The self is the shadow of craving. Life is empty of birth and death. Daniel is full of confusion, among other things. I wish western Buddhists spent more time with dedicated monastics and less time buying endless books that fill the mind with want and confusion.

Ingram’s analysis is not based on whether a particular text has the proper lineage or not and he never appeals to the authority of Buddhaghosa as its own proof (or the Buddha for that matter). I don’t agree with everything Ingram says, but he generally follows a model that emphasizes verification by direct experience (including his own extensive background and training under numerous renowned teachers, including famed eastern teachers on extensive retreat, over decades) + empirical data + logical deduction, which seems to be a much more epistemologically valid way of modeling things than what you’re suggesting which to be blunt is more of the pre-scientific dogmatic “well the buddha said so!” (or more like “well the theravada tradition says the buddha says so!”) also plenty of therevada traditions use the visuddhimagha. A lot of its claims have been verified by numerous practitioners (like their jhanas, PoI, etc), though I do think it needs to be taken with a grain of salt for one’s specific situation
