Glad i found your channel, moving to a piece of property later this year with about 6-7 acres of pasture and I'm hoping to get some Dexters on there ASAP. Going to be checking out your videos in the meantime and probably asking a ton of questions. Appreciate you sharing the knowledge you've gained throughout your journey!

Hi Adam! Thanks for watching! Very exciting. I’m here to help with any questions you have. Questions equal video ideas lol. You will quickly learn that there are a bunch of ways to skin this cat and that what works for other May not be the best route for your farm. Get as much info from as many sources as possible and let your judgment take it from there. Thanks for the nice comment and keep me updated on your progress.

Found your channel today; really applicable to where I'm at. I really appreciate your attentiveness to the economics (profitability) to this. I've been passively researching for a couple of years trying to figure out how to make money or even break even on small scale cattle. I'm convinced most small-scale cattle farms are losing money.

Hi. Thank you! You may be right about the losing money thing. This is something that I am very interested in figuring out on a realistic, and transparent level. But In order to figure it out I will have to actually do it for a few to five years. Most people would rather not discuss the fact that they are losing money, but this will be a focus in many video to come. Thanks for watching!

You can buy mineral with fly control in it along with ear tags with fly control that help that way you don’t have to keep spraying them

I plan to try the mineral this year. From what I have hear the tags are very little help. Have you had good luck with them? Thanks for watching!

Chondrodysplasia is a big point in the genetics of the Dexter breed. From what I see you don't have any in your herd. New Dexter owners should be aware of proper breedings if they have dwarfism in their cattle.. I assume that is all on the registration papers if they are positive. I would like to see you make a video about chondrodysplasia in Dexter cattle.

I will be hitting on this in my next video of this series. Keep an eye out! I won’t be able to deep dive on it, but it’s a good idea you’re right..

Great series of videos, thanks very much for posting, very helpful to the beginner. We are getting two dexters later this year and are planning our infrastructure. Cattle handing/working is something that was a question for us and it was helpful to see your calving pen. That is a really nice setup and probably outside our capabilities to acquire at this time. I know so much has to do with the demeanor of the cattle, but what is the least you would recommend doing? Are those DIY head gates with a wooden chute worth building? Or some kind of a way to trap them between two gates? Any advice you could provide would be most helpful. Thanks again for the awesome content!

Hi Ben. Thanks for watching. This is something I struggle with still. Not so much after they are in the calving pen, but getting them to it. Having a corner to lead the cattle to is good. My calving pen being in the barn causes a little bit of a problem because I don’t have the infrastructure to lead them to the barn, but like you I couldn’t really afford it so I am trying to protect it from the weather. So pay close attention to how you will keep control of the cattle leading them to the final working place. If it’s corral panels tied to TPost or some sort of wooden fencing for a alley. It should start at a place that they don’t have a lot of directions to get away. Like a corner of your barn yard or a corner made of fencing. After that the head gate on post is a good option. I have put a link below to a photo of what something like that would look like. Thanks again for watching, and good luck! i.pinimg.com/originals/2a/5e/ba/2a5eba28e6d6faef08842e5585f2985c.jpg

So one strand of the tape keeps your cattle away from certain sections of the big pen?
@dexterranch
@dexterranch 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. But it’s not dependable until they have been trained to it. The adult cattle stay behind the strand 100% of the time where the young ones tend to take their chances a little more often. The adults have an extra understanding that it’s not worth trying to touch the line. I’ve never shocked myself with it knock on wood but I’m sure it doesn’t feel great lol.
