Guests of the Emperor 1993 Gena Rowlands, Annabeth Gish, Chloe Webb
Originally released on TV in the USA as "Silent Cries". In 1942, the Japanese occupied the island of Singapore. During the take-over, not only military soldiers were taken prisoner, but also civilians. This is the story of a group of women who band together, facing brutal treatment, harsh conditions and ruthless captors in a battle to survive their internment.

Finally, I’ve found it!! Whilst working as the nanny for Cherie Lunghi’s daughter Nathalie, I was lucky enough to join her in New Orleans for the shooting of this film - yeah, it was a tough life! I can spot a very young Nathalie in a few of the scenes playing an extra, what memories from nearly 30 years ago. I’m so glad I’ve finally seen it, thanks to whomever posted it. (Oh and yes, Cherie is as elegant & delightful as people say she is.)

First of all THANK YOU for uploading this film. I have been searching for it forever! I was one of the "hut women" featured in the film. I worked every day of the shoot. I was 23 years old and 93 pounds at the time. They put me in the film as over time I could look like I was emaciated and dying lol!. I was one of the many women featured in the background. First in a blue dress. Then through most of the film I am the tall skinny redhead (my hair looks brown on camera) in the long brown dress with big white buttons down the middle. At first my hair is up with twisted braids on the side. Then they started putting it in a really long braid. At the end of the film i am in the soldiers arms in the cream colored dress. I made it to the end. I looked terrible but it is so nice to see my self nearly 30 years ago! I remember shooting all the grueling Tenko scenes and the guns being pointed at us. Those scenes were hard to shoot. Tamlyn Tomita was also there. I have a picture with her somewhere. Fun fact. Gena was a DOLL! She would take pictures of us and give them to us the next day so we would have momentos from tje shoot. Last February i was at an event in Los Angeles and Annabeth Gish was there. I am a publicist in the entertainment industry. I was bound to run into her at some point. I walked into the bathroom and as soon as she saw me her mouth dropped. She said "Don't I know you?" It did not take her long to remember when I said the movie. She told me i looked the same lol. I was 51! She was so sweet and kind. She looked amazing! She has very fond memories of working on that film too. It was filmed in New Orleans at a converted dump site. The built a whole realistic looking prison camp. Cherie was Roland Joffes wife. Chole was a doll too. Their was a British director. I remember I started getting a Brit accent by the end of the shoot lol. It really was a once in a lifetime experience I never forgot. It is a true story and my heart breaks for what those poor women wen t through all because they did not heed the warning and leave Singapore. Thank you again! It is a quality copy for being such an old film.

This is incredible! It's amazing to hear from someone who was in the film and to hear your experience and on how it was made. Never thought I'd be lucky enough to learn this when I uploaded the movie. :-) I watched this film when it first aired on NBC and think it is an incredible story. I remember Lifetime network would air it every few months or so in the late 90s but has not been played anywhere in some time. I don't think the film was ever released in the US on home video. The copy here, I believe, was from an Australian VHS release of the film.

How amusing we should both comment on our experiences with the making of this film - incidentally, the director was called Anthony Page. (I only remember as it was the same name as an early boyfriend!) As you say, an experience in ‘witnessing’ what those poor women went through by not leaving sooner. I’m gonna dig out the many photos I took on set & bore my teenage daughter whilst watching this again, hopefully with her. X

FINALLY someone has this here. It's first war film I've ever watched at the age of 8. It scared me but it taught me alot too from the women's perspective of what being a prisoner during such an horrific combat would be like. There are some evil scenes but very real

My two step daughters are in the movie. They were part of the children prisoners. The director fell in love with youngest one so much that he didn’t let her die off like a lot of the children did. The Japanese cast were great. During breaks they sat down and talked with both girls and taught them to speak Japanese.
