I'm growing some in a pot and I've been worried that maybe they're too close to each other and everywhere recommends thinning them, but seeing that yours thrived just like that in close proximity make me feel a little better.
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 3 жыл бұрын
The key is to sow seeds very thinly and not over crowding. Let them grow to about 2-3 inches, then it would be easy to see if thinning is needed. Thank you for the comment and good luck!

Just curious as to why you didn’t thin the seedlings
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 3 жыл бұрын
@@sherryhudson9075 I did not thin them mainly because wildflowers such as zinnias usually will sort themselves out and do not need to be thinned, same as when they grow in meadows. Also, the instruction on seed packet did not recommend to do so. Of course You can thin and give them more room to grow if you want. Thanks for getting in touch!

Is it necersary that I put water every day? Do it needs much sun?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Always water as needed. For seedlings and when germinating, I water daily. But when they grow I check the soil and if the top feels dry I water them. Zinnias do well in full sun, 6-8 a day. But I had few that did pretty good in a part sun location under a tree shade. However they might not produce many flowers. Thank you for the question and good luck!

Great video. Last year I grew them same way as shown here but once the flowers came my plants became sick , dull and had white patches . Can u plz suggest anything to correct the issue this year.
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 3 жыл бұрын
The white patches are most likely powdery mildew, one of zinnias common fungal disease. The best remedy is to prevent. Try to water your zinnias only around the base and not the foliage nor leaves. Make sure to plant them in a sunny location and if needed, you can thin them to have an airflow around plants. Spraying fungicides on leaves is another option; make your own by mixing 3 Tbsp. of horticultural oil and 1 1/2 Tbsp. baking soda in a gallon of water. Thank you for the comment and good luck!

Sure you can. The pot I used was about 8" deep, almost as deep as window boxes. Make sure to chose dwarf or container variety, and sow seeds thinly. Also water frequently since boxes are small and soil cannot take too much water. Thank you very much for visiting and Happy Gardening!

@ 6:05, So beautiful!!!!! Looks like all the seedling settled. 1. Do you still need to repot them because so many plants? 2. Will these plants survive and bloom together? 3. How big these plants will grow? 4. How many can I plant in 1.6' long tub? Sorry to ask too many questions!!!!!!!!!!!
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, 1. No, I didn't repot them. I direct-sowed them and let them grow. 2. As you can see in video they did pretty good. I should say that although most seedlings survived, some didn't bloom to their best. This is how wildflower such as zinnias do in nature and sort themselves out. 3. On seed packet says this variety grows to 6 in. height. As I removed spent flowers, some grew to about 12 in. 4. If you choose container or dwarf varieties such as the one in video (Thumbelina), or dwarf Lilliput, you can sow every 2-3 inches. Do not worry too much about spacing because you can easily thin them if needed. Not a problem at all. Pleasure to be of any help. My answers are based on my experience and might not be fit-for-all. Just give it a go and sometimes you will be surprised how well plants can do in unusual conditions. Best of luck to you!

Hello, what product did you use so that fungi such as whitefly oidium among others do not stick to it ... I would appreciate it very much.
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I always try to prevent fungi rather than treat it. If I need to use a fungicide, I usually use copper fungicide, or neem oil (horticultural oil). I rotate these two products weekly to minimize the chance of fungi resistance. Spray it on new and green leaves to prevent the spread of the disease since the fungicide will not cure infected leaves. Prune diseased stems and leaves and destroy them. Also, always water at the root and avoid overhead watering. I hope this helps. Good luck!

@TowardGarden

Hi, You may put your tray by the window but as soon as they germinate, move them somewhere that gets 4-5 hours of sun until you transplant them. Shady places or indoor lights will make seedlings leggy. Thank you for visiting and good luck!

