I'm glad this hate crime trial was brought forth. It sends a message that POC are fully autonomous people deserving of respect, autonomy, and all the rights that everyone else has. I've been going back & forth on the topic as to whether or not these trials were using up valuable money & time. I've come to the conclusion that it is absolutely necessary. It's necessary to have hate crime laws and hate crime penalties and hate crime trials. If anything, these laws and trials will show people that we care about everyone, and everyone's deserving of full rights. These trials show we care about people who are being harassed and marginalized and, sadly, sometimes murdered over silly things such as the way they look or how they worship god(s). So that's my current stance. Hopefully someday I won't need to have this stance. But for now, we need these trials and these laws to let everyone know (both vic & perps) that everyone is important in the same respects as everyone else. And hopefully that will prevent crimes of bigotry from happening again.
