Orphaned after an accident, Jacey (Penny Bae Bridges) is put under the care of her grandmother, Georgia Porter (Gena Rowlands), a white Southern woman she had never met before. This comes as a shock to Georgia, who didn't know that her son-in-law was an African-American. Georgia and Jacey do their best to overcome the stereotypes they both hold, but things get even more complicated when Jacey's paternal grandfather, Lou Hastings (Louis Gossett Jr.), also claims custody.
Initial release: March 19, 2000

I agree. Love scenes are not necessary when two actors are good at their craft. Besides, it is offensive to me and i'm sure most actors to be forced into nudity. Different pigment shades are what makes each of us unique and beautiful. We all are one race. What a waste of this world and the good we can do when all people unite for the common good instead of hating our neighbor. Just look at all of the devised hate and separation in the media to create chaos. Don't buy into it and turn off the lies on TV. It is being done on purpose to cause civil violence amongst us. When Americans work together, we can do great things. God Bless the United States and the Planet! It is a gift if we learn to be good stewards and protect it for future generations. 🌎⛪🇺🇸 As God says, "Love One Another As I have Loved You."

I had never seen a person other than white and catholic until I was 5 maybe 6 years. I had never heard any comment except we were all equal. I like people I like nothing to do with creed or colour. She longed to have the chance to find her again and love her once more, and life granted it to her through her granddaughter. On the other hand, how wonderful - and hard - to have the chance to show love where only hate has found its way! Beautiful movie.

I have been fortunate enough to see this firsthand. I live in the deep south where sadly some ignorant minds are still in the 1800s. My son has an African American Godfather. We invited him to our son's birthday, and that day ice cold hearts were melted. Once you saw my son loving his Godfather you could not have hate anywhere within you. Children love with purity, and innocence. They are wise enough to know all skin is beautiful not just one hue,or the other.

I remember our church with Reverand Fleming the first lovely black family came down the isle to the front row of our church and stayed for 50 years. When my Dad was dying I went to the church. The wife was still there her son's grown and husband passed away.It was so good to see her and people that were left.Reverand Fleming was passed. Another Reverend. We were a family in the church.I grew up in it. It was right across the street from our house. When Reverand Fleming died the whole town turned out driving cars through town to Green Hills cemetery.Oh did I mention some high minded people left the church because Reverend Fleming wouldn't turn that wonderful family away? Reverand Fleming was like A Man Called Peter lived what he preached. They made a movie after Peter they should have of Reverand Fleming for it was more real.

What a Beautiful Movie--full of so much Unconditional Love, Hope and Healing! It made me laugh, cry, and think deeply. Excellent acting by the lovely and brilliant Gena Rowlands, handsome and gifted Louis Gosset Jr. and the beautiful and talented little girl, Penny Bae Bridges. Also, I loved the soundtrack of beautiful music that was fitting to each scene. Highly recommend this film to everyone!

You're correct. But too big racial taboos centuries-old, faced them to overcome - and the directors understood this - and it would have taken several sequels to even begin to scratch the surface of removing what stood between them - so they didn't even bother. They left us with the thought that at least they ended the movie pointing them in that direction for their granddaughter's sake, not theirs. JADA PINKETT, should a mini-series of this movie - as an anti-racism agent, to continue the campaign, of attacking racism - that still is in each one of us whether we realize it or not.

In UK we had an influx of families from Jamaica, a post war Govt. initiative as there were many vacancies. I was partnered with June James, to help her find her way around the school. She was lovely, friendly, clever and caring. Not my normal experience during my school years. June invited me to her home after school, she had a number of siblings and her mother was still nursing her youngest. June went to wash herself then did a some chores before we could play. I loved every minute, very happy memories. 😌🥰

Lou Gossett is another of my favorites. When he asked: What it's like to be free? in Roots, he had the Emmy in one fell swoop, to say nothing of his Academy Award for An Officer & A Gentleman. Honorable Mention to Penny Fuller who portrayed the sister-in-law, an underrated talent from my home state of North Carolina. 👍💯😊

No+ Yes Marie, Charles you are so on point Ella, was the only friend out of the southern Georgia peach ladies, that realize the child was a gift from God, & she was to be appreciated, regardless of her pigmentation of her skin, another thing I love how the little girl explains to the grandmother that her father was a "pharmacy", not just another black African American man working in a store he was somebody of importance a man of the significant, dam I love it!!! rub it in their faces. Many more people should watch this particular movie that are racists living in a lost world of ignorance. Gwendolyn Pittman- Tharpe,

@Annette B💋 she was literally sheltering her and her boyfriend then a real racist would have pushed her daughter away so the black man would have been targeted better. She was putting her life on the line for him too abs dragged away she was abused by her husband. Women literally had no power then not even if they were white.
