I have heard that starting Zinnia seed inside will make them weaker & more prone to mildew and bugs. Plant Zinnia seed directly in the garden soil and do not fertilize or over water. They are one flower that does not need a drip system. Easy plants. I have been growing them for over 55 years. I sold Zinnia bouquets for 19 years.I live in Northern Illinois and these flowers can really withstand drought conditions and full sun.

I’ve hear that too! I’m going to try direct sowing some this year and see how they compare to the ones started indoors. I don’t know if I could go without drip though bc my containers dry out so fast and I need some way to water while I’m out of town 😆

Thank you for a very informative video. Never thought to eat my zinnias. I have some problems with Japanese beetles in my smaller varieties. Soapy water in a red solo cup in hand i go through the garden (5 raised beds) every morning.

Thank you for this video! I am a new strictly container gardener in Louisiana, and you have helped so much in this new adventure! I absolutely love zinnas. I grew benary's giant and queen limes of different shades this year. I have 2 of the giants in a 10 gallon grow bag and it has produced beautifully. Very large flowers. There is a benary's lime green that I am interested in growing.

That makes me so happy to hear! I’m very interested in the giant lime now so I’m going to have to get some seeds for next year.

I accidentally broke a zinnia that had a beautiful flower on it while weeding. Just to see if it could continue growing long enough for the flower to finish, I put it into the ground and covered it with soil. To my surprise, it produced roots and continued to grow and produce more flowers. So I found out by mistake that zinnia can be grown from a cutting.

Thank you. I’ve gone zinnia crazy this year. Here in SoCal 9b, I find the Oklahoma variety does really well. Trying to keep mini green grasshoppers from eating the leaves. I only fertilize with fish emulsion.

👏 I think in warm climates zinnias are easiest flower to grow from seed and it's not even close. Plus pollinators love them, including monarch butterflies. I grew parks lilac this year. It starts out pink then fades to purple. The blooms were huge! Have you seen florets precious metal zinnias? I've waited to buy those for YEARS now. Profusion zinnias are incredible for tiny spaces too.

If the zinnias are edible, I have to ask the question, are they medicinal? Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge, I have several packets of zinnia seeds in all different colors as well as many other flowers too but have not planted any as of yet. I am always afraid of growing flowers amongst my vegetables for some reason, or maybe it is just a fear of failure. I forced myself to buy some echinacea starts from my local farmers market last year and they of course were very small all last season and produced no flowers. This year they have really taken off and are taller than I am (5' 1"), but the amount of flowers is just gorgeous and I love them. I am currently drying my first batch of leaves and flowers ( after I enjoyed them in a vase for a few days of course ) so that I can make a tincture from them. I am really getting into the world of herbalism and enjoying it, and I cannot wait to add more flowers to my gardens in the coming years. Again, thank you so much for teaching me about the zinnia. May God always Bless you

I’m just getting into edible flowers so don’t know a ton yet! From what I’ve read there isn’t a lot of it for medicinal purposes but it’s also likely I haven’t come across that info yet.

I’ll also get zinnias that look different from the same plant! Some have the fluffy center, some have just a rim of petals. This variety definitely has more variation of the flowers than any other zinnias I’ve grown.

Just found your channel and my growing zone is the same as yours (I’m in the suburbs) I’m thinking about growing zinnias beca use I have a black thumb and I want flowers this year. I already have a dirt bed formed in front on my house by my foundation on each side of my front door - would zinnias grow nicely in these spaces? They get full afternoon Sun. Morning? Not so much.
