People calling this typical horror movie stupidity are missing the entire narrative thread. When Eddie initially tries to tell Nick that something is happening with that particular unit, he asks, "Aren't you curious?" "No. Maybe that's why I'm still alive." But he is killed because *he simply does not care to look further.* Past oddities, past people, as soon as he encounters something he doesn't like, he actively defies it. Nick crossed county lines when he was told not to. Nick disregarded Eddie's insight into the unit when he was asked to look closer. Nick disrespected Amelia he was pleaded with, quite nicely, to be allowed to see what remnants of her family she could salvage. Nick dismisses Roland's spiritual insight as creepy hooey that he should "shut the fck up" about right up until tangible consequences finally, FINALLY appeared. And by then, of course, it was too late. Supernatural elements aside, this is exactly how people wind up dead in the real world.

I hated the first part of the scene. I know the characters of a paranormal horror movie have to be stupid to some degree, but this was too much. I can understand that as a soldier he wouldn't be fazed by a corpse like anyone else would in this situation, but there's tentacles writhing in the face cavity..... Then there's how much space there is between the sand and the book... I just wish he had tripped or got blown back by a magical force or something, and that's what would break the circle. Maybe I'm missing something?

This wasn't just a matter of him being stupid, this was a matter of him actively disrespecting and disregarding the words of everyone around him. Multiple times he would tell the man trying to warn him of all the dangers ahead to "shut up" and "I don't care for X". Imagine if he didn't break the seal? He would have to actively heed the words of the man after brushing him off for the better part of an entire evening. Plus it would only be an "intelligent" move if you were actively superstitious, which he very obviously isn't. It could very well be that, not being spiritually attuned, he could not actually see the demon because he himself never remarks on it. It's not stupidity, it's flagrant disrespect for both the people and forces around him which gets him killed.

I honestly don't get why people like this godawful ending. Its like the most uninspired, cheapest type of demagoguery with a completely unearned moralist "lesson". Aside from being generally unpleasant, Nick did absolutely nothing to warrant this fate. And the fact he suddenly acts like a literal demonic presence is no biggie and they make the sweet old lady into a mustache twirling villain is so absurdly cheesy it actually feels like they insult our intelligence.
@ce66544 ай бұрын
I honestly felt like the moral lesson was, "This is what happens when you're a right-wing extremist." It really is uninspired and weak. Guillermo Del Torro absolutely believes this, too, if you see his social media history, and he wrote this short story. He believes that Nick earned his fate by being a right-wing guy and unpleasant, and the Hispanic lady was justified in killing him because he was a big meanie who didn't like illegal immigrants and hurt her feels. That's basically it. The caricature of a Fox News viewer dies, and he deserves it because he's a mean, racist jerk, and he's stupid, too.