I usually start zinnias in March. I have noticed that it is not the temperature but the rain and moisture in Jan/Feb that cause damage to the seedlings most. Hi. I just planted some Cali giants and Lilliput from seeds in a raised garden bed today. How often should i water? I've seen videos that say to just keep the soil moist then others say 5xs a week. What would you suggest (Im in Georgia)?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Since zinnia seeds are planted not deep (about 1/4") you just need to keep top soil moist. This means just to shower top soil and not deep watering. Keeping moist and watering 5x a week is kind of same for warmer areas. In Georgia, I am assuming the weather is on the hot side, so check soil everyday, if top of soil is dry just water to keep it moist until seeds sprout. The main goal is to not let soil dry completely. I hope this helps. Wishing you beautiful blooms and thank you for visiting!

Watering depends on the weather you are growing plants. If hot, water daily. You want to keep moist moist and avoid letting it dry out. If top soil is wet, skip watering. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

Mine seem to have stalled in the growing process once they started getting a second set of leaves. Any ideas what I should do?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't had that issue with my zinnia but on others like sunflower few issues come to my mind. First, it might be the light. Zinnias grow well in full sun and lack of sunlight might slow the growing. Second, it might be a pest of fungal issue effecting young seedlings, which you need to spray neem oil mix on both side of the young leaves. And lastly, it might be the soil. If it lacks nutrients, apply liquid fertilizer at a half or 1/3 rate. I hope this helps and thank you for visiting.

Hi! My nephew brought one of these home and asked me to help him plant it. We repotted the tiny sprout into a small pot and since these plants need lots of sun I put it outside. However the wind was so strong now the plant looks wilted. I brought it inside and put it in the window where it can still get a lot of sun. The soil is wet/moist but the plant looks pathetic now. I am thinking maybe I didn’t pack the soil in hard enough for the sprout to stand firm?? I do not have a green thumb at all but really don’t want to kill my nephews plant! He’s so excited! Please help me.

Hi! I am guessing you repotted too early with not enough roots developed, and also they were exposed to too much sun. For now looks like you are on the right track. Keep them sheltered (maybe part shade) and moist. I suggest, while waiting for these to recover, sow another batch of seeds for backup. I hope this helps and you can manage to grow beautiful zinnias for your nephew. Thank you for visiting!

All the leafs when plant was small was chewed up. What gives?

Probably common pests like Aphids and caterpillars eat your Zinnia leaves. You can spray natural solutions like soap-water mixture, Neem oil to control infestation. Thanks for visiting!

What kind of potting soil do you use?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
I make my own potting soil using compost and garden soil (with added some perlite or garden grit), but you can use any potting soil. Zinnia usually doesn't need a very fertile soil to grow. Thank you for visiting.

How often do you water the seeds?

You want to keep soil constantly moist for seeds. I usually water them daily. Thanks for visiting!

Maine seed grow kiya germinate hua but 2/3 days me sare dead ho gaye.kya reason hoga? Please reply
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 3 ай бұрын
If I read your comment correctly, the reason you seedling die after germination is most probably due to a fungal disease called "damping off". It comes from the soil and when the soil is too damp. If you did direct sow it in the garden, then try to first grow them in a seed tray that only has sterile soil such as coco coir- do not use soil from the garden. Once the seedlings are 6-7 cm, then transplant them in garden soil. Mature seedlings will handle the disease much better. Hope this helps and good luck!

Zinnia is not a heavy feeder plant and will do fine with a light fertilizing. Every 4-5 weeks should be ok. Thanks for visiting.

Why do you have the black plastic on the back?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
Part of my fence pickets are underground and the black plastic is just to protect the pickets. It has nothing to do with gardening and planting zinnias. Thank you for visiting.

@Toward Garden thank you for your reply . My daughter's are growing their zinnias but they placed the seeds in very small containers ..should we be able to put transport them to bigger pots without damaging them ? They are about 5 days old
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
@@MsSweetlove90 You sure can. You can wait maybe few more days and then using a fork, gently seperate seedligs and plant them far apart. (you can check my other videos when I prick out seedlings) Make sure not to damage roots and to keep them watered after seperating. Happy gardening.
